The most comprehensive and user-friendly photographic field guide to the world's wild cats and hyenas
From the Leopard Cat of Asia, the Black-footed Cat of Africa, and the Amur Tiger of Siberia to South America's Ocelots and North America's Bobcats, the wild cats known as felids are among the most fascinating and spectacular of all animals. Felids and Hyenas of the World is a great reference book for anybody interested in feliforms. This gem of a book covers everything from the bobcat to the aardwolf (not a wolf). There are beautiful photos on almost every colour-coded page and the information given about each animal is accurate and concise.
Each animal is broken down into: Other Names Taxonomy Reproduction Behaviour Distribution Habitat Conservation Status
The layout makes it excellent to view at a glance, which is especially handy for if you're planning on taking this book with you to any facility. Another thing that I really like about this book is that the animals are displayed in similar poses so you can compare them easily. Never again will you be confused as to the difference between a cheetah, leopard and jaguar!
The book also covers melanistic variants of the animals as well as unique markings and patterns (such as in the case of the king cheetah).
A truly fantastic book for anybody who loves these animals. I'll definitely be picking up the guides to canids and bovids, too.
If anybody is confused about hyenas being a part of it, they're feliforms so their inclusion isn't erroneous.
Another reference book on this ever popular family of carnivores. Castello turns to cats and hyenas after publishing the first two similar format volumes on bovids and canids. As usual the book introduces the anatomy, biology, evolutionary history, taxonomy and ecology of the animals in brief write ups, followed by the meat of the book with fairly detailed two page spreads covering every single subspecies of each species of cat and hyena.
Useful for the specialist to update with the latest knowledge and data on these spectacular and charismatic animals, but could be overkill for the less serious nature lover. Would have earned five stars from me if not for the typos I came across from just a quick casual read, and the use of some flabby zoo animals in the photos.
