A lull in the onslaught of infected breeds a false sense of security for Johnson and his expanded group. Once again, events unfolding far beyond their knowledge conspire to bring a new type of terror to the survivors.
Others, displaced from what had been their place of safety, struggle to survive against age-old enemies: cold and hunger. In a bold move, they break out, only to make unexpected discoveries which could spell a chance for them to survive.
In a bid to undo all progress, the untested serum is deployed on a massive scale which tips the scales steeply against humanity’s chances to win. To live. To remain the dominant species on Earth.
Fleeing the seemingly unstoppable enemy, they pin their hopes on a final attempt for freedom, but that means they must turn their backs on their home forever.
Devon is from the UK, having lived in many places until finally settling in the Midlands. His career in public services started in his teens and has provided a wealth of experiences, both good and some very bad, which form the basis of the book ideas that cause regular insomnia.
He first started reading for fun as an adult, having tried his hardest to avoid anything resembling academia growing up, and at that point the world became a far bigger place. He has been reading, at least one book at a time, ever since.
His debut works, the After It Happened series, (Survival, Humanity, Society) were published in April 2016 followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The first part of the series concluded with the release of Rebellion which was published in June 2017.
Storming high into the charts with the first books of the After It Happened series, Devon launched into the top 10 sellers listings in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, and he made the decision to write full time shortly after the launch of Hope.
Devon’s self-published beginnings caused a stir in the publishing world, and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press.
Further works have seen the start of a multi-author series, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic cross genre, futuristic dystopian and alternative history zombie apocalypse. Spin-off books from the After It Happened world have been announced for 2018.
'Annihilation' was a fantastic ending to the six book Toy Soldiers series. We get to see the plight of the humans come full circle. There are more devastating loses as the characters fight the never-ending battle against the zombies. The conclusion shows the characters still battling the hordes but with much more knowledge and capabilities than at the beginning. They have more safety now that they have migrated to the U.S., and life has resumed to a level of normalcy not known since before the initial outbreak decades before. There are still so many unknowns - Will the zombie outbreak ever be eradicated? Will the remaining survivors ever get to live without having to be hyper-vigilant for life and death zombie battles? Will enough living souls survive to produce future generations and save the human race from extinction? Sad to see this well written and highly entertaining series conclude. Unfortunately, all good things must end. Narrator John Lee did a phenomenal job voicing this entire series and made listening a thrill.
Yet another excellent read from Mr Ford. The characters are so well built you actually know them and knowing that this was going to be the last one of the series made it all the harder, hoping your favourites survive! Not wanting to give any spoilers, all I will say is I cried buckets twice!! At the end of the the last book I couldn't work out how or where the story would go, never mind come to an end but Devon did it and did it superbly. A very satisfying end despite not wanting it to! However....he had to go and give us an epilogue with the chance of it maybe carrying on, or maybe a spin off, or maybe a one off for a certain character! I hope there is because Mr Ford is such a good story teller I believe he could take any of his books and keep them going through any character or in any direction and he would keep me reading and thoroughly entertained. Always an excellent adventure and emotional rollercoaster and a true pleasure!
Definitely one of the more enjoyable and well-written 'Complete Series of Pulp Zombie Novels for One Credit' bundles I've come across in my short time on Audible.
I found this (and the series as a whole) a really fun read to pass the evenings after long days of work, and it was refreshing to read zombie post-apoc not only set in England, but also set in the 1980s.
After enjoying John Lee's narrative work on two of Alastair Reynolds' sci-fi books earlier in the year, he really adds a touch of class to an oft-maligned sub-genre.
I'm glad it ended the way it did, and the epilogue was crazy.
Satisfying is the word ...as so often used by fellow reviewers of this final book in the Toy Soldiers series. Devon C. Ford has written a compelling, thrilling, and frightening saga in his Toy Soldiers series. This is a new take on "the Living Dead" genre that offers many surprises, plus characters (good and bad) that will keep you reading "just one more chapter" until your eyes beg you to take a break. This series is not predictable by any means. A note to American readers: Don't let the fact this takes place in Great Britain steer you away; people are people everywhere and, even if the setting is hard to imagine for those who are not familiar with England, Scotland, etc., the topography is still the same as most places in North America, so it is easy to visualize the small towns and giant cities and the rolling country between. Ford does a great job describing these places.
Ford's writing and grasp of characterization and psychology, his knowledge of military matters, biological warfare, and mankind's determination to survive a disaster beyond their control lends credibility to what would otherwise be another "dead cannibals walking" story. Thus, the reader is held rapt, disbelief set aside.
If this is your genre of choice for reading material (and I have read a lot in this genre), I highly recommend the Toy Soldiers series as the top selection for you. For those readers who have faithfully perused books 1 through 5 in the series, you will find book 6 ends on both a satisfying and realistic note. No spoilers here. Just get the book and see for yourself! I love the series enough to give it a permanent place of my KEEPER SHELF of books.
Once again, kudos to author Devon C. Ford for a series well done!
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box. (Audible Membership)
It ends up a hunted retreat, with sins of the CIA officer coming to life in the worst possible way. However, the groups of those that had started off together and been separated for various reasons, plus a few that were gathered along the way, have a panic retreat, but the final ending, is best left to the author's rendition which far more dramatic and heartwenching than mybpoor synapses. It's been a great adventure, and although not my normal genre, I have enjoyed the journey.
In a cold, dark, and endlessly rainy land a small group of survivors hangs onto survival by a razors edge. Unlikely heroes will emerge to forge the way forward. Will their efforts be in vain or will they give those they lead and love a second chance at freedom and a safe and happy life. A new threat will emerge that will challenge and endanger all of their plans and threaten the downfall of all mankind.
Read all the books on the Toy Soldiers. Excellent writer. So many people that I found it a little confusing about who was who at times. Very emotional instances where my favorite guys were killed, especially Peter's guide and teacher. Peter was a real hero from start to finish. Thank you for keeping me up reading into the early hours.

I enjoyed the 6 books and read them all in a day. The issue I had was with spelling errors and often times a paragraph would just end in the middle of a sentence and the end of the sentence was the first line of the next paragraph. It was annoying.
I loved this series! There were a lot of military stuff I did not know what was what, but manage to get thru! I loved the characters! How they came to be together. Wish there were more in series! Thanks
Book six was a great finish to the series. Good character development and surprising finish. Well thought out title and like the way it came full circle.
Loved the books. Another fantastic series from one of my favourite writers. Well written, great plot line, characters you enjoy and just a great way to spend a few hours. Thoroughly recommend both the authour and the series.
