Windsor, Wyoming #1

Home for a Cowboy

Rate this book
Las doesn’t date seasonal workers. Marco’s on a three-month contract.

Lassiter Windsor-March has been planning for his future for as long as he can remember and he knows exactly where that future lies: at his family’s ranch in Wyoming. What doesn’t lie in his future is a summer fling with one of the seasonal workers—they never stick around.

Even if one of those workers is the college crush he’s invited to work a summer job at the ranch.

Marco Terlizzese is as laissez-faire as Las isn’t. He might not know where he’ll be once his contract with Windsor Ranch is up, but he knows three months is plenty of time to get his long-time crush to agree to go out with him.

Amid a starry summer sky, their chemistry ignites as feelings deepen, forcing Las and Marco to decide where they truly belong.

Hands cupping Las’s face, Marco kissed him back like the two weeks since they’d seen each other had been two years. Fierce yet gentle, warming Las from the inside out. He could picture them here, ten, twenty, thirty years from now, still spending summers in the tent, cooking dinner over the fire. With their stars and their mountains on their land. And when Marco pulled back and rested their foreheads together, when he murmured two words that made Las’s heart swell, he imagined them tethered together for all time, shoots digging into the earth and rooting them into place.

a close 5-star. almost perfect in my eyes. one of my new favorites. romantic, tender, sweet, and gentle. what more do i need?

The first 35% of this story was so boring, oh my gaaawd! 😭 I was listening to the audiobook, and I think that actually made it worse.

After that point, the story did get a little better, but it was still too slow for my taste. Las and Marco wanted each other, but Las refused to give Marco a chance because he was convinced they had no future together, which made no sense because how could he know that for sure? Marco didn't know what he wanted to do with his life, but he did know that he wanted Las... enough that he drove from Vermont to Wyoming to work on his family's ranch with him.

While I liked Marco, I never warmed up to Lassiter. This entire story was underwhelming, and I was never invested. If I hadn't purchased the audiobook, I wouldn't have been able to finish it. 1.5 stars, rounded up

An adorable slow burn friends to lovers. Add some cowboys to the picture. And the longing for a forever future home with someone you love.
Home for a Cowboy is a classic Amy Aislin, with all the adorbs, low angst and a traitor horse!
I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it for you who hate complication, the right book for this time of pandemic and chaos. We don't need any more chaos, read this book.

What an amazing, fluffy and quick read by Amy Aislin. This is the second book of hers I read and I fell in love with it from the first page.

Marco and Lass are two very lovable characters and I would really like to continue reading about their happy life together.

Marco is a man who just graduated from college with a degree he never wanted, that’s why he finds himself lost and without knowing what he really wants.

Lass on the other hand, is very sure about his future, his standing in life and who he is. The only problem is that his ex boyfriend and long time friend apparently didn’t want the same.

At the beginning of the story we have a Lass who had just been stood up by a blind date and when Marco appears and shares with him that he has nothing to do during the summer (and that we would love to take Lass out in a date), he thinks it’s a good idea to offer him a job at his family ranch in Wyoming.

Through the pages we find out that these two boys have been pining for each other a long time and we see them taking their friendship to the next level.

Like I said before, this book is a very cute read and I flew through the pages. I love Amy’s writing style and I will be checking out her other stories.

Thank you so much to A Novel Take for the ARC.

I liked the setting. I loved the activities that Las and Marco did together. I wish there were more scenes about the horses.

Unfortunately, the BIG BAD CONFLICT in this story was that Las refused to take things further because Marco was only a seasonal worker. Like he couldn't think of an alternative way, or how to compromise, or heck, even really asked whether or not Marco would like to stay at Windsor and explored the things that Marco could do.

That annoyed me.

Holy mackerel! So much repetition and unnecessary detail! Everything is told in lists. Lists of stores in the town, what the two MCs do, etc. Yes, I understand that I just used a list to describe the author’s lists, but I’m not penning a book. It was so aggravating and I feel bad because I liked Marco and Las. Their story probably would’ve been nice if I didn’t have to read the same things over and over. But ultimately, the downfall for me was those damn lists! I want a story told to me, not a consecutive list of fragments to describe something. The writing style was so different from AA’s Stick Side series and I didn’t care for it at all.

Tucked between feed stores and supply outlets and tool merchants were a cozy mom-and-pop grocer, a couple of pubs, bakeries, restaurants, a post office, a bridal store, a general store, and a real estate office.

It was busy on a Saturday morning as Marco and Las exited the diner they’d just had breakfast in. Cars passed by with canoes or kayaks strapped to their roofs. Shoppers came and went from stores and art galleries. Tourists stood on street corners, staring in bewilderment at a town map. Couples and young families dined on the terrace of the three breakfast restaurants. Employees redesigned window displays and brought out sandwich boards advertising the day’s sales. Friends ran into each other on the sidewalk and stopped to chat. A staff member from an outfitter across the street seemed to be giving instructions for whatever tour they were headed out on.

And the week sped up from there: interviews with the press, skills testing, participation in a youth hockey clinic, a 3-on-3 tournament.

He met the team’s veterans. Participated in a cookie bake-off to benefit a youth shelter. Was put through his paces by coaches who’d been in the league for years.

He kept seeking Las out to share a thought with him. Kept turning to the sky to seek the stars at night, finding only a partial representation of the panorama he’d gotten used to in Wyoming. Kept looking for nature in the city.

Horse-drawn carriage rides, a scavenger hunt, stalls set up with local bakeries and cafés selling tarts and iced coffees and patriotically themed cookies, a bingo table, a pop-up bouncy castle for kids, a clown making balloon animals, a puppet theater, face painting.

So. Many. Lists!!! A couple of examples are just fine. We don’t need to be overloaded with useless information.

There were also contradictions, errors, and weird sentences. Las said he got his first kiss, first everything, from his childhood friend Ben. Then he told Marco he got his first kiss from some seasonal worker. One sentence told us that a baby deer was standing on four legs. Really? 😲 How odd that they would stand on four legs! 🙄 Interests were “peaked” instead of “piqued”, someone turned on their “heal” instead of “heel”. It just didn’t stop so I quit. I will think twice before I pick up anything else written by this author.

The descriptions of the landscape were beautiful as were the depictions of Las and Marco’s feelings. For men with such different personalities, they fit together really well; perfect complements. I’m a sucker for a well-done low-angst romance which I definitely felt this was. Even when there was a hint of conflict, it was never dwelt on or felt over the top and was wrapped up believably.
The side characters: parents, siblings, Austin and Marco’s roommate felt fairly well-fleshed out. I think we had just enough time with the characters to understand Marco and Las independently from how each perceived the other and to get a feel for their personalities. With that said, I do feel like Marco’s parents stood out a bit more even though they had less page time.
I can’t think of an instance where I felt the author told where she could have shown which I think can be tricky with a book involving pining. I felt their attraction both from afar and when together.
This book was definitely a winner and Amy Aislin is an author I would read again.

Home For a Cowboy is the first book I’ve read by Amy Aislin, but I look forward to reading more. I was completely engaged with this story, it’s so well written and flowed seamlessly. There was so much pining in this story, So.Much.Pining. And I loved it. Las and Marco are so endearing! Apparently I’ve been on an opposites-attract kick lately, without even realizing it, and these two fit that bill as well. I loved how Las knew what he wanted out of life and for his future, and how opposite that was from Marco, who knew what he didn’t want, but couldn’t quite figure out what it was that he did want. Until he came to Windsor Ranch and found exactly what he wasn’t looking for.

And now I want to move to Wyoming and work at a ranch. Ok, maybe an indoor job at a ranch, but still. For me, the atmosphere and location of Home for a Cowboy were just as important to this story as the characters. Ms. Aislin did a really nice job of making me feel like I was there with them.

I'm looking forward to more books in this series- there are a few characters that definitely deserve their own stories!

I love this story of a hockey player turned outdoors enthusiast. I've read and enjoyed her hockey player series so it was fun to make that connection.

Las and Marco are strong characters and cute together, but the descriptions of the ranch and Wyoming really stole the show. The fact that the name of this series is Windsor, Wyoming gives me hope that the town will continue to play a large part in the rest of the series. I loved how Marco got interested in photography and nature and the fact he found more to stay in Wyoming for than just his relationship with Las.

There were a lot of interesting side characters like Austin and Reid and I'm hoping they'll get their own stories in this series.

This is the beginning of a new series and it was really good.

Les has always known he belongs at his family’s ranch. It’s his home and he went to school to be able to work and eventually help run it. Marco is a recent college graduate and former collegiate hockey player that has no clue what he wants to do, but has no interest in going pro.

They spend the summer together on the ranch and fall in love.

Like I said, I really enjoyed this, but I wish their communication was a little better.

I also loved the secondary characters and hope their friends Austin and Cal’s book is next.

May well just be me, but I was quite underwhelmed with this story, which seemed to revolve around miscommunication by practically everyone. Las and Marco, Las and his parents, Marco and his parents, Austin and Cal...

Disappointing, but I won't be going any further with the series.

DNF @ 13%.

I just found this really, really boring. Not the plot, but the actual writing.

I hadn't recalled reading anything from this author before, but turns out this is actually my 3rd attempt, the previous two also being DNFs, so I think it's safe to cross this author off my list.

Looking for something light and comfortable with stunning depictions of the Wyoming countryside? Pick up a copy of Home for a Cowboy, by Amy Aislin, the first in her new series Windsor, Wyoming. This initial title is a slow-burn, mild-angst, opposites attract romance, with a smidgen of self-discovery thrown in, that left me feeling content and smiling in its wake.

Lassiter Windsor-March (Las) has always known his place is on the family ranch. He once thought it would be alongside his best friend and first love, Ben MacIsaac. Ben had other ideas, breaking Las’ heart. Shielding himself from a repeat of the devastating heartbreak, Las doesn’t do casual, or get involved with anyone who might be in his life temporarily.

Wide open spaces and beautiful vistas are the backdrop for ‘Home for a Cowboy’, as the search for home and happiness unfolds.

Easygoing NHL hopeful, Marco Terlizzese loves the game, but not the pressure nor the demands that come along with the sport. His Italian family values planning for the future, which includes the promise of a steady income. Nevertheless, Marco doesn’t have a plan, and is facing an uncertain future, much to the dismay of his folks.

Marco has an enormous superficial crush on gorgeous specimen Las. It grows each Thursday, when he visits his workplace coffee cart. When the chance presents itself, Marco asks Las on a date, but is turned down. Instead, Las offers him a position as a seasonal summer worker on his family’s ranch. With no plans and needing the income, he accepts Las’ offer.

What starts as a subconscious desire for Las and a spur of the moment decision for Marco, creates a trajectory that both Las and Marco secretly and subconsciously desire, but never expect. Theirs is a slow burn that builds as they explore the beauty of the Wyoming countryside. Las has a plan to make Marco fall in love with the ranch and ultimately radiate the same fondness he feels. They experience its beauty, via hiking, sleeping under the stars, dancing, photography, even meddling family and friends, or enjoying a country market. The list goes on and on, as their respective crushes transform into a camaraderie drowning in feelings.

What starts as a subconscious desire for Las and a spur of the moment decision for Marco, creates a trajectory that both Las and Marco secretly and subconsciously desire, but never expect.

A lack of communication feeds their hidden fears and insecurities. Las fears that Marco is destined for greater things, and that the city boy will eventually reject and leave the country. Marco fears that Las’ past makes him unable to commit for fear of rejection. Their inner struggles combine with outside influence from those surrounding them permitting Las and Marco to grasp for what they desire.

Wide open spaces and beautiful vistas are the backdrop for Home for a Cowboy, as the search for home and happiness unfolds. The dreams, desires and fears Las and Marco endure authenticate them as a couple, whilst each retains their unique individuality. Their resulting love story is a treasure to behold.

I really loved Marco, but It took some time for me to warm up to Las. I understood his reservations about starting a relationship with Marco, after being so hurt in the past, but I really wanted to shake him at times.

This was a slow-burn, with UST so thick you could practically cut it with a knife. The chemistry between Marco and Las was amazing and I loved that, although they didn’t have a whole lot in common, they could lay out under the stars and talk for hours. They just fit together. My one complaint is as descriptive as the story was — see the paragraph below for explanation — I felt the sex scenes were rushed and I would have preferred them be drawn out a bit more.

For the most part this was an enjoyable story, but as I mentioned above, it was too descriptive and I found myself skimming ahead to get to the dialogue and the meat of the story. This is just a personal preference. I know some people love being completely transported into the surroundings of the characters, but while I want to know where they are and what things look like, it was just too much for me. Again, this is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Still, this was a good start to the series and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. There are some gentlemen whose story I’m really looking forward to reading, and of course, I’m hoping to get glimpses of Las and Marco throughout the rest of the series. Recommendable!

Reluctant Opposites

You would expect a romance between college graduate classmates working for the summer on a ranch in Wyoming to have some hoop-dee-doo, especially since one of them is a hockey player and the other one basically will own the ranch one day and openly gay to his family.

You would expect to follow free-wheeling 20-somethings as they are let loose for three months before they have to go back to the real world, in the case of Marco the hockey goalie perhaps to try out for the NHL, and in the case of Lassiter (Las) off to graduate school in agro-economics in Laramie. Three months of testosterone laden lust is what you might expect.

You would be wrong.

There is very little hoop-dee-doo in this tale but a whole lot do-see-doh-ing-around. Marco pines strongly for Les, who was a bit of a mystery to him in their years at a small college in Vermont. Les pines strongly for Marco but is terrified that he will be left alone again once Marco's contracting job at the ranch ends in September, just like his ex, whom he grew up with, left him when they were in college.

Instead we get a slow burn of a romance that has one or two steamy scenes and a lot of introspection, which makes this a sweet read and recommended.

Las just needs someone to show that they love him and are going to stay, while he has a wonderful family and loves his family’s ranch he hasn’t found anyone that wants to stay. Marco hasn’t found anywhere that he feels he belongs until he starts to work at Las’s family ranch and there he discovers so much more than he could have imagined.

I liked watching these two discover what they have wanted for a long time. Moreover I could feel Marco’s hurt and longing for so much more that he is finally able to find. It looks like this is a new series so I look forward to seeing more of the ranch.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review.

I really enjoyed this! I was a little bit worried the story would feel a bit slow but it definitely didn't. I'm not an outdoor person at all but this book really made me want to live on a ranch haha, so that's proof Amy Aislin can write really well!

There was slow burn (which I love) and pining without being too frustrating and full of angst. Las and Marco had really different personalities but they still fit so well together and I loved their dynamic and their growing relationship.

I also really liked to read about Marco's journey (or what to call it) in to photography since it's something I like very much myself and it was written so that his passion became really interesting.

There was also some other lovely characters we got to meet, like Reid, Austin and Cal, so I hope we get more books about them :)

This was a sweet, low angst read that I absolutely recommend :)

A Joyfully Jay review.

I took a chance on this book because the blurb sounded enticing and I wanted to give this author a try. But I’ll admit, I’m not one who generally swoons over cowboy books, and I tend to pass them by. I’m glad I picked this one up though. First off, there’s definitely less “cowboying” going on here than I expected, since Las’ family’s ranch is both a working ranch and a guest experience. A super fancy dude ranch, if you will. We see most of this, since Marco is working on that side of the operation, though there are definitely moments that will appeal to the cowboy-loving reader. So I think this book is the best of both worlds in that regard, and definitely worked better for me.

I think the author did a nice job capturing two very different young men. Las and Marco are both 22, and while Marco has no idea what he wants to do with his life, Las has known from a young age exactly where his heart and passion lie. The dichotomy between them was a nice balance, and I loved the growth portrayed in both of them.

Las is an awful, awful character.

Essentially he wants to work and live on his family’s ranch and refuses to date anyone who won’t stay with forever on the land.

1. That’s creepy as fuck. He blamed his ex for leaving him and almost had this inner vendetta.
2. He refused to date Marco on the basis he may leave and he couldn’t handle that.

I didn’t like Las he just seemed manipulative to me. Also the story read like I was missing chunks of the story.

Awful.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the first book in a new series, and I shall definitely be looking out for future installments. I loved the world around Windsor and the engaging people we have met so far. I am already hopeful of certain individuals getting their HEAs!

Whilst Las and Marco have very different backgrounds, specialisms and even interests, they are actually very similar in their love of the peace and quiet. We learn this as we see how comfortable Las is on his family ranch, where he intends to live out his days. We also see Marco find himself in the same open Wyoming spaces. The transition for Marco is almost smoother than Las believing that it is even possible for this man he cares about to love the place as much as he does.

The plot cleverly gives them both points of interest to examine, as well as ensuring that they can spend a good amount of time together. Full of little touches which are designed to draw us into the haven they are creating together; I felt, even if I didn't experience, the wonder of the open skies, the joy of watching wildlife in its home. It heightens the senses, so that once they are close, it feels very intimate and incredibly romantic as well as deeply passionate.

The switching between hot and steamy, and then family, work, scenery is intense and makes a desire to keep turning the pages almost impossible to resist!

Now to be patient and wait for book 2...

This book didn’t read like the usual cowboy romance for me. Yes, it set on a Wyoming ranch and there’s one loner young cowboy as one of the leading men. But besides (learning to) horse-riding, there were also star-gazing, hiking and camping, and a bit of hockey. I guess I still hang up over the last Amy Aislin’s book (I read) and HOME FOR A COWBOY served as some sort transition from her hockey world to the cowboy world on “Windsor, Wyoming” series.

The story centered on Marco and Lassiter, fresh out of college and on summer break before continuing on with their life’s plan. The leading men had built a rapport off page and through alternate POVs we learned what’s transpired when they looked back on that period. Marco was an easy to like character with his open and pleasant personalities. Las - I think - was an acquired taste with his brooding nature and hot and cold treatment to Marco.

What I loved about this book was the cosiness with which Las and Marco relationship developing - I mentioned earlier the stargazing et al - the laid-back pace shaping the sort of romantic courtship that won this reader over. I wasn’t too crazy with the whole misunderstanding or quick to judge phase, but happy that either characters didn’t let things fester too long and even took time to reflect and mend the fences so to speak.

As the start of a new series, I felt HOME FOR A COWBOY is up to par, setting the premises and potential characters for the upcoming stories to follow (after this). I definitely look forward to the next installment of this series.

This book turned out to be good enough that I decided to tough out listening to a narrator who was a bit hard to listen to. I'm a voice/music professional, so that kind of thing is hard for me to ignore. But I decided to keep listening, and the story pulled me in enough that I got used to the narrator and really enjoyed Lassiter and Marco's story.

The book started just a bit slow, but quickly picked up and was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The author's vivid descriptions of Wyoming make me want to go there to see for myself! This is a very sweet, very low-angst story with lovely romance and a bit of steam.

Audiobook: The Amazon reviews for Aaron Hokanson (Narrator) are good, but it's a very small number of reviews. Most people will probably find his narrating good, and when he was voicing characters, he was quite good. It was in the non-voiced narration that his unvaried inflections made things harder to understand. As with many narrations, though, he improved as the book went on. I listened on Audible. If you care about what I meant by the inflection thing and are a voice nerd like me, read on!

His MANner of NARrating CONstantly went UP and DOWN, reGARdless of the SYNtax and WHAT would BRING out the MEANing of the SENtence.

A more natural and understandable way of narrating that sentence would be: His manner of NARrating COnstantly went up and down, reGARdless of the SYNtax and what would bring out the MEANing of the SENtence.

The second version, with fewer stressed syllables, is the more natural way people speak, and so it's much easier to follow.

This is an enjoyable, low-angst book about two men who long for a future together while life seems to be taking them in opposite directions. Las left his home in Wyoming to go to college in Vermont, following the love of his life. That man, also his best friend, decided to go to England and not return, leaving Las dumped and heartbroken. Now, several years later, he doesn't trust in people who may leave and he doesn't do casual, so while he is very attracted to fellow student, Marco, he says no when Marco asks him out. Instead, he invites him to work a summer job on Las's family ranch.

Marco feels aimless. His life has been built around a hockey scholarship, but he doesn't think he's interested in working for the NHL. He received a Communications degree, but he doesn't want to work in the field. When he accepts Las's summer job offer, he doesn't know what to expect, but it wasn't to fall in love with the peace and quiet of Wyoming. Also, although Las turned him down for a date, the attraction is still there and it's beginning to feel mutual. It's beginning to feel like a lot more.

This book sets up a new series, with a supportive family and friends. It also has a beautiful love when Las and Marco decide to take a chance on a future together.
