Sa Bukang-Liwayway ng Isang Kalayaan at Iba Pang Kuwento

Rate this book

Rosario de Guzman-Lingat (1924–1997) wrote a large number of novels and short stories for the country's most popular magazines in the 1960s and 1970s. Working within the limitations of popular fiction, Lingat nonetheless succeeded in constructing narratives that shed light on the experiences of the postwar generation: family discord, psychological breakdowns due to both personal and societal traumas, the impact of the Pacific War, a deeply divided nation, and the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated world.

My first book by Rosario de Guzman-Lingat (1924-1977) and she just amazed me.

De Guzman-Lingat was a prodigious writer in Filipino in the 60's and 70's. She wrote mostly for weekly comic magazines like Liwayway, Sampaguita, Tagumpay and Filipino Free Press. Her works were popular among the masses but she was only noticed by literary critics in the early 70's after she joined the Ateneo de Manila's Palihan in 1970. Prior to that time, the authors that were considered literary were those who wrote in English or those authors whose works had strong political context if not peppered with Marxist ideologies. De Guzman-Lingat was neither of those. Her works are about social realism.

This book, published in 2003 by Ateneo de Manila University Press, is a collection of 17 short stories by her. The banner story, "Sa Bukang-Liwayway ng Isang Kalayaan" is about the end of World War 2 in Manila, when the Japanese forces, chased by American soldiers, were retreating from Manila. It is a story of 2 soldiers who were both guerrilla soldiers prior to the one becoming a makapili or a traitor. The ending connects to the present time when one of the soldiers' son becomes a demonstrator against the government. The father then asks himself in reflection, what wrong has he done in rearing up his son.

There are many other beautiful well-crafted stories that made my reading of this book very enjoyable. The stories are short and each is enough for one bathroom morning visit. Among my favorite ones are "Mapuputlang Pangarap", "Bawal Pumasok" and "Ano ang Nangyari Kay Raffy?" Why are they my favorites? Weeks after reading them, the stories are still in my mind. Even up to now, they just don't go away easily.

If you love the stories you used to read in Liwayway or other comic magazines of your younger years, read this book. Reading them is definitely a great way to know more about the stories of people during the 40's, 50's and 60's. Thank you, Ateneo Press for gathering De Guzman-Lingat's works. Thank you, Soledad Reyes for a well-written introduction to the book.

Rosario de Guzman-Lingat rocks!
