Philip the Arab returns to Rome, covered in glory. He spends rivers of gold planning the spectacle in celebration of the thousandth anniversary of the founding of Rome. But the usurper emperor is not the only one planning. On the plains north of the Danube, the tribes hatch plans of their own. The Goths consolidate their power, while the Roxolani seek new allies. Lucius and his companions are forced to journey to Rome. To keep his oaths, he enters the dark world of the men who fight to honour the gods. But Philip the Arab is not having everything his own way. The legions are disillusioned and rise up in revolt. The Scythians and the Goths gather their allies and pour across the borders. Will Lucius be able to save the life of his mentor, the king of the Roxolani? Will he finally avenge the murder of his father?
Hector is a freedman. In 2016 he managed to escape from the corporate world, in which he played the part of a detribalised Chartered Accountant.
Nowadays he hides away in the Garden Route of South Africa with his wife and two daughters. He is addicted to reading historical novels and his hobbies include hiking, wine and sustaining niggling injuries on the tennis court.
The series continues with Lucius hell bent on seeking revenge on Philip the Arab, Emperor of Rome who had his father killed and has captured his brother in arms/brother in law holding him as a slave to be sacrificed at Romes thousand year celebrations. Will Lucius save his friend, will Arash show him the way? I love the humour of Hostilius, the old Centurion but don't call him that to his face. Sit back and enjoy this next installment.
Great action, great history, enticing plot. I'm five books in and now I am a Miller fan. I love how the main character is bad ass but not invincible. On to the next book!
The story unfolds with a good story arc books are not getting repetitive. And characters are growing though the development is about what you would expect in this action genre.
I love historical fiction when it is based on the reality of the day in which it is set. The research underpinning these books is evident in the way the story shows the events at the human, individual level. I learn so much from writers like Hector Miller it feels like cheating because this is not "real history,"as contained in a pedantic, scholarly tome. Well, real history is the story of the people who lived it. The peoples become real through these tellings, and leads one on to more study to satiate the desire to know more about the world and cultures introduced here. Is there any higher praise than a reader wanting to read further afield after encountering these stories? Well done, keep writing!
Action, well developed beloved characters & real history combined to make a great read in the series. Excellent presentation of the history of this period of Roman rule. As usual Miller has givn us a truly well researched tale with a twist in that instead of following the large unit formations and battles we follow Eochar a.k.a. Domitius, in his personal battle against his personal enemies.
I was waiting for this book since I finished reading the previous one, and it was all I expected it to be and even more. I am in awe of the story that Mr Miller is weaving, he is bringing Roman history to life like never before and has me rooting for the so-called barbarians even more than for the Romans.
This is a different sort of book to the others, the focus is not on big battles and army tactics but on personal attacks and assassination.
It is straightforward in many ways given Lucius' martial prowess but there are a few twists and turns and near misses thrown in to keep the plot going.
The pace is a little slow but the ending is decent.
I am enjoying the path of Eochus and his contemporaries. And Miller's research into the period to provide a plausible, if not likely story line. It has developed a feel similar to Cornwell's Last Kingdom series. I shall continue to follow as Miller reveals all...
Nice read. At times i had re-read some sections when history becomes confusing. Mr. Millrr worked hard at keeping events historicall sccurate as peryains to what is knpwn.
Even though most events are predictable as the hero is one of those I am better than everyone types, the reading is very enjoyable and the history behind very insightful.
Took a leap of faith when I read first book, but I am glad I did. The author has a good writing style that entertains and educates . I look forward to reading more about this time frame in history, as the characters continue to develop.
I started a couple of weeks ago and now just finished this book. The band of characters are fleshed out nicely by the author. I am looking forward to finishing this volume and going on to next.
As I am doing this review on my kindle, I shall not be long winded in the review. To be concise, you'll care about each character. Good authors see to it.
Love this series! It has taught me so much about the different tribes that I did not know. Anxiously waiting for the next book! I have learned much. Thank you Hector Miller. Great writing!
