The Unseen Library

During 2009, Macmillan Books announced that Lane would be writing a series of books focusing on the early life of Sherlock Holmes. The series was developed in conjunction with the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lane had already shown an extensive knowledge of the Holmes character and continuity in his Virgin Books novel All-Consuming Fire in which he created The Library of St. John the Beheaded as a meeting place for the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who.

The first book in the 'Young Sherlock Holmes' series – Death Cloud – was published in the United Kingdom in June 2010 (February 2011 in the United States), with the second – Red Leech – published in the United Kingdom in November of that year (with a United States publication date under the title Rebel Fire of February 2012). The third book – Black Ice – was published in June 2011 in the UK while the fourth book – Fire Storm – was published originally in hardback in October 2011 with a paperback publication in March 2012. The fifth book, Snake Bite was published in hardback in October 2012 and the sixth book, Knife Edge was published in September 2013. Death Cloud was short-listed for both the 2010 North East Book Award. (coming second by three votes) and the 2011 Southampton's Favourite Book Award. Black Ice won the 2012 Centurion Book Award.

Early in 2012, Macmillan Children's Books announced that they would be publishing a new series by Lane, beginning in 2013. The Lost World books will follow disabled 15-year-old Calum Challenger, who is co-ordinating a search from his London bedroom to find creatures considered so rare that many do not believe they exist. Calum's intention is to use the creatures' DNA to help protect the species, but also to search for a cure for his own paralysis. His team comprises a computer hacker, a free runner, an ex-marine and a pathological liar.

I thought the first book in this series was heart-stopping and thrilling until I read Last Safe Moment. It was filled with action and intrigue, banter, friendship and danger.

In this explosive sequel, Kieron, Sam and Bex are sent on another mission. This time to Albuquerque. They have to investigate a string of mysterious deaths that have befallen 35 employees of the Goldfinch Institute. Not only do they have these alarming deaths to investigate, but they also need to find the traitor in M16. The stakes are higher than ever a Kieron has to infiltrate a psychopathic billionaire's weapon research lab. Will he make it out unscathed? GUESS YOU'LL HAVE TO READ IT TO FIND OUT.

I feel like this series is going to get better with every installment. I really liked the first book, but I loved this book. I loved the new mission the characters were sent on. I loved watching the friendship between Kieron, Sam and Bex develop. I adored the banter, and I loved the heart-racing, adrenaline fueled read this was.

I loved the characters. Kieron is so brave and so realistic. Him and Sam are typical teenage boys. They're realistic teenage boys. They're awkward around girls, feel like the world is somewhat against them/they're misunderstood, and they have acne! They were very realistic which I appreciate. Both Kieron and Sam are also such wonderful characters. They're brave, kind, thoughtful and have hearts of gold. I love Bex too. She's intelligent, responsible and caring.

I absolutely adore the relationships between the characters as well. Kieron and Sam's friendship is so wonderful. They support and understand one another. They're loyal to each other. They are one another's ride-or-die. The author effectively shows their close, somewhat familial bond. I absolutely love their friendship SO MUCH. I also love Bex's friendship with the boys. She's somewhat of an older sister to them. She takes care of them when she needs to. She listens to them and respects them, guides them and protects them. I love the dynamics between the trio.

The dialogue between the characters is brilliantly written too. I've read so many books where the dialogue feels stilted and unnatural - this wasn't the case! It reads like an actual conversation. I adored the banter between Sam and Kieron. They're utterly hilarious, and their witty dialogue really brings their characters to life.

I really enjoyed the plot in this book as well. It was non-stop action. The stakes were high. Although the first book was riveting as well, with this book I felt like I couldn't put it down. At some points I was even fearing for the characters' lives. I loved how this book was so intense.

The author also managed to make the book somewhat terrifying due to the realism of the problems the characters had to face. Both missions in the two books have centered around issues such as neo-fascism/racism which are quite contemporary. It made the mission even more unsettling due to its reality.

Last Safe Moment was utterly enthralling. With a high-stake mission, non-stop action, realistic characters and brilliant banter, Last Safe Moment is an action-packed must read.

I give it: 4/5 cupcakes

Special agent Bex (short for Rebecca Wilson) is assigned a mission to investigate suspicious deaths at a top-secret weapons research lab in New Mexico. However, the head of security in that company, Tara Gallagher used to work together with Bex in MI6 and even shared an office. this pushed any thought of infiltrating the company building without anyone noticing her or recognising her out of the window. With Bradley being unable to take her place due to the recent kidnapping, Bex can only rely on Kieron to take her place and infiltrate and gather information.

If you want to know more, READ THE BOOK!! ; )

I enjoyed this book as it is a thriller and also about spycraft. Both of these topics interest me as I enjoy having the ability to be on the 'edge of my seat' anywhere I am unlike movies. Furthermore, in spycraft, there will be a lot of cool gadgets and also many tactics. The cool Gadgets really interests me as I find it interesting to know what col ideas that people can come up with that may become a reality in the near future.

James Bond Jr, without all the style, entertaining for such a quick read

I thought the story line was a little weak for my liking. The language was good, and was easy reading.

Seemed to be non stop action, but I found myself picking it and putting it down a bit too easy.
