Godzilla and Kong interacting are foregrounded in the illustrations, with the things the text tells you to count being way smaller and peripheral to the main action, which felt like a poor design choice to me -- but my partner noted it's a sort of "I Spy" conceit.
The statements on each page of attributes of a good friend are solid, though they don't always seem clearly linked to the illustration -- for example, "A good friend is someone you can count on," paired with an illustration of Kong with his hands over his eyes and a forest behind him, which I eventually realized was him counting while playing hide-and-seek with Godzilla (I guess we were going for the counting pun?).
The illustrations are cute versions of Godzilla and Kong, and it's sweet to see them playing together as friends.
This was a very adorable book. We got it for our son, who is 4, and even though he is excellent with counting, he is a MASSIVE Godzilla/Kong/Monsterverse fan. We have no Kong or Godzilla books for him at the moment so I knew this one was a must buy. The illustrations are great (and if you've seen Godzilla vs Kong you'll love the unexpected third friend that pops up) and each message is very cute and simple. It really reinforces positivity, friendship and helping each other out. We loved this one and have read it about 6 times already!
I didn't really care for the muted-color, video cartoon-ish illustrations, and I was surprised by the choice to direct attention to uninteresting background objects for counting. Meanwhile, there's a lot of friendship stuff playing out with Godzilla and Kong in the foreground, none of the text alluding to the unnecessary and, in this case irrelevant, subtitle "Sometimes Friends Fight (But they always make up)."
One of my little storytime kids is obsessed with cryptids and kaiju, much like myself, and she got me a Bigfoot bracelet and this book as a present. Today I got to fulfill my dream of doing a Kaiju/Cryptid themed storytime. She was very pleased.
I didn't like this one as much as Kong and Me, but it's still charming, and little kids will enjoy the counting mechanic. The art is also super cute. There were some bits I thought were a little inconsistent, but overall fun stuff.
Edit: I read it again because I was thinking to write a longer review for a publication.
