ספר סיפורים זה, פריין של כעשר שנים, הוא קובץ הסיפורים השני של יהושע קנז, לאחר "מומנט מוסיקלי", שהופיע לפני כח צי יובל שנים וקנה לו מקום של כבוד בספרותנו. אחדים מהסיפורים התפרסמו בכתבי עת וזכו לשבחים רבים.

About the author

Yehoshua Kenaz (Hebrew: ‎‎יהושע קנז, born Yehoshua Glass) was one of Israel's leading novelists. Kenaz studied Philosophy and Romance Languages at the Hebrew University, and French literature at the Sorbonne. A translator of French classics into Hebrew, he has worked on the editorial staff of the Ha'aretz newspaper. Kenaz, currently living in Tel Aviv, was awarded the 1995 Bialik Prize.

Frammenti israeliani
Non sono perfetti questi racconti, ma nell’insieme restituiscono un’idea della vita della gente comune in Israele. Mi riferisco alla grande varietà di ambienti e protagonisti: i bambini in una zona rurale, i conoscenti amanti del cinema a Tel Aviv, il giovane al servizio di leva, i condomini più o meno ansiosi. Non è comune trovare ambientazioni disparate nelle raccolte di racconti, sono spesso riflessioni su una certa dimensione del vivere. Questa no: riflette la vita in Israele, che è una vita variegata, come sono molto varie le provenienze dei cittadini, dall’Iran all’ex Unione Sovietica agli Stati Uniti, oppure autoctoni; è vario il paesaggio, dalla costa mediterranea al deserto; è varia l’organizzazione della vita, dal kibbutz agricolo alla vita a Tel Aviv ed è varia naturalmente la composizione dello stato: ebrei e musulmani che convivono più o meno pacificamente. Le vite dei cittadini sono frequentemente interrotte dal servizio militare. Si aggiungono riflessioni sull’autunno della vita, sull’alienazione e la solitudine. Tutto questo (e molto altro) è pigiato nei pochi racconti di questa raccolta e nell’insieme fanno un po’ girar la testa. La raccolta si chiude con un racconto dell’assurdo, molto divertente, che si presterebbe a una trasposizione cinematografica, in cui un gruppo di persone molto male assortite si ritrova a vedere in una casa privata un film erotico giapponese: esilarante, provare per credere.

סיפורים קצרים נפלאים, אם כי בכמה מקומות היו כל כך הרבה דמויות בעלילה הקצרה שהייתי צריך לחזור ולקרוא כדי להבין מי זה מי ומה בדיוק קורה שם.
ללא ספק, הסיפור הראשון, "בשר פרא, בשר זר" הוא המבריק ביותר. "הצגה יומית" הוא סיפור סוריאליסטי משעשע שחותם את הספר בקול תרועה. בינהם, הסיפורים מציגים דמויות שונות, בינהן מורכבות יותר ומורכבות פחות. "המסיבה" נגמר בטוויסט מעניין אם כי גורם לקורא לתהות מה בדיוק הוא פספס פה.

I remember that when I was in seventh grade – a year after moving to the United States from Israel – I told a fellow Israeli friend of mine that we could read Harry Potter in Hebrew, and then use that book as our reading “extra credit” for school, “and no one will know that we didn’t read it in English!” She looked at me confused, and then said that this plan made no sense. English had become her dominant language, so she would prefer to just read the book in English like we were supposed to.

I can’t pinpoint the exact time, but it was probably within a year when English became my dominant, scholarly language as well. And now, over twenty years later, the thought of reading a book in Hebrew from cover-to-cover fills me with a bit of dread – because it’s damn hard. Not only do I read significantly slower in Hebrew, but it also requires so much emotional labor to not feel like a failure for spending twice as long reading it than it would have taken to read a book in English.

So call this my “Hebrew Reclamation Journey.” Because, yes, English is my scholarly language, but Hebrew is my emotional one. And I want it back. When I began reading the first story in this short story collection, I knew that I had made the right decision in abandoning a mindless, bestselling thriller from the 1990s for this one. But more than that, I knew that I made the correct choice to reclaim Hebrew. Because the first story, about an Israeli family and their Holocaust survivor family member, touched on so many themes that I explore in my own research – especially in the way Israeli society has treated its survivor population. I wish all of the stories here could have been like that.

Of course, there were other elements of other stories I loved and felt deeply drawn to. Unsurprisingly, not many books I have read have military service as part and parcel of all their characters’ lives. It was in mine, so I felt seen seeing it here.

It’s funny. Because many of these stories had aspects that made me feel seen. And many others did not. I guess that’s what happens when you’re truly a Third Culture Kid. You feel connected to both cultures, but also connected to neither.

קלרה ניצולת שואה, גרה אצל אחיה ואשתו ומדמיינת שצומחות לה גבשושיות של בשר זר. היא יוצאת לטייל עם יואב, גם הוא עוף מוזר.
• רגע מת בזיכרון
צביקה, בני, יאיר ואבשלום המפגר פוגשים בפרדס את דאסה אליהו המשוגע שמוביל אותם אל גופת ערבי.
• עמרם
הילד ועמרם נולדו באותו יום ושניהם ינקו מאמו של עמרם. כשעמרם מגיע לצופים, הילדים צוחקים עליו והוא מבין שהילד סיפר להם משהו עליו. כשהילד הולך הביתה עמרם מפליא בו את מכותיו.
• חדר מספר 10
אב שעבר אירוע מוחי קל ובנו הדואג באים לנוירולוג ומחכים הרבה זמן עד לבוא הרופא שמתייחס ברשלנות ובגסות רוח. כעבור מספר חודשים האב מת.
• התיק השחור
ילד ואביו במסעדה, הילד בקושי אוכל קצת חומוס ורק מדמיין דברים בנוגע לתיק שחור המונח על כיסא סמוך.
• מקרה שיזף
חייל מרשה למפקדו להשתמש במכשיר הקשר בניגוד להוראות ואח"כ נתבקש לקחת על עצמו את האחריות. כשכולם מקבלים דרגת רב"ט הוא נשאר טוראי פשוט. גם שנים אחר כך הדבר מרגיז אותו.
• דירה עם כניסה בחצר
מר ברלינר הזקן מעורר פניקה אצל הדייר מ' בגלל תיבת דואר גדושה שעל דלת הדירה עם כניסה בחצר.
• המסיבה
מסיבה שמתפקששת בדירתו החדשה של רפי. קבל הטלוויזיה החדשה נחתך בזמן משחק מכבי-וארזה 78-77, דלת הכניסה והדלת לשירותים לא נפתחות ובסוף יש גם גופה בשירותים.
• הצגה יומית
שורש וחברו נוסעים אל קריגר כדי לצפות בסרט פורנו, אבל שם העניינים מסתבכים עם סמל וקצין משטרה והכל נגמר עם תאונה קטלנית בה נהרג הילד של קריגר.

הכתיבה קלילה ושופעת, התוכן מרתק לרוב, אך לוקה באי מתן פתרון לשאלות המסקרנות הנובעות מן הסיפורים. אף על פי כן גיוון הנושאים מעוררי נוסטלגיה מחיי המדינה והלשון העשירה, לעתים אף פיוטית, מעניקים יופי מיוחד לקובץ כולו.
