I appear to have got these backwards, I didn't realise this was the 2nd in a series.
Although I am sure this is aimed at a much younger audience than me, but I quite liked it.
Megan is going to visit her best friend Alice. Alice has moved away with her little brother Jamie after her Mum (Veronica) and her Dad separated. They are all looking forward to 6 days of having fun together. Only Alice has overheard her Mum on the phone to Norman, decided her Mum must have a new boyfriend and sets out on a sabotage mission to "save her family".
On one side, I can see how hard it must be to have your family fall apart, to move away from your friends and to start a new life somewhere else, and also how easy it must be to hold your Mum entirely accountable for it all. But I kind of ended up feeling sorry for Megan for being stuck in the middle of it all, sorry for Veronica for not being allowed to have any sort of life outside of being "Mum" and sorry for Jamie for being too little to understand how much of a monster sugar turns him into. But it's hard to find a lot of sympathy for Alice when she is such a brat even when you remind yourself that she's 12 and miserable, although you do have to admire her audacity.
I really liked how the book ended, I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I look forward to reading more books by this author with the kids in the future.
Alice and Megan are back in book two of the series with this time plotting to cause mayhem for a parent trying to form a new relationship. This is a sure pointer to better communication in families and relationships being needed and the ideals of youth not understanding the complexities of relationships and the need for someone to be with. It does bring up some interesting discussion points, although I would have liked a few more ragged edges to go with real life.
Megan is looking forward to visiting her best friend Alice in Dublin. She's hoping for a nice, trouble-free holiday - cinemas, shopping and just hanging out. No such luck! Alice informs Megan that her mum has a new boyfriend. She's determined to discover who he is and get rid of him! But how? By being the most horrible girl he's ever seen! Just how bad can Alice be? And can Megan stand it? This is another fun-filled adventure with the girls from Alice next door.
