I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

"I couldn't stop thinking about my roommate. I was in some big fucking trouble."

I've read this book a year ago and somehow I thought I had reviewed this, but I forgot and I'm so sorry. What I didn't forget was the story. Moving on is my favorite book in the Charleston series and I totally enjoyed it, even though I wasn't a big fan of Chris at the previous books. Somehow his inner turmoil and his battles with himself , along with his growing relationship with Bette made him look a better person in my eyes and I liked their story.

I loved so much the scenes where he was renovating her bathroom and he would help her whenever she needed him, but I also liked how they would act like an old married couple.

"If I get scared, I can cover my face with it."
"I'll be sure not to fart under it then."

I really enjoyed how this preppy guy fell for the tatted girl, how sometimes image is not everything and you can find a way to find yourself and move on with your life and get over your past's heartbreak.

**I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher Lyrical Press via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The expected publication date is February 16th, 2016**

This is the third story in the College of Charleston series however it can be read as a stand alone. It just so happens that I read the first in the series however not the second. In this story it pucks up with Chris who was one of the key characters in the first installment. Although not required, I did find it helpful that I read the first one as I was able to put some things in to context particularly when it came to his ex.

I really liked Bette in this story. She wasn't the typical girl you expect. She had piercings and visible tattoo's and values that she held dear. She was not what you would expect if you judged a book by it's cover which was the premise of the whole story.

The romance aspect of this story also worked for me. Bette and Chris started out as friends and roommates. You could see the evolution of the attraction as the story unfolded. Sometimes the attraction is so instant that you are left wondering how it happened however in this story you had the pleasure of seeing it unfold. I liked that. I also really liked Chris' mother, she was a little spitfire.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and I also enjoyed this one. I think I will go back to read the middle story so I can complete the story. I recommend reading the entire series however if you do not have time, this one will also suffice.

I received this free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

So when I requested this book, I definitely didn't realize it was part of the College of Charleston series. I've read the first two novels in the series courtesy of NetGalley, and really didn't like either one of them. In fact, I couldn't even finish the second one.

But this book...I liked this book. It wasn't my all time favorite - Chris was pinning over "angelic" Annie too much for me to fall in love with this novel, but I didn't hate it.

So yeah, I like Chris. He's a great guy, just the person you want to date. Loyal. Dedicated. Smart. Hot. Passionate. Very much a good guy to date and marry. But he has his hang-ups. Especially about Annie and Ryan. I mean, dude, things happened. If she left you for your best friend, obviously it wasn't mean to be and you should just get over it.

But Bette. I love Bette. She is amazing. So her own person who doesn't give two shits about what others think and is willing to give up a "normal" life to see who her true self is. I want to be Bette when I grow up.

I think these two are so odd together that it makes sense they belong together. It was nice seeing their story fold out. I'm glad I didn't realize this was part of the series I had trouble with because I might not have requested it other wise.

I think this will be a hit with New Adult readers!

Moving On is one of those new adult books that will totally catch your interest. When I first read the blurb, learning that it's a roommate-rebound story, I immediately signed up for the ARC of this.

Fortunately, the author grant me an access!

I was really excited to read it, though I'm not expecting too much of the book. When it comes to new-to-me authors, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt. So even though the pace was slow in the first 7 or 8 chapters, I did my best to stay in the game.

So I waited and waited for the part where I'll finally say, "Yes! I'm gonna like this one!"

And finally, that moment came when all that what I had been hoping for to happen happened!

What I'm really trying to point out here is that although it was not my kind of book, with its slow pace at first, it turned out that I liked it even more.

There was much more in the story than just the living-in-together–full-of-pent-up-sexual-frustration aspect of the book. I like it that Bette knows herself, stands on her beliefs, and loves her parents despite all the bullshit they(?) give her. I also like that Chris is not an Alpha. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being an Alpha; it's just that he doesn't have to be one for us readers to melt like a puddle of goo in front of him with his neat-freak-nice-guy kind of way.

Plus, he's too cute to be one. I prefer him this way.

I also like that part when .

It doesn't hurt either that the two of them had a very well-rounded developed romance. They were just roommates first, then friends, then complicated friends, and then lovers. To be honest, I want this kind of love story for myself. Less drama but you know that their love is real.

What I didn't like was one of the side characters. I supposed Cami was in the first two books, IDK, but I didn't like her. She came out too strong, too bitchy, she made Hitler a saint. She thought she knew it all. She acted like a friend to Chris, but she didn't even ask and care about his feelings toward what he had gone through. Because of that, I might not want to read whatever book she's in. My goodness, I sound like a bitch to my own ears. Anyways...

I like to tackle more points in what I love in this book, but I don't really wanna do a "retelling," so if you may, please read it. You might not be that into the romance side of the story, but you'll really like our heroine here. She'll teach you on how to be a bitch without really being one. Hahaha.

Enjoy Moving On!

Moving On (College of Charleston, #3) by Kate L. Mary BY Kate L. Mary

First off I want to tell y'all that I am a huge lover of this series. The whole college of Charleston series has me wrapped up. I was ecstatic when I saw that Moving On was available to me because I could not wait to read Chris's story. After reading The List I totally felt so bad for him. Don't get me wrong I wanted Annie to find her happiness even if it was with Ryan it just killed me to have him so hurt and in the way he had to find out. I absolutely LOVED this story of Bette and Chris. I enjoyed seeing their friendship truly grow. They truly truly became best friends before anything and I really liked seeing them get to that point. I hated that they took so long but I think that it was necessary so that they could finally realize that they loved each other. Also for Chris I liked his evolution of realizing what he is really upset about when it comes to Annie & Ryan. Him realizing where his anger actually lies. Thank you for the opportunity to have read this. I loved every bit of it and I look forward to more College of Charleston!

Moving On is the third book of the College of Charleston series, it follows Chris and Bette. Chris is still hung up over Annie and Ryan so he decides to move out of the dorm. He finds himself bunking with Bette.

I really like Chris, he’s a great guy – he’s sweet, loyal, dedicated, hot, and he knows his way around construction (remodelling rooms and all). Who doesn’t like a guy who knows construction? He is definitely the kind of guy one would want to spend their life with.

Bette is amazing, she is definitely a character who stood out. I love her strength – after finding herself she doesn’t change back to the “normal” girl her mother wants. Despite still having the need to please her parents she doesn’t let it take over. Despite not letting anyone’s opinion of her change her, she longs to be accepted as who she is without any compromise.

Moving in with Bette not only helped Chris, it also helped Bette. Without realising, both helped each other with their demons. I love how they could talk to each other effortlessly, and just be themselves around each other. Their story is the definition of a slow burn – they went from roommates to friends, and then from friends to something more. The evolution of their relationship is definitely one of the best I’ve ever read. However, I would have liked to see them as a couple together, I felt like the book ended too quickly. Other than that, it was a great read and definitely one I wouldn’t mind rereading.

Sometimes when you want it the least it finds you faster and all too unsuspecting. You can tell yourself no all you want and run even. Somehow it will always find you again right where you left it in your heart. Let’s you know all those others you thought you loved were only to prepare you to open you to the real thing right there in front of you and to know that right here right now it is the real thing.
Imagine how surprised Bette and Chris are when they figure out they have become the most unwilling hostages of the heart. Yet disguised as a friendship/roommates. The one the most unaware is Chris because his best friend had taken his ex from under his nose the same way. No bro code there. Never once coming to him to explain if for no other reason but out of respect or the bro code. Even after he knew Chris was angry with him. Basically Chris’s feelings were hurt and he was very disappointed in his childhood friend.
So he ends up moving off campus since he lived 2 doors down from his ex-Annie which meant the chance of running into her and Ryan were greater. What he really couldn’t get out of his head was walking in on his best friend and his ex-having sex. That this had been going on the whole time he had been dating her is what got him the betrayal of the friend hurt more really.
When he moves he ends up in the best section of downtown Charleston. In the Victorian home area where the homes are at least 100 years old. He moves in with the most unlikely person you could ever see Chris with. Why? Well, Bette has a rather large tattoo that starts on her arm and runs along her shoulder and ends on her back.
She also has several piercings one on her mouth, her hair is a bright red and she enjoys vintage sexy 1950’s clothing. Oh let’s not forget the red lipstick. Although he was telling himself he was still in love with Annie and Bette was not his type. He had to admit she was Sexy as Hell! She show him around and agrees to have him as a roommate.
He starts a new job as a waiter and tries to get back into the swing of things at school but all the time trying to avoid Ryan, Annie, and friends. In the meantime Bette and he start becoming acquainted and start to like each other as people. He learns that she comes from a very judgmental family and background, mainly her mother, which he unfortunately gets to meet. He seems to become her defender in many ways after that bad experience in many ways. In how to give her support in not allowing others to degrade her because of her choices of style of dress, tats, or piercings. For she is a good person.
I totally enjoyed this books and the message if instills in how we need to show kindness, tolerance, and love to others. How we have to have respect for our friendships and respect boundaries and remember betrayal can cut, sometimes forever. Sometimes “I’m sorry can’t fix everything” if your actions say something else. This is a book all women should read or any person being bullied into being different. For it hurts your mind, body, and spirit of who you are too.

FYI - This review might spoil parts of the first two books in the series, THE LIST and NO REGRETS.

This is the third book in Kate L. Mary's COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON series, and I think it might just be my favorite! Like all of Kate's books, MOVING ON is a quick read featuring complex characters.

Straight-edge and protective Chris is furious and depressed. He just walked in on his lifelong best friend in bed with the woman he loves, and he isn't ready to forgive either one of them. Desperate to get out of the dorm to avoid awkward run-ins with his ex-girlfriend and ex-best friend, he needs to find a new place to live, and fast.

Tattooed and pierced Bette needs to find a roommate. Determined to renovate the old house left to her by her beloved deceased aunt, she needs help paying the rent. So when Chris responds to her flier, they immediately decide that living together is the best option for both of them.

As Chris works through his grief and devastation, Bette has her own demons to work past, including her judgmental parents and regrets about an old relationship. The two become friends first, but soon realize they might have a mutual attraction, only to realize that they both need to move on from their past in order to have a future together.

As a romance reader, I definitely prefer the "slow burn" to "insta-love," and this book is practically the definition of a slow burn.

I have a confession: when I read THE LIST, the first book in this series, I was not a fan of Chris. Don't get me wrong, I felt bad about his situation at the end of the book and I wanted him to have a happy ending, but I had found him to be a bit clingy and frustrating, and very wrong for Annie. However, I really enjoyed getting to know him better in MOVING ON and found myself cheering for him and Bette the whole time. I could really relate to watching Chris struggle to move on and be happy.

I also loved the complexity of Bette's character. She loves having tattoos, multiple piercings, and brightly dyed hair to express herself and her individuality - but she hates when people make assumptions about her because of it. After growing up with strict parents who make it very clear they don't approve of her choices, she longs to find friends and family who accept her for who she is. She's also set in her convictions not to have sex with anyone unless she is in a serious committed relationship, despite other characters' assumptions about her promiscuity based on her appearance.

This was a great read that I flew through within hours. I enjoyed seeing old characters, including Annie & Ryan and Cami & Liam in this book. I look forward to reading more from Kate L. Mary!

Having read all about Chris's heartbreak in “No Regrets”, the second book in the College of Charleston series, I couldn't wait to see Chris find his happy ever after. Kate L. Mary takes us back to a college town with a group of young people with love stories that include past hurts, deceit, and undeniable attraction. While not quite as steamy as most books that I read, Kate adds an element of innocence and tenderness topped with plenty of angst and sexual tension. The heat between Chris and Bette are enough to keep you warm and riveted throughout the story. “Moving On” is a story of ultimate betrayals, forbidden desires, forgiveness and discovering your true identity.

Chris Presley is broken hearted, lonely, and is looking for a way to move on after he catches his best friend with the girl that he loves. When looking for a new place to live, beautiful firecracker Bette opens the door to new possibilities that Chris didn't even know existed. Chris embarks on a new journey with a fiery red head that will teach him to live life, forgive others, and that a shy blonde is not who he needs in his life. It was great getting to see into the mind of this quiet, conservative, well mannered guy and get to see his “dirtier” side and experience his desires for Bette. He is funny, caring, sexy and knows how to charm a reader's socks off!

From the moment Bette was introduced I couldn't help but like this young, tattooed, pierced woman who is finding her own identity. She is unapologetic about who she is, dedicated to her beliefs, and is a free spirit. She possesses qualities that are admirable and most of us struggle to achieve at any age which makes her character easy to like and relate to. She is beautiful inside and out and it shines throughout her story.

Kate L. Mary delivers a story with the trials and tribulations of first love, college, and finding yourself. Her characters have emotional depth and her story lines are interesting and heartfelt. I highly recommend for a lover of coming of age romances with friends to lovers that has plenty of sweetness and heat.

This book begins with Chris moving out of the dorms to get away from his ex girlfriend who is now dating his best friend. He rents a room in an old house that belongs to Bette.

Bette is a strong woman who knows exactly what she wants out of life, except when it comes to men. She forms a fast friendship with Chris and finds herself confiding in him in a way that she has never done with anyone before.

A new love interest for Bette brings confusion for both Chris and Bette. Can they ever be more than friends and can Chris ever move past his heartbreak over his ex and forgive and move on?

This is the third book in the series but could easily be read as a standalone. After being really disappointed with book two I was thrilled to find that this book is much better and back on the level of the first book.

Bette is an amazing character that is well developed and fun to read. I liked the shifting POV's...it keep the story very engaging. Chris seemed a little too stubborn about the whole Ryan/Annie thing but otherwise it was great to see him get his story.

The story moves at a decent pace but it does take the entire book for these two to finally work things out. My only real complaint is that I was left wanting so much more in the end...it was very abrupt.

My thoughts:

POV switches between Chris and Bette
Quick hook or slow starter? 4 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 4
Level of Romance between characters: 4
Passion/Heat level: 3.5 (nothing until the last chapter and even then not much)
Angst/Heartbreak: 4 (both characters have obstacles they are dealing with)
Cliffhanger?: Not really a cliffhanger but it ends very abruptly.

Overall I enjoyed it but was disappointed in the ending. I am hoping the author has another book planned to wrap up everyone's stories.

This is the third book in the College of Charleston series by Kate L. Mary. I read the second book before this one. This series is really about learning to accept the past so that you can move forward toward the future. This book was about Chris who thought he was in love with Annie and had a difficult time when she moved on to dating his best friend Ryan. It takes Chris a while to understand why he is so upset. He moves in to a house with Bette who is trying to be herself and struggles with parental disapproval.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Chris and Bette were both strong characters. Even though they were both dealing with some issues, they were open to new friendships and truly cared for each other. I liked that Chris and Bette got to know each other over time. They became friends by talking to each other and getting to know one another. It felt like they had a true friendship, one where they knew how to listen to each other and say what the other person needed to hear. I liked how Chris’ feelings changed overtime toward Bette and toward Annie. I liked how the author chose to complete the story line between Ryan and Chris.

I read The List and loved it. Then I missed No Regrets, because I had no idea when it came out. When I got Moving On I had no idea it was from this series so that was a nice surprise. And we have another WINNER! Loved this book through and through. The humor, the emotional turmoil of young adults, the overall expression of the story was amazing and I enjoyed it thoroughly

Poor Chris finally gets his happy ending and Bette gets the guy she deserves to have in her life. YAY!

Kate L Mary has done it again.
This is the third book in the College of Charlston series and can be read as a stand alone.
Engaging from the very beginning to the very end. This story follows Chris (who in my opinion did behave a little bit immaturely) as he grows as a person. Bette as a character is fabulous!

I got this audiobook via a promo code at my request and this is my voluntary review.

Book 3 in the College of Charleston series picks up following Chris and his attempts at moving on from Annie.

"Moving On" by Kate L. Mary is a heartfelt contemporary romance centered around Bette, a woman who discovers her aspirations after caring for her dying aunt, Missy. Bette's goals—keeping her aunt's house, pursuing her dream job, and remaining authentic—form the foundation of her character's empowering journey.

Her encounter with roommate Chris, burdened by past heartache, leads to a captivating dynamic.
Their chemistry, witty banter, and personal growth stand out, as Bette's independence and Chris's reinvention intertwine. The narrative delves into Bette's business venture and Chris's emotional struggle, offering a balanced exploration of their growth. Beyond romance, the novel emphasizes resilience and embracing life's uncertainties.

Narration by Candace Childs was brilliant.

Moving On (College of Charleston #3) was a good read by Kate L. Mary. Bette has spent a year with her dying aunt. She will do anything to keep her aunt's house. Chris is the perfect roommate. They have an attraction but don't want to cross those lines. I loved reading Bette and Chris' story and cant wait to read more by the author.

**I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own and not influenced by my source.**

Having just finished No Regrets the day before, I was better prepared for the type of story I was going to get with Moving On. I knew it was going to be more of a slow burn romance story, with the romantic passion coming on in the end. And that was exactly what we got.

What I enjoyed about this novel was the alternating perspectives and their character development. I liked watching these two form their bond of friendship first and getting to know each other. I understood why they liked each other and how their feelings developed. It felt like that was missing in the previous books.

Again, the story is more about them growing as people and coincidentally finding love along the way. I liked both Chris' and Bette's stories. I felt like they both had ample character growth and it was really nice to get some closure on Chris' story.

It's a quick, cute read and by far the best of the series!

After finishing No Regrets I was glad to see that Chris would be telling his story. We get a small introduction to Chris in No Regrets and he is portrayed in that book as a moody and mysterious friend to Ryan and Liam. In this book we learn more about the failed relationship he had with Cami’s roommate, Annie. Chris leaves the dorms after he and Annie breakup/Annie sleeps with his best friend Ryan, and moves in with Bette, this awesome free-spirited, take-no-crap girl. As the friendship and then eventual love begins between Chris and Bette, Chris slowly comes to terms with his failed relationship with Annie, his eventual forgivness of Ryan & Annie, and what love is truly like. Bette really helps Chris to learn to move on with her honesty, one of my favorite lines from her was: “I made mistakes, I did stupid things that could have gotten me hurt, and I went out with boys who weren’t good enough to wipe my feet. But I got through it all in one piece, and I learned from it. And even though there were more than a few tears shed, and more than one mortifying moment, I’m glad I did it. It made me who I am, and I’m glad I didn’t live for anyone else. You will be too one day, I promise.” Bette also learns too that she doesn’t have to change who she is or her convictions for anyone, including her mother! My favorite quote from this book was the tattoo on Bette that are perfect words for everyone to live by: “Inhale the future, exhale the past.”

You don't need to read the first two books in the series to understand this book and the characters. I liked Chris, he was sweet and really accepting of Bette for who she was. I loved Bette. She was sassy and knew exactly who she was. I was disappointed it took so long for her to realize that Blake wasn't the one for her and that Chris was. The time it took for them to finally get together was too drawn out and slow. I started skimming a lot after they went home to meet Chris' patents. After it took so long for them to get together, there was no real satisfaction about it. The book just ended abruptly before I could even enjoy them being a couple. No epilogue or anything. I feel like I invested so much time reading about them that I would have gotten a bit more of them as an actual couple.

I DNF at 45%. I couldn't connect to the story or the characters. That could be that it was a #3 in a series and I haven't read any of the previous versions? I found the character development shallow and the romance slow to develop. It might be for some, but not for me.

This one was better than the second in the series. But, it took soooo long for Bette and Chris to admit their relationship, I started skimming a bit around the 75% mark.

I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley for review.
