Story is meh (I feel defiant about all these no animal touching statements 🤣) but the silicone textures are great. Technically Elika is obsessed with the cover one, the rest are tolerably interesting.
The whole “Never Touch” series of books are a must have for anyone who interacts with babies through Kindergarten. Many books claim to be tactile in nature when, in fact, the illustrations differ so slightly from the base page that the descriptor is almost a lie. Not so with this terrific series that has a boldly colored animal on the right side of every page with a large section of that creature containing a contrasting color of distinctively bumpy, swirly, and/or striated rubbery-ness. The text on the left side of the page has different fonts and colors and is just as vivid as the critter it describes. The text, however, is the reason for only 4 stars. While illustrations are 5+, the text often has choppy rhythms that are sometimes awkward to read and while there is occasionally a bit of rhyme, the authors do not seem to work very hard at finding synonyms that might actually provide that component. Regardless of their textual shortcoming, parents, grands, and caregivers should look for all of these at bookstores, big box stores and Book Fairs at schools everywhere!
This is the perfect sturdy board book for little ones. The colorful pages, interesting text, and of course ability to feel the texture on each page make this a book that’s sure to find its way into your favorite books.
Even though most kids won’t be old enough to read this book, the text is eye-catching. The font and colors continually change. And in my opinion, if you’re attempting to teach recognition of various words, this makes it easier to do.
The left side of the spread contains a very short rhyming verse, while the right is of the animal. I don’t think it will take too long before toddlers are recognizing certain words and asking you to read this book over and over.
What Concerned Me Nothing at all.
What I Liked Most The silicone textures provided for touching and various colors and designs feel perfect for this type of book. Each page is designed to delight and capture interest.
For the first three animals in this “Look but don’t touch” touch book, I thought I’d be celebrating a 3-star review. Alas, once the story talked about a tea party in the forest, I was left shaking my head.
Moral: It continues to be don’t touch animals as it encourages kids to touch them.
Length: Shockingly short yet again, especially for $10.99
Favorite Line: “You must never touch a squirrel. It’s a nutty thing to do.”
Overall impression: I pulled this one out of our Little Library, so it’s clear I’m not the only baby daddy who find these books silly and no fun. It starts with promise because the squirrel and owl pages are actually funny. But the tired cash grab turns to a Pepe Le Pew rip off before abandoning all cleverness with the ghastly tea party finale featuring insects and a fox that are not “prickly” at all. Low expectations abound for the next in the series, Never Touch A Hot Stove, as it will assuredly end with a toaster enjoying a bath tub.
This is such a cute interactive book. There are rubber touchy-feely parts on each page. These parts usually represent an animal tail, or the porcupine body.
My daughter loves this book, and thought it was funny. She had so much fun feeling each page as I was reading it.
The illustrations are colorful, and pretty. My daughter loves colorful pictures, and books with animals. This was a great Easter present.
These aren’t exactly great literature but my baby loves them. He read the dinosaur one so much it fell apart. The porcupine/forest creatures version has cuter illustrations but slightly weaker rhymes.
Bit of a contradictory message in this book. “Never touch a porcupine” and there’s a porcupine picture to touch. However there is a really stellar, if incongruous, ending involving tea. Hence the 4 star rating.
We may have been the very first family to borrow this from the library, because all the pages were incredibly clean...and I can imagine the cover getting grimey quickly in a library setting.
My ten month old loves these series of books. The colors are bright, and the book has touchable parts on each page that she enjoys feeling and keeps her interest. The story is cute too.
This super cute touch and feel book is great for those with young kiddos. The book has a touch and feel on each page, as well as fun colors and fonts throughout.
