In Cynthia Baxter's fourth Lickety Splits Mystery, ice cream shoppe owner and amateur sleuth Kate McKAy doesn't waffle around scooping up new clientele at a historic hotel, but her hopes of becoming the Hudson Valley's reigning ice cream queen melt fast when murder checks-in!

From the moment Kate arrives at the imposing Mohawk Mountain Resort, not even luggage brimming with hot fudge can sweeten her stay. Instead of savoring alone time with her on-again boyfriend Jake and leading workshops on whipping together delectable frosty treats, she finds herself stranded at the isolated hotel with a small group of nutty characters--and a dead body.

When the corpse of wealthy cosmetics executive Bethany La Montaigne is suddenly found following a blackout, any of the five strangers trapped with Kate and Jake could be the killer. Chilled to the core, Kate vows to discover whether the victim's mortal enemy was a smooth-talking playboy, bubbly millennial, mousy librarian, charming Englishman, or the Mohawk's creepy general manager...

Bethany's life was chock full of scandals and there's little doubt that someone refused to endure another taste. With just a sprinkling of clues, it's up to Kate to bring justice to a culprit who believes that revenge is a dish best served cold...

Dear Reader,

Thanks for taking the time to check out my web site! I love the fact that the Internet makes it so easy to "talk" to readers (and to hear from them, too - my email address is below).

My favorite thing to do is read - and my second favorite is to write. Since 2003, I've been writing The Reigning Cats & Dogs Mystery Series, which features veterinarian Jessica Popper. The books also include the antics of Jessie's menagerie: her rambunctious Westie, Max; his shy sidekick, Lou the Dalmatian; aging pussycat Catherine the Great; newcomer Tinkerbell, a tiger kitten with the personality of a diva; mouthy Prometheus, a Blue and Gold Macaw with attitude; and last but not least, the silent yet seemingly wise chameleon Leilani. The newest book in the series is CROSSING THE LION.

I also launched a second mystery series, The Murder Packs a Suitcase Mystery Series, which will run concurrently with Reigning Cats & Dogs. The first book, also titled MURDER PACKS A SUITCASE, introduces Mallory Marlowe. Recently widowed at the age of 45, Mallory is still struggling to find her old self when she falls into a new job as a travel writer. In addition to researching exciting destinations, she happens upon the occasional murder - and she can't help getting involved in finding out whodunnit. The first book is set in Orlando, where she goes to discover whether or not the "old Florida," with alligator farms and pink plastic flamingoes and seashell jewelry, still exists despite the proliferation of glitzy theme parks. The second book in the series, TOO RICH AND TOO DEAD, is set in glamorous Aspen, where Mallory is trying to find out if even a non-skier can have a fun vacation.

Working on two different mystery series has been an interesting challenge. I've tried to make the two series different - but at the same time to include the same elements in the new series that readers of the original series seemed to enjoy. That means a likeable heroine, a compelling mystery with some quirky suspects and a few surprises, a touch of romance, and lots of humor. I'm really looking forward to seeing how readers respond to my new character and her adventures!

I always enjoy hearing from readers, so please don't hesitate to write and say hello. In the meantime, I hope you continue to enjoy my books!

Best wishes, Cynthia Baxter

Game of Cones by Cynthia Baxter is the fourth book in the cozy A Lickety Splits Mystery series. Each book in the series does contain it’s own mystery that will be solved so they can be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so. However, for those that follow the series from the beginning there will be some character development that carries over from book to book.

In this series Kate McKay had left her hometown after high school and had gone onto college and then a career in Manhattan. However, when Kate received news that her grandmother needed someone to come care for her Kate quickly returned to Wolfert’s Roost near the Hudson Valley, giving up her career. Once back in her hometown Kate decided she would follow her dream of opening her own ice cream shop to begin a new career path.

Kate’s business had been booming but now that colder weather has arrived she sees a need to drum up some new customers. Kate decides to head to Mohawk Mountain Resort to hopefully gain some new business but as soon as Kate arrives she finds herself alone with only a handful of guests. Unfortunately for Kate her habit of stumbling onto murders happens again when after a blackout the body of a wealthy guest, Bethany La Montaigne, appears leaving Kate to find yet another killer.

I have been following the A Lickety Splits Mystery series since the beginning and have found that I rather enjoyed each book that comes along. I think of this one as my don’t judge a book by it’s cover read because I wasn’t a huge fan of the covers on these compared to a lot of cozies but the characters and setting are very enjoyable so I remain glad I took a chance on them. This one moved the story to a isolated hotel and gave a nice spooky vibe to the setting. Also, one thing in this series that I love is at the beginning of every chapter there are brief facts listed on ice cream and I thought that was a cute addition to include to highlight the series.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I read Game of Cones three times before I decided to write this review. The idea of having an ice cream shop owner conduct an ice cream-making class while staying at what is supposed to be a high-end hotel sounds sweet and is enough to catch a reader’s attention but in truth is gets a bit sour once you read the story.

Kate and her boyfriend arrive at the hotel just as a storm hits and find themselves cut off from any help. At first, things go okay, they meet the guests who will be attending Kate’s lectures and demos, and even though they are an eclectic group, they seem excited and happy to be there and are looking forward to making and eating lots of ice cream. This is wonderful for Kate and thrills her even with a storm raging. But soon after they settle in, a murder occurs, and now they find themselves locked up with a killer on the loose.

Most of the book’s characters are average; I like the mystery surrounding the hotel’s manager more than the murder mystery aspect. However, I do not care for Kate’s boyfriend. His sudden show of temper when he thinks things are not going his way should be a warning to Kate. How many abused women forgave an abuser when he first yelled or displayed a bad temper only to find themselves beaten and worse later on?

The mystery was okay but not great. Even in a hurricane, the police would have been up the mountain, clearing away the debris as soon as they received the call that a murder had taken place. People would not have been left on their own to possibly mess with the evidence and dispose of anything incriminating. As far as I am concerned, the killer was easy to figure out right from the start. Ice cream aside, without a reasonable investigation and some concrete evidence, no plot will work, and unfortunately, I found this one lacking on many fronts. Overall, Game of Cones is an okay, easy, and quick read but is not overly exciting, and I hope it improves with the next installment.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. In this book, Kate and Jake head off to a historical hotel, where Kate is supposed to give some demonstrations for ice cream and its history, and spend some alone time with Jake. But when a storm hits and a fallen tree strands them at the hotel, things get a little tense. And when one of the guests is killed, they really have their hands full trying to figure out the murderer. Kate has to try and get close to the remaining guests and see who had the most reason to do the deed. It was good to spend time with Kate and Jake again, they have to figure out where their relationship is headed.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could picture the ice cream treats in my mind’s eye. The mystery was well plotted, and even though there were a limited number of suspects, I was still surprised at who the culprit was.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery. Trying to solve the mystery and trying some of the ice cream recipes is a good way to spend your time.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Kate McKay runs an ice cream shop in Wolfert's Roost, the quaint Hudson Valley village where she grew up. Kate is treating herself to a well-deserved busman's holiday but from the moment she arrives at the imposing Mohawk Mountain Resort, looking forward to some time alone with her boyfriend Jake, she finds herself in a tricky situation. She is stranded at the isolated hotel with a corpse who turns out to be wealthy cosmetics executive Bethany La Montaigne...

Cynthia Baxter's fourth Lickety Splits Mystery is all about ice cream, so it was a no-brainer for me to pick up Game of Cones. A good cozy murder-mystery and a big tub of Cappuccino Crunch ice cream - what's not to like! Right away, I loved the atmospheric setting - the perfect backdrop for a murder. Kate had many endearing qualities and I found her to be caring, amusing and dedicated. The descriptions of the ice cream flavours, sundaes, and other treats had me practically drooling and I'm very keen to try out the recipe for Lemon Ice Cream, and the one for Frozen Zabaglione (a custard). Learning all about the different types of ice cream as well as the history of ice cream making was a neat touch by the author. Overall, a superb locked-room style cozy that should not be missed, for cozy mystery food-lovers!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This is the fourth book in the Lickety Split Ice Cream Shoppe series by Cynthia Baxter.

I have to admit something. I really do love this series. But this installment just didn’t seem to catch me as the previous three did. I didn’t feel as connected to the characters like I had previously. It could be that the entire cast was off site at a different location. Not entirely sure why.

The story was interesting. There was a whole corporate beauty aspect that was a cool idea and implemented well. The book is easy to read and well plotted. So I am not sure what my problem was. I think it comes down to that “it factor” they always talk about. There was something missing and I can’t quite put my finger on what it was that stiemied me.

Overall it was decent, readable. Good. But don’t just take my word for it. Dig into this awesome series for yourself!

If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

Game of Cones by Cynthia Baxter is the 4th book in A Lickety Splits Mystery series, and another fun addition. Kate McKay left her high powered job in New York to return home to care for her grandmother and open up her dream ice cream shop. Kate and her boyfriend Jake set out for Mohawk Mountain Resort, a historical hotel so she can give clients a weekend workshop on ice cream. Do to a blizzard and road closure, they are stuck there with some interesting characters. When one of the participants is murdered, the sleuthing begins. I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait to continue Kate's adventures in the next book. Not only is this book fun, it has a great mystery also. I found this book to be a quick read, with twists and turns around every corner. If you love fun cozy mysteries, I highly recommend this book and series.

This is my favorite of the whole series! The storyline was so so good, with the setting of a resort in the middle of nowhere and then finding out you're actually trapped there with a murder? How creepy! That's definitely a pretty perfect setup for a great cozy mystery! The mystery was very well done with several layers and the solving of the crime was really interesting. Great read!

Normally I enjoy reading "light" mysteries but reading this was like eating Swiss cheese; too many holes. To start off, Katy is going to a huge Inn to give a weekend lecture/class on making ice cream at home, but instead of taking one of her employees - her friend Willow or her niece Emma - she takes Jake. He's the guy she can't decide if she wants a relationship with, even though he's explained, apologized, and pretty much kissed her ass to get back into his life. A huge storm is raging as they are driving there.

Immediately upon getting to this Inn a huge tree falls and blocks the road behind them. They get to the Inn and there are literally only seven other people there; five are guests, one is the Manager, and the last is the bellhop/handyman/whatever. REALLY? This big of an Inn and there are only FIVE guests? Of course there's no cell service, but somehow there's WiFi? The next day a prominent guest is murdered, but there's no mention of what the manager, Mrs. Moody, or her staff of one, or anyone else, do with the body. Sounds like they just left it were it fell, didn't cover it with a sheet. Nothing. They call the police but somehow the police have a lame excuse for not being able to get to the Inn. Oh, they use the "tree fell" excuse, but seriously, if someone prominent in New York society is murdered they'd send someone withing hours, not two days, to deal with it. There also should have been some conversation where the police tell them what to do with the body, but nothing is said.

The Inn is dark and spooky, there are only seven people registered so why are they spread out all over it? Where's the chef, the maids? And there are payphones!? It's 2020, no one has a payphone. Near the end of the book Katy gets a handwritten note to meet her in the Maze outside. She stupidly thinks it's from Jake. She's not normally so dumb. Stop and think, Katy. Why would Jake write you a note to meet you in an outdoor maze during a terrible two-day storm and she thinks it's him trying to be romantic? Dumb. In the end, the butler/handyman discovers her in the maze with the murderer, and evidently Jake has ESP and also goes out there too. Katy is saved, the road is cleared her Grams and Emma show up, having driven all the way up there. Why? Doesn't make sense. And after all that she still has doubts about being in a relationship with Jake! (eye roll) We're all kind of left hanging.

I chose this book from Netgalley because of the punny title and the fact it was about ice cream. I was unaware it was the fourth book in a series, but I don't think that mattered much. It soon became apparent, though, that this was very poorly written. The title and the ice cream were the best things about it.

The characters were unlikable stereotypes who didn't seem to care that someone had been murdered in their midst and their body left somewhere in the hotel, never to be mentioned again. One even had a complete change of character, going from creepy to puppy dog in a matter of a few pages. The plot was ridiculously implausible. Police would have been on the spot, no matter what the weather, and it would not have been up to one of the guests to inform the family about the death. Mrs Moody's backstory was extremely unlikely from a legal perspective. And what kind of ice cream business owner goes to a remote hotel without knowing if there are decent refrigeration facilities?

At once stage, Kate's niece said Google was her friend, and it's clearly the author's friend also because she used it to provide unrelated facts about ice cream at the start of each chapter, even down to including the URL of the website the fact came from. There were pages describing what a cult was, like it was some novel concept, and even an explanation of foosball. One can only assume the author thinks she needs to spoon-feed her readers because they aren't capable of looking up new words for themselves if they don't know them. But would they really not have heard of them?

And then there was the actual writing. At one point, the word 'suddenly' was used three times in two short sentences. This could have benefited from a good editor, both for writing and content. Kate was written much older than she was meant to be, more Miss Marple than Nancy Drew.

Overall, then, not one I would recommend. Despite the ice cream, I won't be reading the rest of the series or any other by Baxter.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book. I am providing my honest opinion voluntarily.

I’m so glad I came across this book. I’ve actually never read a cozy mystery before, but it was a pleasant change from the gritty police procedurals that I’m used to reading.

I loved Kate’s character right away. She’s a well-rounded character that I could identify with. She left behind a life she enjoyed to chase something she loves while devoting her time to caring for her family, but I could understand her ambivalence about giving a relationship a second chance after being hurt.

The setting was perfect for the story. The descriptions were great and made it easy to actually picture the scenery. It takes place at a resort in the Hudson Valley, in the midst of a nor’easter. When they get there, they realize that they’re stranded there by a downed tree, with no cell service and limited WiFi. So when a murder happens, they’re all stuck there together … knowing that one of them is a murderer.

In between workshops on the history of ice cream and how to make it, and trying to find some alone time with Jake, Kate also decides to do some amateur sleuthing to find out who the murderer could be. What she finds out about the other people at the resort is surprising. Everyone is hiding some secrets, and the murderer was the last person I expected it to be.

I loved how each chapter started with a fact about ice cream. I actually didn’t know any of the information that was presented, and they were surprisingly interesting. Sources were provided in case you want to learn a little more, as well. I especially liked the fact that there were ice cream recipes at the end of the book — things you could make at home, even without any special equipment.

Wow, this book was bad. I should start off by saying that I have not read any other books in the series but I don’t think that really hindered my reading experience.

This book was SO childish. I feel like I would’ve liked this if I was in like sixth grade. The tone of the novel is just so immature. I know the series is about ice cream but literally everything is compared to ice cream and it quickly became annoying. I wish this wasn’t the case because this book had potential, I was excited to be able to read a cute easy book but this book wasn’t it.

Another issue I had was that a mini history lesson was given when anything new was mentioned. For example, cults were mentioned (and not super relevant) and the author wrote multiple pages (on the ebook, not sure about the physical) about cults as if the reader has never heard of the concept; because this information was not crucial to the book, the author should have skipped the history lesson and let the reader Google the topic if needed.

However, the biggest issue I had with this novel was that there was a murder and no one cared. These characters were stuck at a resort for the weekend with a murderer and dead body and no one is batting an eye????? It does not make sense and truly ruined the novel.

While reading this novel I found that I could not connect to any of the characters because they were all super unlikeable and the plot was just so boring and mundane. The most interesting characters were the resort employees, unfortunately they did not get enough attention. I wish the author really examined these characters.

I think this novel would’ve been significantly better if the author took a step back and looked at the story as a whole. Fixing the plot holes and going more in depth would have been extremely beneficial. This novel just felt unnecessary.

Twitter review:

- childish
- major plot holes
- characters are stuck at a resort with a murderer and dead body and don’t care??
- annoying
- unlikable characters
- no depth
- unnecessary
- did not expect much but definitely expected better

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the ARC.

this book opens with Kate and Jake heading to a hotel for a weekend of ice cream workshops. the weather is terrible, and a fallen tree traps them at this massive, somewhat run-down hotel. it's a great opening! however, the author lets the atmosphere evaporate, only referring to the weather or the hotel's appearance/character a few more times. a lot of things don't make sense (the only people at the hotel are specifically attending the workshop, there are no other guests at all; no families with kids are attending what seems like a very kid-friendly workshop, etc) and the story progresses in a manner that rang somewhat inauthentic (someone has been murdered? let's continue our planned activities), which took me out of the story. I would be totally freaking out in this kind of situation, and that just doesn't happen.

there's a lot of time spent on giving background information about Kate, Jake, their failed romance, and their attempt to work things out. I think it sets Kate up to seem sort of sad, because she clearly seems more invested in her high school experiences than any of her life that happened after (giving plenty detail about how Jake was a popular jock and then vaguely mentioning she worked in PR in NYC for years - I would have way more interesting things to reflect on about my time in NYC than a high school ex! dang). I've pretty consistently not liked the romance or the way Jake is written. plus, the suspenseful bit at the end hinges on their relationship and depends on Kate acting incredibly stupid/making decisions that really don't make sense, which was disappointing for her character.

I wish this could have focused more on cultivating the creepy atmosphere and presented Kate as more of a mature and functional adult.

Kate and her boyfriend Jake are off to a remote resort for a work weekend, where Kate will be hosting workshops about making ice cream while taking time to enjoy themselves as they explore the resort and the surrounding mountainous trails. Unfortunately, the weather has different plans -- as Kate and Jake make their way to the resort, a raging storm causes a large tree to fall, blocking the access road into and out of the resort. This leaves Kate and Jake to enjoy the weekend with only a few others, with only two hotel staff on site.

The small group is diverse, from meek, small-town Franny, to cosmetics mogul Bethany. The weekend has a rocky start, when after their first dinner together and the loss of power at the resort, Bethany's body is discovered and it seems she has been murdered.

Between workshops, Kate begins to investigate the other guests, to see who may have had reason to harm Bethany. We follow along as Kate's investigation reveals hidden connections among the guests, as she trie to find Bethany's killer.

This was a fun cozy mystery that will leave you wanting more fro Cynthia Barker, and a few scoops of ice cream! Although this book is part of a series, this was my first book from Baxter and had no issues reading it as a stand-alone. The characters, setting, and plot were well-developed -- you'll feel like you're at the ominous resort, weathering the storm in the company of a murder. While I was able to guess who the killer was, this book was still such a fun read!

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of this book!

This book straight up felt like a repeat of the second book, in terms of reading experience. Thus, I'm gonna keep this review short and sweet. I again came close to guessing who the murderer was, Fanny. I definitely had my reservations about her. Firstly, she fit into the whole character-thats-present-but-not-heavily-suspected trope. Also, the author gave us plently of clues as to why Yoko, Gordan and Mrs Moody arent the murderer. Which left us with Naveen and Franny. However, Franny again didn't really have much important screentime or a backstory as compared to Naveen. Furthermore, I found the line of having a new chapter in life pretty suspicious following the murder of Bethany.
Next, the plot and pacing. The pacing was good and kept me hooked, up to the later third of the book, where we basically kept finding out new information on our suspects. Plot wise, I found it to be a little similar to book 2 where there was a rich people gathering or event of some sort. Therefore, since again, Kate wasn't really "involved" in the murder or had some personal connection to it, it was a little lackluster. Finally, the fight, the way it wasn't resolved properly and the fact that he has to continue waiting is bugging me so much. Like why? I totally understand that couples fight and have disagreements but at this point, Kate is a hundred percent playing him. This is particularly aggravating as I have read the whole of four books, expecting them to get together at some point but no. Instead I get a breakup and a to be resolved fight. Like are you kidding me?

Katherine McKay quit her job as a PR executive to open her store called Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe which specializes in homemade gourmet ice cream.

Ever since she was little Kat has dreamed of visiting Mohawk Mountain Resort, a high-end resort nestled in the  Catskill Mountains. So when out of the blue she receives an invitation from the resort’s general Moody, Merle Moody by email, she accepts.

Kate also wants to use her time there as a getaway with Jake, her high school beau. Jake runs a local organic dairy and is there as Kate’s assistant.

According to the manager, the resort frequently conducts theme weekends as a way of attracting visitors during the off-season. They also host ice cream themed workshops. Merle would like Kate to offer classes on topics on how to make some of her exotic recipes such as Exotic Ice Cream Flavors at Home and Thirty-Three Toppings to Make Your Ice Cream Sensational. Seeing as mid-November is an off-season, the manager is hoping to use this opportunity to attract visitors.

Then following a blackout at the resort, one of the participants is murdered. apparently stabbed multiple times, Kate has to identify the killer and bring them to justice. Overall, good read.

The ice cream recipes included in the book all sound wonderful.

Thank You Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the ARC! This review is based on my honest opinion.

Kate McKay owns an ice cream shop and together with her boyfriend, Jake goes to Mohawk Hotel, which is said to be sort of haunted and owned by an eccentric Mrs. Moody. However, there was a storm and a large tree fell across the road, preventing them from leaving the place. Kate is hosting an ice cream workshop at the place and there were other people who also came to attend the workshop--Bethany and her boyfriend Jake, Yoko, Fanny and Naveen. Then a power goes off and Bethany was found murdered, stabbed. Who has killed Bethany?

I kind of enjoyed reading this book. This book is more like a cozy mystery thriller with Kate acting as as Nancy Drew. Each of the people in the workshop had their own vendetta against Bethany so it was kind of interesting to know who would be the killer. Also, learning about the different types of ice cream particularly the history of ice cream was interesting and I kind of learned a bit about ice cream. However, it was not really fast paced, a little bit of unnecessary parts but it was good thriller and quiet enjoyable and also sometimes funny.

Overall, this is a good thriller--learning about ice cream history is a plus factor and which I actually enjoyed reading. Worth four stars!

When Kate McKay is asked to host an ice cream making workshop in the mountains, she sees it as a chance to get away with her boyfriend, Jake, for the weekend. A storm is brewing as Kate and Jake drive up to the resort and a very large tree falls right behind their car, essentially blocking the resort off from the rest of the World. Until the storm passes and someone can clear the roadway, a skeleton crew and only a few guests are stuck at the resort.

Rather than cancelling the workshop, the manager suggest that they continue on and keep the things on track. When one of the attendees is murdered that night, Kate not only has to deliver the workshop, she finds herself trying to figure out who the murderer is and why. With everyone, except Kate and Jake, being a suspect Kate needs to watch her back as she tries to get the scoop before the murderer can freeze Kate once and for all.

This is the fourth book in this series, but the first that I have read. There were no gaps and it reads find as a stand alone. I enjoyed the factoids that were shared at the start of each chapter on the history of ice cream and will be checking out the included recipes as well. An enjoyable whodunit. I will be back for another serving in this series.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Kay and her boyfriend head up to a historic inn where she is going to run an ice cream workshop while the two rekindle their romance. What should have been a fairy tale turns into a horror movie. A wicked storm traps them on the property with no way in or out and no one to come to the rescue. And rescue may be what they need. On the first night of the weekend, one of the participants, a spoiled waste of space heiress, is murdered. Clearly the suspect pool is limited to the few people who in the building.

While Kay soldiers on with her workshops, she is also investigating the attendees and the two staff people on premises. She discovers there are plenty of clues in the backstories of each of them. She is amazed at the connections she discovers and with each discovery, there is a motive. Can Kate find out the truth before help arrives or the killer decides she knows too much.

Often in these cozies the reason the heroine gets involved in the mystery can be a bit wobbly. By having the people confined to an area, it eliminates any question. The story itself is twisted enough to entertain and fascinate and the characters would fit into a classic English mystery.
It makes for an enjoyable read.

In this 4th installment of the Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe Mystery, Kate and her boyfriend, Jake, arrive at Mohawk Mountain Resort, a short drive from their home in the Catskill Mountains of New York, during a major storm. A fallen tree blocks the road in and out shortly after Kate and Jake arrive. Only a few other guests, the hotel manager, and a mysterious bellman are able to make if for the Ice Cream themed workshop weekend that Kate and Jake are running. The first night, during a blackout at the resort, one of the participants is murdered. In between running the ice-cream workshops and trying to get in some alone time with Jake, Kate works to solve the murder mystery and find out who the other guests and manager really are.

This storyline was a bit far-fetched to me, but overall the mystery and the secrets of the other guests were enjoyable if somewhat predictable. I wish I had been able to get to know Kate a bit more. But, I have never read any of the earlier installments which could be the issue.

Thank you to NetGalley, Cynthia Baxter, and Kensington Books for an ARC of this book

This mystery novel, with only a few suspects in a hotel eerily resembling the Overlook (there’s even a hedge maze) is long on atmosphere but short on thrills. After the murder, you’d think there’d be a lot of tension as people realize they’re locked in with a killer. But almost everyone, from the creepy Mrs. Danvers-like Mrs. Moody to the giddy Franny seems to shrug off the crime as if it were a mere momentary inconvenience, like a power outage.

Jake, Kate McKay’s would-be boyfriend, gets testy because she becomes focused on solving the crime instead off getting amorous with him. Gee, fella, sorry a vicious murderer on the loose is cutting into your sexy time!

In the end, the criminal was easy to spot. Once you eliminated the unlikely suspects, there was really only one candidate. So what I really liked about this was Kate’s devotion to ice cream, the fascinating history of the frozen treat and others similar to it in other cultures and the joy she spreads when she encourages others in the making, crafting and eating of it.

Heck, it’s summer here. Time for to start freezing my own ice cream treats.

I was a little disappointed in this book due to one major plot point which niggled throughout the whole story.

Kate runs an ice-cream shop and had been asked to run some workshops at an expensive hotel resort. Kate and her boyfriend arrive at the hotel in a major storm which results in the road being blocked and therefore everyone being trapped in the resort. In true Agatha Christie style.

Then one of the characters, Bethany, is brutally murdered at the moment the electricity cuts out.

Kate then decides that alongside running the workshops as planned over the weekend she will solve the murder.

The problem I have is with the body. Bethany is found covered in blood in the dark. As the police are unable to get to the site Mrs Moody, the hotelier just says "I'll take care of the body" and that is the last anyone hears of it. They don't find a murder weapon of have any idea how she died.

Everyone then carried on as normal, including the ice-cream workshops, communal meals and snuggling on the sofas. This really bugged me.

What should have been an excellant business opportunity and romantic getaway for Kate McKay turns into an Agatha Christie-like experience. Stranded at the historic Mohawk hotel (descriptively it sounds like the Stanley Hotel in Colorado) because of a downed tree, Kate and Jake are going to have to do more than to educate the guests on the many wonders of ice cream. Did you know that you can make ice cream with a machine? The recipe for lemon ice cream is found at the back of the book and Kate does a great job or telling us and her "students" how it is possible. So when she isn't teaching or sleuthing, because they are essentially trapped with a killer, she is trying not to freak out about Jake and how he stood her up on prom night more than 10 years ago. There is quite a cast of characters, very unique much like you would find in an Agatha Chritie story. They all seem to be connected to the victim in one way or another including the hotel manager. So which one did the deed? You're just going to have to chill until you can get your copy and read as the drama unfolds.

This is the 4th in the Lickety Splits mystery series. Kate McKay has always wanted to visit the historic Mohawk Mountain Resort and she is invited to come from the general manager she jumps at the chance. She brings Jake along to help with her ice cream themed workshops and with a bad storm and when a tree falls right behind their car on the road they are essentially cut-off as they head to the resort. Kate still proceeds with her workshop and when the power goes out and one of the participants is killed Kate jumps in to solve the murder as she is stuck there with a potential murderer. This was a good story but a few flaws as they don’t go much into what they did with the dead body. This is a classic closed room mystery as there is a limited number of suspects and Bethany the murder victim had secrets and enemies. I enjoyed this and will continue to read this series so looking forward to the next installment. Well done.

Game of Cones us the fourth book in Cynthia Baxter's Lickety Splits Mystery.
I'm a huge fan of mystrey novels, however this was a huge disappointment. The story was boring and the mystrey had no build up, no substance and when the mystrey was solved it was the most predictable ending ever.
Everything in this story just feels fake, especially the character's reactions to events that happen. I know that there was an attempt to distract everyone after everything that happens but it just made me want to crawl in and shake some sense into them.
The main character just doesn't feel like a detective, even with the little effort that is put in to actually solve the murder, she isn't my favourite amateur detective. Maybe she was better in the first books but in terms of 'mystrey and murder' this wasn't great.
The thing that I did like had nothing to do with the mystrey and that's the recipes provided at the end plus the facts we get before each chapter. That was interesting.

I enjoyed this next in series that has a theme very much like a mysterious Agatha Christie ! This is the 4th installment of the Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe Mystery series. I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and find it charming with likable charcters and always a good sleuth .
Kate and her boyfriend, Jake are going to a mountain resort in the Catskill Mountains. A storm is happening that is blocking the way in right after they arrive. Only a few people made it into the resort before the storm. Right away I love the setting that is atmospheric and perfect for a murder.

Kate and Jake are to put on a Ice Cream themed workshop for the entire weekend. When a blackout occurs and a victim is found murdered their plans for a fun weekend are on hold. Now Kate wants to solve the murder and make sure no one else at the resort is harmed.

This was a fun sleuth with the perfect setting for mystery and murder. I look forward to the next in series.

Intriguing! Kate and her boyfriend, Jake, head to the Mohawk Mountain Resort for an event where Kate will do presentations on ice cream and for some relaxation. Unfortunately, the weather is terrible and a big tree falls down behind them blocking the road from coming or going. The few guests that were able to make it are at dinner when the power goes out. After dinner, one of the guests is found stabbed to death. Now Kate and Jake are stranded in the resort with a killer. Kate investigates the remaining guests to see if she can figure out the killer. An intriguing mystery with interesting characters, who all seemed to have some kind of a connection to the victim, and interesting lessons on ice cream. I enjoy this series with the ice cream trivia bits at the beginning of each chapter. I hope to read more of this series and see what kind of intriguing flavors Kate creates next. I'm also rooting for Kate and Jake's relationship to work out!

Here’s the scoop! It was supposed to be an exhilarating Ice Cream themed workshop at the Mohawk Mountain Resort but there was a storm causing a tree to leave the small quirky group stranded at the motel, and even worse, with a dead body and no explanation.
Thank you Netgalley, Kensington Books, and Cynthia Baxter for the opportunity to read and review this book. This little gem is the forth book in the Lickity Splits Mystery series. Though it’s part of a series, I have yet to read the first three and had no problem reading it as a stand alone. I thought it was a cute and enjoyable cozy mystery. I enjoyed the fun facts on ice cream that were given at the beginning of each chapter. The characters were pretty quirky in their own ways. It was a quick and easy read with some twists and turns as well as the ever loving cutesy romance. If you like cozy mysteries, give this one a whirl! I rate this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read the books before this and I absolutely loved them. This one was a bit slow for me in the beginning, it took me a while to get into it for some reason. Once I got to chapter 8 or 9, I took off and kept going the best I could. When I had the time I picked the book up and read until I got sleepy. Mohawk seems like an ideal vacation spot, get into it with nature and the mountains, but that creepy Mrs. Moody will need to mind her own business and to pop up on people.

Finding out who the actual killer was, wasn’t too surprising once I thought about who the person was and their personality. Those are the ones you need to be looking out for from the beginning lol.

It is a good read if your into murder mystery stories. I hope there is another one coming soon. These books could definitely make the hallmark murder mystery movie channel. It makes me think of those Murder She Bake and Aurora Teagarden movie series.
