Gigantic dinosaurs, tiny dinos, dinosaurs of every they&;re gathered here for a big parade and kids are invited to join in the fun! Kelly Milner Halls specializes in high interest, well researched nonfiction for young readers. Her books include TALES OF THE CRYPTIDS, SAVING THE BAGHDAD ZOO, IN SEARCH OF SASQUATCH and ALIEN INVESTIGATION. But she is also an avid YA fan and loves realistic fiction including GIRL MEETS BOY, the anthology she edited for Chronicle (January 2012). Her first short story is in that anthology. She hopes it won't be her last. When she's not writing or doing school visits, she works for her friend and mentor Chris Crutcher in Spokane.
Dinosaur Parade is a book about pretending that dinosaurs are marching in a parade in order to learn some facts about them. You can learn the names of different types of dinosaurs, how big they were, and where they were discovered. This book has a helpful feature; below the name of each type of dinosaur, the name is spelled phonetically so readers know how to pronounce it. The pages of the book are laid out so that each page represents a different dinosaur’s turn to march in the parade. There is a poem that runs through the whole book. The poem is located on the top of each page, above the pictures of the marching dinosaurs. At the bottom of each page the name of the dinosaur are listed along with some quick facts about each. The pictures are very colorful and show a lot of details such as the dinosaur’s scales. This book is a little difficult to categorize as far as age. Primary ages up to 6 would enjoy the colorful pictures, as well as the rhyming poem that the dinosaurs march too, but they would probably skip over the information at the bottom of each page. The information at the bottom of each page would be appropriate for 6-8 primary ages, but the illustrations would be a little too childlike. I would recommend this book if you were just looking for a cute book to read with your child, but not if you were looking for a lot of facts about dinosaurs.
Julia says 3 stars, if I rated this on my account it'd be 2 stars. It's for children younger than Julia but she's not picky about that - if it includes anything about any dinos she'll devour it happily. I have to say though, I really didn't like the time-line-like list of dinos along the bottom of the pages. I did like that some very little known dinosaurs were added but it made for awkward reading. Each double page spread had about 5 dinos with about 5 facts about each. But they were the same five facts. That's good in some ways but bad in others. How many times can you repeat a version of a dinosaur name pronunciation followed by how long it was followed by the period it lived followed by where it was discovered followed by what year it was named? It got old... fast. But I'd say it's good for toddlers, the actual story/poem part, skipping the fact time-line at the bottom.
This vibrant picture book by local author Kelly Milner Halls has a wonderful rhyming text that tells kids about the dinosaurs. The illustrations put the kids in the dinosaur parade, and by doing so show readers how big these dinosaurs were relative to the children. The kids are wildly diverse, a nice thing to see in a picture book that's not about diversity. Kids will have a ball with this one.
A well written book that effectively explains differences between dinosaur classifications with, as much as is possible, accurate depictions. The book provides a simple rhyming narrative for kids who just want to do surface reading, but if something strikes their fancy, annotated information about each dinosaur can be found at the bottom of the page. Well thought out and executed.
A lively rhyming book about dinosaurs. I totally dig this book! Did you know that the Tyrannosaurus Rex was named in 1905? So cool. This book is so fun kids will love it, the author does an excellent job of making the facts easy to absorb.
Great addition to a list of dinosaur books! Colorful double page displays each dinosaur family parading across with kids on them for approximate scale. Rhyming phrases and some info at the bottom and back page: meaning of names, size, where & when discovered.
This is a fun book to describe the different types of dinosaurs. There are great details, but it’s not too in-depth that it will be information overload for children. I also think it’s clever how they made it into a parade in order to separate the different types of dinosaurs.
Let's hope that the dinosaur/kid combination here isn't taken by Sarah Palin and her fellow travelers as proof that dinosaurs and humans once shared the earth....
