Una parola strana e meravigliosa e il suo significato per ogni giorno dell’anno. Chi sapeva che “dringle” è “perdere tempo in modo pigro e indolente” magari un pò ubriaco? O che “un lieto fine” improvviso potrebbe essere definito una “eucotastrofe”? Cerchi una parola alternativa a “stronzate”? Quindi prova “taradiddle”. “A Word for Every Day of the Year” è un’affascinante raccolta di 365 parole e le loro definizioni, perfetta per chi ama la ricchezza della lingua inglese, la sua diversità e vuole espandere il proprio vocabolario.

Ogni giorno offre una parola rara e straordinaria con la sua storia e definizione e occasionalmente una sfida per includerla nelle nostre vite. Me lo sono fatto arrivare mentre sono qui in “lockdown” assoluto tra i monti della Costa d’Amalfi e Amazon, in sole 48 ore, me lo ha fatto arrivare (ed era anche sabato!).

Per non impazzire di Covid 19, ti leghi ai libri e alle loro parole. Pensi a quello che ti può accadere in un tempo prossimo venturo quanto mai problematico, impossibile da prospettare e programmare.
Potrà anche consumarsi nel tempo, ed anche giustamente, perchè ti rendi conto che di luce ne hai consumata tanta, in forma di anni, e puoi anche uscire di scena, “game over!”, come si dice e chi s’è visto si è visto.

Invece capita di imbatterti in questo libro che ti si apre davanti con le sue pagine in maniera digitale e ti rendi conto che su di “lui” puoi tentare di lanciare una ipoteca sul nuovo anno e così sperare di programmare e progettare. Te lo fai arrivare cartaceo e così potrai averlo tra le mani e porre alla sua scrittura le classiche fatidiche, canoniche domande, costruendo i 365 giorni del nuovo anno 2021.

Saranno 365 e non 366 come questo infausto 2020, anno bisesto e funesto che tra un paio di settimane finalmente finirà. Dò un appuntamento a me stesso e a chi mi legge il 1 gennaio 2021, il Nuovo Anno che segnerà la fine di questo maledetto 2020.

Limiting myself to one day at a time was perhaps a mistake as it gave me time to nit pick rather. For instance, an alphabetical index of the words with the relevant date would have been a helpful addition. In the event of future editions, perhaps also a guide to pronunciation could be included thus eliminating the need to search in a good dictionary.

However, there were some interesting asides and plenty of references for further reading. And the cover is beautiful ...

Another enjoyable read for reading throughout 2021. A LOT of words were VERY difficult to pronounce! 🙈
