Follow the adventures of Rembrandt, a young black and white tuxedo cat, as he helps other neighborhood animal friends.
Rembrandt, affectionately known as Remy, is well loved and lives with his Purr-ents and his big brother, Logan, the Tom Cat. In this inaugural story book of Rembrandt, the Tuxedo Cat, Remy comes upon an unfamiliar calico cat who has shyly seated herself on the bench in his backyard. A great mystery has presented itself with the quiet little calico cat. As Remy strikes up a conversation, the little calico cat has no meow. Remy and Callie, as he calls her, go on a quest to help her find her meow. They search his back yard and the woods behind his house. Will they find Callie's meow? And if so, where will they find it?
I wanted to love this book because I love cats!! I had several problems with this book. First off, the cats don't ACT like cats at all. It would have been better if the author would have studied cats and how they act with each other, etc to make it at least a bit realistic.
Second, I didn't think the illustrations were anything special. All the cats looked pretty much the same except for coloring. The backgrounds were too simple to be interesting.
I'm not sure what the message is in this book? Help a younger kitten (child?). get help from your parents when you get in a jam?
I just wasn't impressed with this book and wouldn't recommend it.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Rembrandt the cat meets a cat who doesn't meow. He decides to call her Callie. They play for a bit, but then Rembrandt decides they should go on an adventure to find her meow.
The illustrations are really cute, but some of the phrasing is awkward, and the story is a bit lacking. Rembrandt's brother Leo also doesn't meow, so it doesn't make sense why Rembrandt is determined to find Callie's meow but is not concerned about his brother's. I also fail to see what the lesson to be learned from this story is supposed to be.
Overall, the book was enjoyable and the pictures are beautiful.
I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Carpenter's Son Publishing of Clovercroft Publishing.
16/52 books read in 2021. 7/12 picture books read in 2021. Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Positives first. The illustrations are cute. I also really like the added element of the hummingbird, I can imagine that looking for this little bird on every page is a fun activity for the little ones.
On the flip side: Like many have said before me, I am not quite sure what the moral of this story is. Leave your friend alone in a scary situation so they have to speak to reach out to you when you know they have trouble communicating by speech? Try fixing your friend when you are fine with the same 'problems' when your brother has them?
So yeah, not sure if I would recommend this... Maybe a good idea to read through this in the store or loan it from the library before adding it to your child's nighttime routine.
An interesting story of Rembrandt the cat helping his new friend Callie find her "meow". Very repetitive and cute for younger children. I don't love that the Remi basically scares Callie into meowing, but that's not the way it's portrayed in the book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Carpenter's Son Publishing, Clovercroft Publishing for a free digital copy for my review.
I read this book with my three year old daughter today and she really enjoyed it.
I asked her what she thought about the book and she said it was good and she liked looking for the Hummingbirds on the different pages too.
The illustrations were cute and I thought that the story was a fun read, my daughter liked pointing out the things she knew too and got really involved.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended and looking forward to his next adventure!
This is my first children's book that I have picked up from Netgalley for a review. I thought it would be a nice way to get some books that my 10 month old son might like as well as a way to share my thoughts on the book with other parents (hopefully).
I chose this book for a few reasons, first its about a tuxedo cat. My family has 4 cats, none of which are a Tuxedo cat but I had one as I was growing up. Secondly, its about cats and we love cats. Thirdly, it had pictures which I thought would be nice for my son.
Rembrandt, if you haven't already deduced, is a tuxedo cat and while he is outside playing, he comes across Callie, a Callico cat. Callie and Rembrandt play together throughout the day while also looking for Callie's "meow" as she has never meowed before. Rembrandt also has an older brother who has never meowed.
I thought that the story moved slowly and was quite repetitive. Rembrandt and Callie look in seven different places for her "meow". I also found it difficult to figure out what the plot of the story was until I was 50% through the book. Given that it moves slowly and it is repetitive, I do wonder if a young child would be able to hold attention that long for the story to be completed. I think this book, depending on age, would need to be read in sections. At least, I know that is what I will probably do with my son when I eventually read it to him.
Their is an illustration on each page of the book. The illustrations are rough, but in a good way. They almost remind me of children's drawing. They are bright and colorful and not super detailed. It works well for this book.
Rating: 3 out of 5 because as I previously mentioned the story moved slowly and was quite repetitive. I do think that the number of places that Rembrandt and Callie looked for her "meow" could have been done a fewer number of places.
Rembrandt, or Remy, as he is called in this book is a curious and adventurous young cat who meets a beautiful Calico cat whom doesn't meow or purr who Remy quickly names Callie. Remy is reminded to himself that his own brother doesn't meow or purr and his purr-ents have told him that some cats just don't do either and that is okay. Remy and Callie play around for awhile and after a nap, Remy decides they should search for Callie's lost meow, hoping they will find it somewhere. They go to many areas and adventure around looking for Callie's meow which they do not seem to find. It is repetitive as they journey searching and not finding it, but it shows that even sometimes when searching for something important, you may not always find it right away. Eventually they end up with Callie stuck and in a predicament that sends Remy off to find his purr-ents for help. Only then they discover that Callie can meow, when she needs it most. The book is very colorful with fun illustrations. The story is fine, but I was not a fan of so many words on each page. My five year old found it easy enough to follow along, but the pages do seem cluttered with such bright illustrations and a bold and slightly obnoxious looking text (not a fan of the font) which filled up a lot of each page. I'm not sure that my three year old would stay attentive for this entire book because of this. My only major complaint is that Remy knows his own brother doesn't meow and it's ok, yet he feels the need to push his new friend into finding hers. She does, but only after being scared into finding it, which to me is a bit sad. I would like to read more of Remy's adventures though as the story was well told and for children who love cats, this is a cute book.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for granting me access to this title in exchange for an honest review.
The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat tells the story of Remy, a young tuxedo cat, who finds a silent calico who he dubs Callie. After making friends with Callie they go off in search of her "meow." It's a cute story about acceptance of people who don't communicate in exected ways and may be helpful for children who are excessively shy or selectively mute.
It felt like there's too much text per page for the reading level this is meant to be. Abbreviating the text or spreading it out over more pages would have fixed this issue. For group reading storytime, such as in a classroom setting, this would only be a teacher's personal preference issue. In paired/guided reading situations and independent reading situations, the amount of text per page may prove intimidating for young readers.
The illustrations are adorable! I must commend the author for making the calico character female, as this is pretty much always the case in reality due to colour instructions in cats being linked to the X-chromosome. As a science nerd and animal lover, I approve and I appreciate the attention to detail.
This is a children's picture book about 2 cats called Remy and Callie who become friends and Remy helps Callie to find her voice. The book has beautiful illustrations and a nice story about friends who help each other and take care of each other. It shows that it is ok not to be able to do the same as another person, such as speaking. In the book, the cat only spoke when she was ready to. This can be useful to show a child who has not yet spoken; to let them know that it is ok to speak when they feel ready to do so. I read this book with my daughter and she enjoyed it, although the book was a little bit long for her to concentrate on and it was a bit repetitive. However, it was still a good book and one that we will read together again.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Carpenter’s Son/Clovercroft Publishing for the digital review copy.
This was a special read for me, because one of my most faithful companions ever was a Tuxedo cat named Boots. We spent nine years together, and like Rembrandt in the story, he loves to go outside and roll in the dirt. He was an alpha male, for sure.
In this cute, little picture book, Rembrandt makes a friend, a pretty calico who can’t meow, so he vows to help her go looking for it, and they have lots of adventures while on the hunt.
It’s out in October, and it had an indie feel, in the best possible way. I loved the artwork and the story. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the further adventures of Rembrandt.
Remy, a tuxedo cat, befriends a Calico cat whom he names Callie. The two enjoy playing together with Remy taking the lead. While Remy purrs all of his communications (com-mew-nications?) , Callie never purrs. She speaks expressively, for example nodding.
The rest of this picture book is about looking for Callie's voice. Will she find it? If yes, what will lead to her purring?
This book gives kids a couple of messages. One is that friends don't have to have the same abilities to enjoy each other's company. Another is that it is okay to do things in one's own time.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Bright colorful pictures bring the kittens to life in a cute story about Remy who helps his new friend Callie find her voice, showing kids that it is okay to be different, to do things your own way and in your own time, and to speak up when necessary. I have some mixed feelings about a scene at the end which shows Remy pushing Callie into doing something she isn't entirely comfortable doing, but overall this book has some good messages.
Thanks to NetGalley and Carpenter's Son/Clovercroft Publishing for providing me with an ARC in return for my honest review.
The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat by Marah Walk Carroll is a short story about Remy helping a new friend find her meow. The story is paired with cute, child friendly illustrations. The story and the amount of text per page may be good for a young reader. The themes of making friends and helping friends are a nice teaching point, as well.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review. I read this book with my 8 year old who is obsessed with cats. He really, really enjoyed it and joined in the repeated phrases and actions. The art work is of a simple nature but bright and it certainly entertained and kept my son focused. If you have a cat obsessed child as well, I think this is worth checking out for them.
This story felt sad to me. I was conflicted that Callie was almost bullied into finding her meow and that she had to get scared to find it. Something just felt off about the book.
*I received and ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my review*
As a cat lover this story made me smile. It's sweet and well written. I loved the cats and loved the plot. Everybody need their meow :) Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat is a lovely book which tells how Remy helps Callie the Calico Cat find her meow. It is a lovely story with beautiful illustrations that both myself and my 4 year old son loved.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy.
Rembrandt is on a mission to help his friend find her meow. They set off on their adventure, but soon run into some trouble. This was a cute story about friends looking out for each other. I think kids will love both of the cats.
Remy, Sophie, and others help Lucky, a blind dog who only sees shapes and recently moved find his way home. The Adventures of Rembrandt the Tuxedo Cat is a cute book. I received a free ARC via Net Galley. I am voluntarily reviewing.
I thought the book was a little long for a picture book. Following the cute kittens throughout their day was fun. I felt like the story could have been wrapped up more quickly.
We are a family that loves cats and we’re very familiar with tuxedo cats, which is part of the reason why we were so interested in this book. My children and I enjoyed following along on Remy’s adventure with his new friend Callie the Calico as they searched for her meow. They searched high and low and it wasn’t until Callie got herself into a situation that her meow came out.
This was a super simple and easy to follow book. The adventure wasn’t a big one, but it was still worthwhile. My daughter enjoyed reading this while my younger son followed the pictures. A great story for young readers.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
A cute story of a cat, Remy, befriending another cat, Callie, who couldn't find her "meow". Remy spends his time trying to help Callie look for her "meow" in all sorts of places. Finally, when Callie gets stuck in a tree and Remy leaves to get help, Callie is able to find her "meow". It is a cute example of how your voice is always there especially when you need it the most.
