rudimentary, but a fun read to pick up from time to time over a few months. Elizabeth has a bitching metal contemporary obituary:

“The fierce old hen sat still, brooding over the English nation, whose pullulating energies were coming swiftly to ripeness and unity under her wings. She sat still; but every feather bristled; she was tremendously alive.” BOOM!

OK. Another brit history book, admirably circumscribed by the tutors - henry vii through elizabeth. That brevity made it accessible and pleasant. Just read to keep that chronology in mind.

The first book I ever ordered from The History Book Club when joining it during high school was about Tudor foreign policy. Getting around to reading the thing took years, but after doing so I went on to read more about the period.
