Tortured by memories of his wife’s murder at the hands of savage berserkers, yet commanded to wed, Magnus finds unexpected passion in his new bride’s arms.

But can Modwen’s love heal the wounds of his battle-scarred heart—or will another’s jealousy destroy them both?

Magnus is one of nine provocatively sensual tales within the Viking Surrender series.

Stories of suspense, seduction and adventure, told against the forbidding backdrop of medieval Scotland.

Journey together with indomitable heroes and intrepid heroines, as they discover that the raging storms of fear and passion can transform into enduring devotion.

A horde of battle-hardened, ferocious Nordic warriors.

A Pictish village at the mercy of its enemies.

A harrowing bargain struck for nine fearful and reluctant brides.

Delivered into Viking hands, claimed and conquered, each bride must accept that she belongs to her new master. But, as wedding nights bring surrender to duty, will fierce lovers also surrender their hearts?

The Highland wilderness is savage, life is perilous, and the future uncertain, but each Viking has sworn protection, and there are no lengths to which a man will not go to safeguard the woman he loves.

Bought the audiobook from chirpbooks.com when it was on sale for 99 cents.

Both main characters are widowed with children. The hero's sons are grown up and don't live with him so we don't see any interactions, just mentions of the sons here and there. The heroine's children (son and daughter) are younger, so they live with the H/h.

The hero's first wife was brutally raped and murdered, so he feels guilty for not being able to protect her. I forgot where he was at the time of her attack. Years go by and he hasn't/doesn't want to remarry. His yarl commanded him to marry the heroine though. I haven't read the first book so I'm going to assume that it was established in that book that the Vikings invaded the land of the Picts (the heroine's village). It could have been summarized in this book but I got a little distracted while listening to the audiobook, so I could have missed the background information.

Mowden is a willing bride, determined to make the best of her new marriage. She and her children are even learning to speak his language. Magnus refuses to get close to his new wife, physically and emotionally. He even sleeps in the forge (he's a blacksmith) over sharing the same bed with her.

The antagonist is the heroine's first husband's uncle, who wants the heroine for his own. Things happen and eventually, Magnus comes to his senses and decides to give his marriage a chance.

I came for the spice and, honestly, I wasn't even paying attention during those scenes. 😅 Sorry!

If you enjoy historical romance/erotica this is a must read. Although it is part of a great series it is a stand alone novel.
Great plot.
Fantastic characters who are developing beautiful throughout the book.
Emmanuelle has excelled in this telling of Magnus and Modwen.
Too many delta iOS would ruin the book
This is a five star book.
Pulsing shooting white hot stars.

I read this when it was part of a set (Vikings). Because not much has changed -- with the exception of a much-needed epilogue -- I'm going to leave my original review here.

First, a warning: Even though the set is now sold separately, it really does help to read the books in order since each refers to characters featured in other stories. I was a bit confused as to who some of the people were since they weren't identified and it's been a few months since I read the original stories. I think the authors should have rectified this since the books are now supposed to be stand-alones.

Now onto the actual book. Below is my opinion; take it for what it's worth.

All the books are enemies-to-lovers stories (in this case, though Modwen is a willing bride, Magnus is a very unwilling groom) and have three (as I saw it) overall themes. One is -- as another reviewer very wisely mentioned -- the importance of moving on from loss. The second is the blending of cultures (particularly welcome in today's anti-immigrant, us-vs.-them world) as each Pict and Viking character shares stories or customs from their respective lands; in this case, the epilogue provides us with . The third is dominance/submission broadly applied to an entire town. That is, the Vikings act as doms (protective providers who rescue the Picts from enemy attacks) and the Picts as submissives (those who swear their obedience in exchange for this protection). Thus, while both the men and women are marrying under duress (rather than just the women), it's the centuries-old marital bargain before the appearance of more modern views of marriage: each partner brings something tangible to the marriage that has nothing do with love or shared interests. In this case, the Vikings bring the brawn to defend the community, and the Picts provide the land. Of course, since this is romance, love does grow between the couples. And, because it's an erotic romance in this particular genre, the sexual acts are described in detail.

The first theme I mentioned -- overcoming grief and finding new love -- is most apparent in this particular book since the major obstacle between Modwen and Magnus is his feelings for and guilt over his dead wife. So, though Magnus is unkind to Modwen at first (unlike most of the other female characters in the original set, she is eager for the marriage), his reasons are understandable and he more than .

In addition, I was afraid that one plot point would become highly problematic (), but that didn't happen, thankfully.

I didn't know this author, but will be reading more of her as this was one of my favorites. Overall, this particular story is well-written with few editing or grammatical errors. There's decent world-building (I'm not an expert, but Ms. de Maupassant provides details on sword-making and weaving, Magnus and Modwen's respective spheres, that appear well-researched). I particularly liked that there was no dd (domestic discipline) -- as there is in most of the other books -- and I was really struck by how much more respect and caring there was between this couple because of that. I also really appreciated that they were older (by the standards of the era); it gets boring to constantly read about twenty-somethings.

4 stars. I would have rated this more highly except that I think if authors are going to sell a set of books as separate novels, they should really be stand-alones.

Note: I adhere to the ratings system as laid out by Goodreads: 2 stars = it was okay; 3 stars = liked it; 4 stars = really liked it; 5 stars = it was amazing. I gave this book 4 stars because I liked both MCs and the descriptions of pre-modern life. I do not think that every book I read is "amazing;" further, I think that it cheapens the rating system to always assign 4 or 5 stars. If a book really earns the 4 or 5 stars (and I realize that this is, to some degree, subjective), I'll give them -- but it certainly shouldn't apply to every book. YMMV, and everyone should enjoy/rate these books as they wish.

Additional Note: I did not receive this book as an ARC; I'm not another author who hosts or is hosted by other authors in this genre on our websites; and I'm not friends with the authors IRL, "friends" on this site, or friends on any social media site.

Check it out Brandr, Graeme: you can marry someone without seeking to control them. You can have sex with someone and not hurt them. What a revelation!

Magnus is more similar to Ragnar than the other books so far. It's not quite as emotional though, even though it deals with a heavy theme: rape. I'd say "trigger warning" but most of us know of vikings by reputation. If you really need such a warning, you probably wouldn't be reading this series at all. In any case, the attempts that take place are examined in a decidedly progressive manner and there is no victim blaming unless you count .

I liked reading about Modwen's weaving and dyeing. It seemed as though the author had made the effort to research and insert some historical details and I thoroughly approve. I also liked how much value this story places on gentleness. Again, fuck you Brandr and Graeme!

I would warn readers, though, that they should look at Magnus as romance, rather than erotica. There are only two sex scenes and one of them ends a little prematurely, shall we say. Personally, I rather liked this as - to be honest - it seemed realistic, given the length of time Magnus had been widowed. It annoys me that romance novels invariably portray sex as though it's always this magical event with fireworks going off, toes curling, eyes rolling back and everyone having orgasms at the same time. In real life, it can be complex and sometimes underwhelming. I welcome the hint of realism, but I appreciate that if you're just looking for erotica, you probably won't.

The Viking Surrender anthology has some wonderful stories in it, but I liked Magnus the best. This novella covers the story of Magnus who is an older, experienced and sad warrior in the Viking band that raids the village. Due to prior raids by neighboring villages, there are mainly women and children left. The Vikings are in search of treasures but when the women propose that they should stay and help them cultivate their rich lands and take over where their late husbands left off, the men start to see the advantages. Magnus is a widower himself who loved his wife and is not really looking for a new wife. He takes over the blacksmith shop and makes himself busy making tools and weapons. He ignores the widow that he had to marry under the arrangement. He has no desire to replace his wife. I loved that Magnus was very realistic and gave the reader a real feeling for the hard times and customs of the people. The romance is sweet and steamy at the same time.

Life at this time was described very well in this book. The day to day life, the enemies, the food and the work that was undertaken, the laws of the land, all set the scene for the story. Magnus, is a brave man, but has only remarried our of duty to his jarl. Modwen, a widow with two children, is his new wife. However Magnus finds it difficult to come to terms with having a wife. There is a villain that tries to upset this shaky marriage. An entertaining read. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Loving Viking!
This is a story filled with fiery passion and a love born in emotional and physical pain.
To begin with, Magnus takes a wife as this is what his leader has ordained, but she will be a wife in name only as he is haunted by the memory of his first wife who died a horrible death when he wasn't around to protect her.
It is also a second marriage for Modwen and she cannot understand why Magnus avoids her.
Being a romance story, you will be relieved to know that they do find their way around each other and do fall passionately in love.
Oh my goodness! What a story!
The narration is very interesting in that there are two narrators, one a male (James Magnum) and the other is a female (Violet Knight) and both with interesting and fitting accents which enhance the reading.
I loved all of it and more this time around than when I read the ebook last year. There is just something about a good narration that just makes the story come alive.
Definitely not one to be missed!
I was gifted a copy of the audiobook and my voluntary review above is based on my own thoughts and is unbiased.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the references to the culture and how the heroine fit into that really great. I wish the language barrier would have been addressed a little more, but the book was otherwise a fantastic read/listen. The audiobook has 2 narrators who really brought the characters to life.

Magnus: a Viking Warrior Romance
Viking Surrender Series #5
Emmanuelle de Maupassant
https://www.facebook.com/erotiquemuse/
Release date 10/29/2019

Blurb :

Tortured by brutal memories of his wife’s murder yet commanded to wed.
Valiant warrior Magnus finds unexpected passion in his new bride’s arms, but can Modwen’s love heal the wounds of his battle-scarred heart—or will another’s jealousy destroy them both?

'Magnus' is one of nine powerfully seductive romances in the 'Viking Surrender' series.

Begin the journey here...

Enter a world of suspense, seduction, and adventure, told against the forbidding backdrop of medieval Scotland. Journey together with indomitable heroes and intrepid heroines, as they discover that the raging storms of fear and passion can transform into enduring devotion.

My review :
Will a man still longing for what he has lost, be able to see his future lays on someone new’s hands...

I feared at first as I haven’t read any book in this series I might be lost, why I wondered if it was right to review it, if it would affect my rating but I so loved Mrs Emmanuelle de Maupassant’s novella in the amazing Once Upon A Christmas Wedding anthology, I decided to not let pass this short read.
And hopefully I did.
Firstly, to not get lost, I had to download the prologue which is free on amazon :
Vikings : Prologue (Viking Surrender Book 1)
Link : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z7BBGGM/...
After it is up to any reader to decide which tale to read.

Magnus still bears so much guilt for his late wife’s death, he was never really able to let her go.
Why he is angry to have to marry again and while following his Jarl’s orders, he will have nothing to do with this bride he was coerced to take.
Yet, she reawakens desires he thought buried with his first wife. And he will have to face a near failing to realize his new wife needs him much more than the one in the ground.
Modwen has accepted her village’s demand, and she will be a good spouse, if only her new husband would return the favor.
Whatever she does, he avoids her, evading her presence.
But when danger lurks in the corner, will he be the protector he is meant to be?
The heroes in this novella are awesome characters, they must do with what life throws on their path, but when Magnus lives with anger and regrets in his heart, Modwen has hope, hope for a better life.
And like many stubborn persons, it will be by smashing his skull to bits, that Magnus will be able to see what was in front of him all along.
A lovely tale of optimism with such a moving epilogue.
5 stars

If you have read the series Vikings, you have meet our guilt ridden Magnus.

The Vikings have taken over the village of Achnaryrie, after there raid, they were asked to stay and rebuild the village as all the men were mostly killed by the surrendering villages. Each Viking was asked to pick a woman to marry, here we get to meet the really torn Magnus, and man who’s wife was killed years ago but he cannot get rid of the guilt surrounding the loss of her and the violent way she was murdered.

Modwen is his wife who also had lost her husband in one of the raids from the other villages.
In the days of Vikings, women looked after there husband saw to all there needs, food, clothing and his comfort in the marriage bed, which Magnus was having nothing to do with.

Magnus is hurting, as now he feels he has let his late wife down, by marrying again, the emotional journey he is taken on, heart tearing one way then another and his wife’s uncle to her late husband will not leave Modwen alone, which causes so much buildup tension in Magnus who cannot understand why he feels this way.

Every thing comes to a head when Fecir is killed. Magnus steps up and takes the blame.

The rest they say is history but no it turns in to real life love, the second time around, wonderful joyous ending.

Courage going forward is nearly always reward.

Highly recommend

Stand alone

I think the author may be a bit disappointed in my review of this book, but I hope not. I read the prologue and have, I think, all of the stories now loaded on my Kindle. But because I'd signed up for an ARC of Magnus from Booksprout, as well as having purchased it, I thought I'd start with this, a story of something far more important than Vikings.

While I was reading this story, I was touched by how little I saw this as a story of Vikings, and how much I saw it as a story of forgiveness of the past and oneself; a story of the joy and wonder of celebrating the present and the future. I loved reading as the characters discovered that for themselves.

Magnus is a widower in the book, as is his wife to be, Modwen. While Modwen is accepting of whatever is sent her way, Magnus is quite willing to fight to remember and wants to live in the past. He's become comfortable there. This is a story of how a strong woman convinces a man that the future is much more interesting than the past.

Yep, there's steam in this book. Well, what did you expect? Did you read the list of authors? This book has plenty enough steam to keep you interested, but there's a lot of by-play between these characters. That byplay alone makes this book worth reading.

Kudos to this author, who is very adept at writing historical romance. But more importantly, she does so with a strong insight into the human mind and soul.

When a group of Vikings seek shelter on the coast of Scotland they find a village that is struggling to survive. Most of the men have been killed or wounded from attacks by neighbouring tribes. The Vikings decide that some of their men will stay, marry some of the women & help restore the village. Magnus is a blacksmith & weds Modwen widow of the village’s blacksmith. Magnus is still tortured by brutal memories of his wife’s murder & struggles to move forward.
A well written very well paced book that I read in one sitting. The characters have depth & most are very likeable. Magnus & Modwen struggle with their marriage but as time passes they both begin to move forward. Magnus is forced to reassess his feelings & actions when Modwen is threatened & it’s a turning point in their relationship. Whilst the Vikings could be ruthless the story also showed a different side with their strict laws & loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed rereading this lovely story & the epilogue rounded the story beautifully
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Oooooooooh!!! I looooooved Magnus and Modwen. I felt that Emmanuelle de Maupassant poured so much angst and feeling into this novella. Magnus was the perfectly moody broody hero... and Modwen was totally what he needed to heal his heart. I was a little worried because they didn’t have that much words exchange between them, but it all worked out.

This was fantastic when I read it the first time as part of the Vikings anthology. But I fell in love with the story AGAIN when I re-read it separately. That bonus epilogue had me freaken bawling!! Honestly, Magnus and Modwen gave me all the wonderful feels. This novella has my heart, y’all!! Loved it!!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout. I voluntarily reviewed it and the comments are my own.

5 stars: Ugly cried AF... major book hangover... characters were amazing... made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!

The best way to recommend this book is to tell you that this author knows her craft. She has obviously studied the era and way of life of the people. Her scenes are so well described that you can easily picture an accurate vision. But best, and crucial to this story, is her ability to delve into the emotions and motives of the characters. Bad folks are not always bad, good not always good because circumstances mold and change us all. Being able to understand motives makes for a tale of real depth and truth that you will enjoy. A "do not miss" for fans of the Viking genre.

This is Magnus and Modwen...as only EMMANUELLE DE MAUPASSANT can tell you in her writing.

I like this story very much as it takes you into each mans story and how he becomes part of the new life that awaits with the VIKINGS!
Excellent detail and thought into the main characters and secondary characters the play part of the whole picture of new life in this village blending Norse custom and the new religion of Christianity.

Nicely done!

I had recieved this as an ARC but life's tribulation and my being ill got in the way .

LOVE those Vikings! Magnus: Viking Surrender by Emmanuelle de Maupassant is a story of lost love, letting go and then opening up your heart for a second chance. Magnus and Modwen are believable and easy to relate to, from the first page and throughout I was totally captivated. This is a sweet story, of a second chance at love. Magnus feels guilt about his attraction to Modwen, when he is still grieving the loss of his first wife. He realises what he is missing out on when Modwen is attacked by her first husband’s uncle. In this story, they must learn to love again.

Fantastic Story & Listen🎧 Captivating & Heartfelt!

Magnus
A Viking Warrior Romance: Viking Surrender, Book 5
By: Emmanuelle de Maupassant
Narrated by: James Magnum, Violet Knight

This is a fantastic story, it is a well written, well told historical romance. It place around the year 912 AD and is set in Scotland. The book is part of the Viking Surrender Series, while the story stands on its own, I do recommend reading and/or listening to “Vikings” the first book in the series. It is the prologue to the series and shows how and why the Vikings take root in Achnaryrie Village. It gives a better understanding to the characters relationship. Emmanuelle de Maupassant’s contribution to the series is a great one, this is Magnus and Modwen’s story and what a story it is. Magnus never got over the brutal death of his wife, he blames himself for not protecting her from the savages that attacked her. He is not happy about his new situation, a marriage coming out of a deal made by his leader. He is a husband in name only to the widow of the towns forger. Modwen lost her husband and accepts the deal made to bring men in to help bring their once flourishing town back to its glory. She now has a new husband, in name only since he wants nothing to do with her. Magnus must let go of his guilt and rid the inner demons that haunt him. I loved how everything plays out in this book, it is well plotted and there is never a dull moment with plenty of drama, angst, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt ones and slow burn romance.

I listened to the Audible edition, James Magnum and Violet Knight are terrific narrators and voice artists. They bring the characters to life, give each their own voice and personality. They did a great job portraying the characters, humanizing them with their emotions and passion. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen🎧

I received this book as a ARC copy for an honest opinion of what I thought of it! Magnus and Modwon story is the fifth in the series, I received it as a audio book, the first thing I loved was it had two narrative people reading the story. A man for Magnus and a woman for Modwon, and it gave their story an added benefit, the time period is in the Medieval world of Scotland, Magnus and his fellow Vikings attack Modwon village, and it was decided the men would stay there and defend the women, and the men and women should get married. Modwon was selected for Magnus, but he was grieving for his first wife who was brutally murdered and didn't want to marry anyone! This author writes a excellent book, that gets a person hooked from the start to the finish of her books! You can see Magnus trying not to fall in love with Modwon, and she trys so hard to be a wife to him. This book holds how savage the Vikings could be,steamy love scenes, which were very well done, action packed with the people in the story. I would recommend you to buy this book, I enjoyed listening to the audio of a well written book. Thanks for letting me share my opinion. Gave it a five stars.

An Excellent Viking Tale

Emmanuelle de Maupassant is a superb storyteller. She really knows how to use language to evoke the Viking era and create a really powerful atmosphere in her books. She uses subtle observations and beautiful words to bring her world to life.

Magnus and Modwen are separately widowed and required to enter into an arranged marriage together. They both are reticent to start with, but gradually over time their situation becomes something more.

This book has sensuality, and love, and some jeopardy within it, and overall I felt an immediate connection with, and liking of the two main characters.

Magnus is a complete standalone story from the Viking Surrender series. I highly recommend it to lovers of Viking and historical romance books.

This is my first time listening/reading a book by this author and I really enjoyed this short, steamy, and thrilling Viking romance. At first it was bit confusing because the names and places were a bit hard to understand but I as the story went on I was pulled in and needed to know what would happen between Magnus and Modwen. They were able to overcome obstacles and Magnus realized Modwen was second chance at love. The narrators did a great job bringing this story to life. I thought James Magnum was the perfect Magnus, with his deep growly voice, definitely sounded like a Viking warrior.

I found myself getting a little bored, which is think is a problem more to do with the overall format of this series than the individual author - each book takes place in a tiny tiny village and all take place at the same time - so with each successive book we the reader have to read about the the same events over and over again... by book 5 I don't want to read about the raids on neighbouring villages from a slightly different perspective, or how that that one guy got ambushed, or that this one chick has been put in chains... I know! I've read it before... 4 times before...

Add to that I didn't click with this main couple. I mean they were fiiiiine, just that, fine.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.

Vikings have taken a town, and married the women within.
The widow of the former blacksmith, found herself married again, to a Viking warrior, who obviously could also work the forge.
However, all was not what one would have expected and the lack of language skills did nothing to assist.
How do these two strangers learn to live together and love each other, is a somewhat beautiful tale, which will entrance a reader who enjoys historical and romantic love stories combined.

Breaking through the sorrow
This story is book 5 in the Viking Surrenders series.
It can be read alone but it is so much better if each book is read in order as the stories and characters intermingle along the way.
A broken man unable to move on from his wife’s passing must learn to take on a new life with a woman and her children he did not want.
This story follows Magnus and Modwen’s journey to finding peace, understanding and eventually love with a few steamy scenes throughout.
I absolutely loved it and really enjoyed the narration.

While I have read this book quite some time ago I had neglected to write a review. That’s not because I didn’t love this book or that I didn’t finish it, but because of personal reasons. So sorry that I couldn’t rate it sooner.
I highly recommend reading this!
Magnus and Modwen learn that they have to be true to themselves and not hold onto the past for too long, even when it is or was heartbreaking. That’s a lesson for all times.

Miserable Magnus

Magnus lost his wife when Berserkers murdered her. He can't get over the pain and feelings of guilt. When forced to marry, he decides he won't be anything more than a provider. She's willing to give herself to him but he's not interested. At least for a while.

As he develops feelings for her and her children he fights them. He doesn't think he deserves happiness but she deserves his protection. And he's going to give it to her even if it kills him.
