Bolt thinks he's a super-dog, but he just plays one on TV. When he finds himself on the other side of the country, he knows he's got to get home fast. Along the way, he meets a sassy, street-smart cat named Mittens and his biggest fan, a hamster named Rhino. Mittens can't believe she's stuck with a dog who thinks he has laser vision. And Rhino can't believe he got so lucky. This action-packed journey features hilarious narration by all three characters and exuberant, engaging illustrations by one of the film's story artists.
A retelling of the adventures of Bolt, and friends. As Penny's presence has almost completely been removed, so too have the conflicts they face. Similar to how it was done in the movie, Mittens contradicts everything Bolt believes with the cold hard truth. To do this effectively, they are shown on facing pages or in different panels stating their opinions. Rhino's interjections are also added to this mix. Due to this format, perspectives change frequently, and if not for the clearly defined background colours and space separating each, children would find it difficult to follow. On top of this is the fact that they speak in rhyme. Rather than using the animated style of the movie, a painterly style is chosen to keep the works distinct. If you are looking for a short summary of events, this book will do, otherwise the movie is more worth your time.
This book is a retelling by Bolt and Mittens about their crazy adventure to save Penny. Of course Bolt exaggerates his powers, and Mittens tries to tell you the real story. The characters, including Rhino, come to realize that they wouldn't have been able to save the day without each other.
The illustrations are not Disney illustrations. They're a little more... "abstract"? I'm not really sure how to describe it. But I enjoyed them. They were close enough to the real characters that you could tell. It was just a different style. I thought the voices of the characters were pretty true to the characters from the movie.
It had a lot of pages but didn't have too many words. It also rhymed, which I wasn't expecting. That always makes the reading go a little bit faster.
I enjoyed this book. I love getting books on Disney movies or shows to see how they capture the story - what events they think are important to keep and what they leave out. I enjoyed this one. If you liked the movie, Bolt, I think you'd enjoy this book with your kids.
