Back in the Game

Rate this book
Single dad and hockey star, Calder Weiss has put his love life on the back burner for the past five years, raising his daughter and keeping up with the demands of his profession.

But all that changes the minute Rachel Perry runs into him in the most unlikely of places, right outside the men's bathroom. Vibrant and enchanting, she captures his attention, making it impossible for him to walk away without scoring her number.

Their connection is immediate, their attraction palpable, and their relationship undeniable. But Rachel isn't the only girl in Calder's life which scares him, because Calder's daughter already lost her mother. He doesn't want Shea to lose someone close to her again, making Rachel's task of breaking through Calder's wall that much more difficult.

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn't take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn't until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven't turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children.

Damn these books, I absolutely love them and hate them at the same time.... They are so freakin good and then bam, it’s over already 😩

Calder, sexy ass hockey player, single dad, kind, sweet, and has his priories straight. Until he runs into Rachel and he starts to see that maybe, just maybe he needs more in his life, that he’s missing a huge factor, Love. But is he ready to combine his career and dad life with his knew found love??

I loved this novella, super sweet, super short, and oh my god I can’t wait to get Hayden’s story in One Baby Daddy. I so enjoy this author

“You’re someone I can get lost in, easily, without even trying.”

Back in the Game is a quick, sweet, and sexy novella about hockey player and single dad, Calder Weiss and teacher, Rachel Perry.

Calder plays on the same NHL team and is friends with Hayden (if you've read the Dating by Numbers series, you know him) and stays away from dating. He has a 5 year old daughter who's mother abandoned her and he doesn't want her to get hurt by meeting a woman who will leave like her mom. When he meets Rachel, he's enamored. He's had no desire to date in the longest time, but Rachel is someone who changes his mind.

I enjoyed Rachel and Calder's relationships. I loved their texts and cute banner. Honestly, I think this would have been better as a full novel. There was so much more that could have came from their story and the ending was so rushed, I wanted more! Overall, I did enjoy the audio book and recommend if you're looking for a quick listen!!

This was insta and cute! And, we actually see the older brother of Halsey Holmes (He’s Not My Type which just came out last week) make an appearance (Hayden). I love when characters from other books I’ve read interconnect 🥰 lol (while not affecting the standalone status).

Calder’s a single father to a five-year-old daughter. His baby mama decided she didn’t care to be in her daughter’s life so he took on the role by himself. Although hockey keeps them extremely busy, he still takes the time to make sure he’s doing the best that he can with his kid.

Dressed as a fairy, he comes out of the restroom when Rachel bumps into him 😅. Cue insta-everything 👀. he asked her out of the date and she promptly says yes.

What I liked:
—the audiobook’s duet narration while texting 👀. It’s my kryptonite 🥰

—all the times they texted while he was away 🥰

—being “pregnant” to hide contraband candy in the movie theater 🤣. Now I gotta try it 👀

—old-school dating 🫶. Reminds me of my younger days 😉

—the one 🔥 scene. It was 🥵

—improvising while he was away 😉🔥

—he calls her baby and beautiful 🔥

What I wanted more of:
—some reciprocity when it comes to 👄. I like me a selfless hero 🤷🏻‍♀️

—we only see his daughter at the very end of the book. I wish we would’ve seen more of her.

—more 🔥

— it ends abruptly; no proper epilogue. I would call this more of an HFN.

Overall, I enjoyed this ❤️

⚠️safety squad⚠️
-no cheating/sharing/owd/omd
-condom/it’s been a few months since he’s been with anyone/no info on her last time
-HFN/no epilogue

What happens when sexy, single dad bitch slaps a woman with his fairy wings? Well, true love of course-duh!

Calder was amazing. He is a tough as nails, sexy hockey player who wears fairy wings, tiaras, and has tea parties with his little girl. Ovary popping stuff here. Raising his daughter (the result on a one night stand) alone after her mother left her, he spends as much time as he can with her. He was charming and a gentleman. Definitely wasn't portrayed as a manwhore.

Rachel, could potentially be one of my favorite heroines. She was loving, witty and didn't play games. She had no clue that Calder was a professional hockey player when they met. She truly fell in love with him for the right reasons.
- no cheating
- no ow/om drama whatsoever
- laugh out loud
-some steam
-safe- neither are with others after they meet
- no violence of any nature
- just ok epilogue - it was cute but needed a further look into their future

Cute and steamy single dad romance. BUT, romances that are fewer than 100 pages shouldn’t have a third act conflict. I said what I said.

3.5 'Butterfly Kisses' Stars.

Such a sweet, fun loving, adorable read & in my humble opinion far too short.

Calder Weiss, hockey player and full time Dad hasn’t dated since his daughter Shea was born. I think there might have been one or two hook ups, but nothing was ever mentioned.

Seriously catnip peeps a daddy and his daughter. His name is Wanda, he was a tiara with jewels as well as a wand. Now, now peeps get your mind out of the gutter.

While out playing fairy Wanda at Noodles & Donuts be bumps into someone who he would date so he wants back in the game.

Calder is somewhat rusty, but he is a real gem, one of the good guys. Sweet, sensitive and an animal in bed. He is caring, and he deserved another chance at love.

Rachel got b$tch slapped by a fairy wing and her life will never be the same again. As she is a school teacher she knows all about dealing with five-year old’s.

These two really hit it off, emotionally as well as chemistry wise. Their banter is hilarious and Calder’s dating skills are pretty old school. Trying to come up with a date idea isn’t that easy so texting it is.

Calder: Thoughts on laser tag?
Rachel: Thoughts on spending Friday night alone?
Calder: Noted.

Another one of those laugh out loud moments.

Rachel: Oh okay then. Good morning prickly penis.
Calder: Prickly penis? Uh, how is that a term of endearment?
Rachel: I have no idea, it’s a legit the first thing that came to mind.

With all romances there must be some angst which is completely minor in this case, but Ms. Quinn has written something adorable with great characters although it is far too short for my liking.

This book had so much promise—I was really getting into it and enjoying it. But it was over before you knew it! There was so much more the author could have developed with this couple. The meeting between the kindergarten teacher heroine (Rachel) and the hockey player hero’s (Calder) young daughter (Shea) was hardly touched on. While I greatly enjoyed what I read, I thought it would’ve worked so much better as a full length novel.

One of the sweetest books I’ve ever read. Both characters were just sickeningly cute. Even the kid. Usually I don’t like the single dad trope but this one was 🍭🧁🍫🧁🍬. I love books with dual pov.

The h was just so straightforward I loved it.

“And that right there.” She pokes my cheek. “The way you blush, it’s hot. You’re this confident, attractive man, but you can blush as red as a tomato in seconds. Some women like a cocky son of a bitch, not me, I like my men sensitive, sweet, and animals in bed. I know the first two are true, waiting to find out about the third.” She wiggles her eyebrows.

I want a man like Caulder. This line gave me the feels 💥✨

“Not only do I want a woman to want me, but I want her to crave me, to want to breath the same air as me.”
“You want them obsessed?”
He nods. “I want to consume them so I’m the only thing they can ever think about.”
“That’s pretty cocky of you, isn’t it?”
He shakes his head. “No, because I know when I’m with someone who I really like, someone who makes me laugh and smile, and someone who challenges me . . . someone like you, I will feel that exact way about them. I’ll be consumed by their scent, by their smile, by the way they gently take my hand in theirs. I’ll crave to hear their voice, to make them laugh, to catch a quick glance in my direction. They will be the only person I think about, the only person I want to hear talk on the phone, and the only person I want to see at night.”

Big smiles, lots of laughs and some intense hand fanning. This is what happens when you open up a deliciously lighthearted novella you can read over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

Meghan Quinn delivers a story with the perfect blend of humor and sexiness in which single dad and NHL star Calder Weiss, had put his love life on hold since his five year old daughter was born. His hiatus is left behind when he meets sassy school teacher outside a restroom… while he’s dressed as Wanda the fairy princess… with wings, tiara and all!

What ensues next is a series of cute and fun texts, a bit of nervousness before the first date and lots of heartwarming feels for the adorable couple as they get to know each other.
Calder: Thoughts on laser tag?
Rachel: Thoughts on spending Friday night alone?
~ Text between Calder and Rachel on first date ideas

Both Calder and Rachel are charming and likeable, but I absolutely fell for the strong, swoon worthy hockey player who’d give anything for his daughter’s happiness but also wants love and companionship of his own even though he’s a bit uneasy getting back in the game.

I was fascinated by the banter between him and Rachel and also enjoyed the easy camaraderie between Calder and his best friend Hayden who I can’t wait to know more of.

Even though it’s short, or because it was, I completely escaped from everything around me and just enjoyed this fun and sweet read.

Back in the Game is a hockey novella by Meghan Quinn. It is a standalone romantic comedy told by both points of view with a happy ending.

I had the pleasure of reading Back In The Game when it was part of the anthology, Team Player. And I enjoyed is just as much the second time around as I did the first time I read it.

This was very quick, sweet and funny read. I am not fan of insta-love, but again, when written properly, I can look past that and enjoy the book and get caught up in the magic - and that was the case with this book.

Calder is hockey player and a single dad. His daughter is his world and his dedication to her is amazing. That alone won me over.

Rachel was a hoot. She's a school teacher and her personality fits that. She's a bubbly woman who takes things in strides.

The camaraderie between Calder and Rachel is what made this story so easy to enjoy and love. Meghan has this knack for making her characters so real and relatable. Not only did these two have a great chemistry, but their banter was great. And I have to say is text messages - these were a perfect addition to this story.

If you have never read Meghan's books before (what rock are you hiding under??!), this will be the perfect book to see her funny side of writing.

If you have read Meghan before, you will love this book just as much as her others.

Once again, Meghan does it! She brings a smile to my face, a big laugh to my belly, and all those warm and gooey feelings one hopes for when reading a romance. This is a must read for all fans of Meghan Quinn, and for those who are looking for a smart and lighthearted read.

If you are familiar and/or have read the Team Player Anthology, then you already know that this book was in that anthology. Out of all the books included in it, this was my absolute FAVORITE. I think it's because Meghan not only included a single dad (my absolute favorite trope) but added some sports in it as well. If you HAVEN'T read that anthology then I would definitely recommend grabbing a copy of this one. It's only $0.99 and FREE with a kindle unlimited subscription.

I had a chance to read this short story from the Team Player anthology.
Calder is a hot hockey player/single dad who adores his little daughter Shea. The man would do anything to put a smile on her face … including dress up as “Wanda” in public. Totally pulled my heartstrings with this one – SWOONS.
Rachel is a school teacher. I love her personality - sweet, funny, caring, loves KIDS <3
When the two first met, Calder was Wanda … Rachel was immediately intrigued by his wings and halo. They struck up a conversation and the rest is history. I would say the chemistry was instant. Calder has been out of practice with dating for a while so he was a bit nervous putting his heart out there again. Calder was also very protective of Shea. Calder does not want to get involved too quickly, fearing his daughter might get hurt if the relationship fails. I LOVE the guy for this alone!!! Can Calder open up and take a chance at love?
For a short story, this book has all the goodies – humor, passion, chemistry and romance. I love that Calder and Rachel are relatable characters – someone you would have been friends with. They’ve got some hilarious and witty banters going on. Over all, this was a short & sweet, heart-warming read.

Hands down Clader was a sweet gentleman who loves his kid.. heck he dressed up like a fairy for her and met Rachel dress in it!! He also kinda slapped her on accident with his wings 🤣🤣🤣
Great first meeting lol

Now the connection between the two was cute and i enjoyed the banter and sassyness whenever they would text. But sometimes it was tooo extreme for my taste...

Few ehh was no epilogue.. and well the daughter really wasn't in it until the end so it was hard for me to picture him as a single parent... not even dad/daughter solo time i was surprised about that.. and it was wrapped up with a cute ending..

No ow/om drama, no cheating, slight secondary chara, tiny sexy times,  no virgins no manwhore but last chick was few months ago

Recommend- maybe

“You’re someone I can get lost in, easily, without even trying.”

So sweet, so funny, so charming! It has EVERYTHING I’ve come to absolutely ADORE in a Meghan Quinn romance! These characters were so fun and so entertaining, I couldn’t look away. I’m such a sucker for a single dad romance, and BACK IN THE GAME was just perfect for me! Calder Weiss and Rachel Perry were so great together. The banter, the chemistry, the playfulness and their personalities just melded perfectly. I can ALWAYS count on love stories, like the ones that Ms. Quinn produces, to fill my heart to the point of bursting and to leave me in such a blissful state, with a HUGE smile on my face. There’s just nothing better!

I'm a sucker for single dads and ROM-COMs so this one was right up my alley. Calder was a hockey player who was such a dedicated father. He and Rachel have instant chemistry at their first meeting. I found these characters both quite quirky. Their banter via text as well as in person was definitely hilarious. At times however, I found their interaction a bit too over the top and a bit too corny. It was a fun read though. In true Meghan Quinn fashion there was a nice balance of humor and steamy scenes.

The ending ruined this book for me. At 85% on my kindle and the issue of Rachel not being introduced to Calder's daughter, I thought this would be the test to the relationship. Maybe a little drama because his daughter doesn't want to share. Instead, we got a quickly tied up ending with a HEA. A little too neat and tidy for me, especially when all this played out in about 2 pages and then the book was done.

Over the top sarcasm with NO story line. Sorry meghan Quinn but this fell flat; real flat.
I have no idea where all the 2,3,4,5 stars came from. Please tell me b/c maybe I missed something.

The one star was given b/c it started off great. How they met was awesome and the sarcasm started there. I love sarcasm but this became annoying sarcasm. This wasn't the fun bantering, push pull attitude.. This was like i can't carry on a conversation so everything is sarcastic..
Reading it page after page, after page, it gets old and annoying.

Most of the sarcasm were through text. I still don't get why she text him first. Why was that? Anyway, it seemed like most of the conversations were through texting and not in person.

See how i have dwelled so much on sarcasm b/c really that is all it was.. Sarcastic conversation with no story line. I can't even remember what they "talked" about b/c there really was no REAL conversation. The author tried to throw in the whole single dad thing but really that was nothing. If you took all the sarcasm out. you may could get a chapter with him and his daughter.

I really didn't want to finish it but i pushed through b/c I am at a work function and really couldn't start anything to serious. I got lucky!!!! the book ended at 82% and I am warning you the ending was stupid. Really that is how it ended? why?

Anyway, if you like book with no story line and every word being sarcastic. This is for you.

I don't recommend

For those that did read it, Why all the high ratings. What did I miss that made it so good?
