With an old picture of her mother, nothing but the clothes on her back, a song needing to be sung and a bus ticket to Allenville, SC, Starr Logan is ready to start over. Running away from everyone and everything , Starr heads to the one place that her mother told her 'everything will always be okay'. Will Starr be able to find the fresh start she's looking for, or will the ghosts from the past make her run again?

"Promise me that if you ever get into trouble, that you will always go home."
This short story appealed to me because I'm from South Carolina myself, and I couldn't help but be a little curious about someone else's experience with those beautiful "South Carolina Nights."
The story begins with our main character, Star leaving the big city running away from something in her life, as so many of us can often relate to in our mid-20s. She's not realizing that when you run, no matter what, you always take yourself with you. We travel with Star as she learns that in her effort to run away, she really is running to that safe place her mother promised would always be waiting for her.
In the short story's 40 pages, we quickly become invested. It's a story of budding romantic and familial love captured beautifully by the author. E.S. McMillan's storytelling is fast-paced, yet thorough in character and plot development. The tone and voice of the story engulf us in the scene and with emotion. I felt like a friend of Star's, watching quietly as her heartwarming story unfolds.
I recommend reading this at lunchtime to take a moment to yourself to regroup on a hectic workday or a weekend morning to set your mood for the day in a positive direction. "South Carolina Nights" reminds us, in these trying and changing times, of a mother's promises, and the kindness of strangers. When you're looking for a little hope and encouragement, this will definitely be a story you'll want to revisit again and again.
When you finally find home the world changes around you sometimes so unexpectedly perfectly even though it may seem overwhelming. When Starr lost her mom she promised to go home to a place she'd only ever heard about in her mom's stories. What she finds there will change her future forever!
Allenville is one of my favorite fictional towns, and Starr, Javier, and crew make it even better. There are definitely bittersweet and I did tear up a but, but only in the best way. I especially enjoyed seeing how Starr fit into the rest of the town residents. I always love a twist!
omg... omg this was good.. this is sweet and cute.. short story with a lot of heart.. the writing is amazing and the cover is gorgeous. i love it so much..
I love when this author interconnects the characters from her previous stories! Imagine how surprised I was to find out that Starr and a certain character from All Around the Sour Gummi Patch are related?!!!!!
Starr's mother had always told her if she ever needed a safe place, go to Allenville, so that's where she headed when things in her life were going out of control. Once there she saw what her mother had always saw in the place.
I LOVE McMillan! I am so glad, I found her and she found me. This book was short but oh so sweet. Nina, Starr, Maybelline, and Javier. The timing was spot on for this read. I need an Allenville in my life right about now! I will be reading a lot more of her this year.
