To love him means to sacrifice everything she holds dear.
Josephine Brevil has lived hundreds of years haunted by the horrors she experienced during the Salem Witch Trials. She takes great care to hide her powers, though serving a Root Brew Float laced with a magic potion now and again never hurt anybody.
The Order sends her to Massachusetts to deal with a paranormal threat, and she meets the young and handsome widower, Clarence Watts.
However, being with him comes with a cost. How can she choose between the man she loves and the magic dear to her heart?
I thought this story was going to be a quirky witch story. It is but much more. This story is a beautiful budding romance with a happily ever after. The story was beautiful and quirky. I loved it when the witch forever became a mortal to live a mortal man. I cannot express enough, the wonderful romance and .... Let's just say it is a beautiful story.

A great read doesn’t get much sweeter and charmingly romantic than Jo and Clarence’s love story. I love this story! Jo has to make the choice of a lifetime and Clarence can’t live without his sassy witch. Very well-written and deeply satisfying!
Oh my gosh, such a fun read. I absolutely loved this. Fairly clean read too. Root Brew Float has everything I adore. Ghosts. Magic. Mystery. Humor. And romance. Once again, Sydney Windward weaves an intriguing plot full of beloved characters.
I loved Josephine and her furry sidekick, Jinx. Josephine’s a bit quirky, and the kind of girl who would be fun at gatherings. Her sense of humor had me smirking ear to ear. The playful banter between her and Clarence was everything. Gosh, they cracked me up. Seamless chemistry. Not a dull moment in their dialogue exchange.
While every scene was a highlight, my favorites took place at Clarence’s place. It’s a bit haunted (Yesss!) and I enjoyed being able to picture the old Victorian house as if I was there. I’m just glad Clarence could never quite master the art of locking a door. Hehe.
Josephine’s tragic history hasn’t dimmed her sense of humor. She’s a witch on a mission and she can’t let her pesky heart get in the way. Clarence is trapped in the shadows of his past. When their paths cross, the beacon of joy that surrounds her helps him see the way out. This novella was a delightful read. The descriptive scenes place you in the story and the well rounded characters make you care and want to know how it all turns out. No spoilers, but twists are in store.
Soo different from Selkie but still kinda cute, but I need more before I decide I like her backlist - pardon me while I add more Sydney Winward books to my TBR that just never ends I'd build a staircase to another dimension with these books. I digress
The aftermath of tragedy finds us in a small town in Massachusetts with 2 people who need to heal together.
Oh and a good twist in the third act.
Plot/Storyline/Themes: An ancient which who escaped the Salem Witch Trials (not without bruise, trauma and trust issues) finds love and has to choose between her magic and finally being in love and loved. I do recall a similar choice for Mayla in Selkie but you know what, it's okay, sometimes choices have to be made.
Two Sentences, A Scene or less - Characters: Jo is a bit meddlesome but in a sweet wholesome way that moght get annoying but really hasn't just yet I relate to Clarence way more than I thought I would. He was stuck for two years because he wasn't equipped ro deal with his trauma and he waa a fraid to overcome and move on. Fear will have you rooted in place - you blink and years have gone by.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene: 🙄Boat Scene:😑What I did not like AT ALL in this book was that Clarence wanted to "convince" Jo to give up a lart of herself to be with him 🤨- I was okay with it if she came to the choice on her own nut he went from sweet loveable recluse to controlling in that moment. 🌸Flying with Clarence! Awww, cute 🐈Jinx is a good familiar. Top notch intervening little dude.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes: 🖤 “Witches live in a place that exists in between two realms. We can only visit one side for a short amount of time.”(Interesting, dimensional beings) 🖤 “He was asking her to…to give up her magic? For him? The thought horrified her. To never again be able to cast spells? Create potions? Step between realms?”(How fcvking dare you!) 🖤 “A potion didn’t need to tell her what she already knew—she was in love with Clarence Watts. But in the end, she would always have to leave.”(Lovesick witch poor thing)
ROOT BREW FLOAT is a cute and quirky, short-story, paranormal romance. This is the third book in the multi-author One Scoop or Two series.
Jo has lived over 700 years, including having lived through the horrors of the Salem witch trials. She lives in service to The Order, assisting humans who need the skills of a witch when supernatural events – ghosts, goblins, and things that go bump in the night – disrupt the normal and expected. She is only in one town for a few days, helps, and then moves on. She has always moved on, but this time she hesitates to do so…
I loved Jo and her familiar, Jinx, from the moment they stepped off the ferry.
I loved this sweet and sassy short story. Though a short story, it was perfectly paced with plenty of hints before reveals (as opposed to info dumping). The story was fun, funny, sweet, and held a promise of steam without crossing the line (lots of flirting, a little kissing, but no sex, swearing, or anything else you wouldn’t want your teenager reading).
I liked this so much that I hunted through all of the books offered on Booksprout to see if the other authors were offering their editions. Sadly, no. If they are as much fun as this one, I would recommend them as well!
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: ROOT BREW FLOAT Series: One Scoop or Two #3 Category /Genre: Paranormal Romance, Short Story Recommended for: 14+ due to magical content Grammar/editing: received as an unedited ARC / errors excused Received from: Sydney Winward
I grabbed this title, looking for a little fun in the sun. It’s part of the One Scoop or Two series by The Wild Rose Press. I’ve read several in the series and loved the lighthearted beachy feel. I was intrigued by the idea of a witch in the mix.
In this story, Josephine Brevil is a witch on a mission. She lands in a town in Massachusetts to remedy a magical disturbance. She’d been to Mass before during the Salem witch trials! In this novella, the witches dwell in another dimension of sorts. They can use their magic openly, fly on their brooms, and live long lives. They can’t have commitments in the other realm, our world.
Josephine takes a job at a local ice cream shop and adds small magical elements to her customers’ orders. Many find the ice cream gives them good vibes, great memories, and the spark of a romance. She likes the town, but she really admires the man who lives in the house she came to cleanse.
Clarence Watts is mourning the loss of his fiancée who died years ago. He blames himself. But Josephine knows better. There’s more than a fluttering romance here. The tale is perfect for the prompt, as Clarence’s injury from the boat accident has a huge part in the story. But I won’t spoil it. Read it yourself.
The book is only seventy pages, but there’s oodles of story. Ms. Winward crafts an amazing world with just a few sentences. I was fascinated by the witches, their purpose, and their loneliness. I wanted to learn more about how their jobs worked, how their spells help the mere mortals, and why they had to keep everything separate. You know I’m going to stalk Ms. Winward’s books looking for more witchy tales!
What fun dialogue this book had! Josephine had been around for hundreds of years, and yet she spoke just like any modern person would. I appreciated the fact that she kept such a close eye on current language trends during her visits to Earth. It made her feel relatable, especially when she was speaking to humans who didn’t realize she was a witch.
There were several plot threads that were left dangling by the final scene. While I totally understand why some them would be saved for future reference in possible upcoming sequels, having so many of them mentioned but not resolved in any way was a little frustrating for me as a reader. It would have been helpful if even one of them was brought to its natural conclusion.
The banter between Josephine and Clarence was truly delightful. I can’t say they liked each other very much the first time they met, but I did sense that they were pretty intrigued with each other. They had much more in common than either one realized in the beginning, including painful pasts and uncanny abilities to ignore social conventions on purpose in order to see what would happen next. Not only did this provide plenty of opportunities for them to get sucked into amusing conversations together, it also made me wonder when their mutual dislike of each other might evolve into love.
This is the third installment in a series. It can be read as a standalone work.
I’d recommend Root Brew Float to anyone who is in the market for something lighthearted.
This is an unusual, quirky novella. Our heroine, Jo, knows she's being sent by the Order to a new town to help someone or something with a magical problem. The Order knows where she needs to go, but now she’s the one who has to figure out what she needs to do. Her normal way of determining what the problem is doesn't work. Soon, she meets a man at his rundown Victorian. It seems like he is the one who needs a little magical help.
It’s funny that when I initially saw this cover, I thought it was going to be a paranormal cozy mystery. But actually, it's more of a very grounded paranormal romance (no shifters or vampires). Despite the somewhat cartoon-like book cover, it actually is more serious than it seems. Themes include choosing to live your destiny and not somebody else's idea of what that should be, hard choices, and following your heart. The book is a relatively quick-read novella. I felt like there was more of Jo and Clarence’s story that needed to be told, or perhaps the reader just wanted there to be more. All in all, though, it was still a good story.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
In these troubled times it is nice to fall into a world where Happy Ever After is a real thing.
When the Order sends Josephine Brevil is sent to Stockbridge MA on a mission, it should be like all the missions that she has dealt with before, come in find the source of the problem, fix it and leave, easy right? nahh where would the fun be in that!
This is not bad, it is a very much a novella, a short story., i felt a lot of it could have been expanded on, it was very wham bam thank you maam However the writing was good, the characters were somewhat well fleshed out I did not understand the references to "That Room" and I would love to know more about The Order I wonder if Sydney Winward plans to expand on this I think it could be an interesting world to explore, this would be a great jumping off point for that
If your looking for something to take you out of the real world for 30 minutes this will do so and it has the Happy Ever After that we are all looking for,

Root Brew Float by Sydney Winward is a super fun paranormal romance. I am a huge Winward fan, so I wasn’t surprised I loved this one. Josephine is the magical, strong heroine I love in all Winward’s works. The system of magic is unique in this book in that witches belong to an inter-realm Order who hold all the cards. Witches are at their beck and call, with the threat of losing their magic if they refuse to move on. My favorite part was Josephine’s desire to fly on her broomstick and overcomes the fear instilled in her during the Salem witch trials.
Clarence is the love interest with a haunted house and the target of the Order. I loved his instant love for Josephine and his breaking out of his shell for her. Clarence has a limp (and a cane) due to a boating accident and a load of self-confidence issues from it. He goes on a healing journey to win over Josephine who – the best part – loves him for who he is. No magical “leg fixes” only acceptance and inclusion. Swoon!
I highly recommend this feel-good paranormal romance that promotes inclusion, acceptance, and romance.
Romance can change everything. A witch who has lived for several hundred years, Josephine's job is helping people rid themselves of paranormal beings. She goes from town to town, never staying in one place long. Clarence needs her help, so she goes to do what she does best, never expecting to develop feelings for him, changing her life as she knows it. Very cute little story. This is the first book I have read in this series. Although I had no trouble following, I wish I would have read the previous books. Magic and romance, what will Jo decide to do.

I really liked reading this story called Root Brew Float by Sydney Winward because it was such a sweet story about Josephine and Clarence. Josephine is a witch who is sent to Massachusetts from The Order. She is not sure why she was sent here, but she finds a job in an ice cream store. She uses a little magic in the ice cream to make people happy. She meets Clarence when she is breaking into his house. Clarence has been affected deeply by a tragedy and never leaves his house. Josephine realizes this is why she was sent here. I loved this story. I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest opinion. It was such a great book. I loved it and I highly recommend reading it!!
Josephine Breville is on a mission from "The Order". For hundreds of years since being devastated by the Salem Witch Trials, she's devoted her life to her job. This time, though, she's found more than things going bump in the night. To blend in she goes to work dishing out not only ice cream but she spells the treats bringing happiness to the residents of the small town. And the description had me wondering where I can get some of that ice cream. Clarence Watts has lost not only his wife but his way. Living in an old victorian house that is becoming increasingly haunted. He blames himself for his wife's death and has shut himself away from the world. Together they help his deceased wife to the otherworld and along the way, they find a strong attraction to each other. There are several stumbling blocks to their future together. A disturbing family secret and an even bigger one- Josephine can't stay or she'll become mortal and lose her magic. I couldn't help but think of Bewitched with Samantha dealing with Darren. I enjoyed the characters and the fast pace of the story This is a short, sweet, beach type read, and I highly recommend it.
This author has a knack with the way that she writes, from the very first page you are transfixed to the page and the story and you keep reading because you want.to find out what happens. Josephine was sent by the order to help Clarence to close the door that he opened when his wife died in an accident that he feels guilty for; but what Josephine never expects was to have feelings for Clarence or that he would feel the same way. Awesome storyline e and characters were.Amazing i can't wait to read more.

This is a interesting fun humour story with characters that will grab your heart. Because you will be rooting for Clarence. Josephine or better known as Jo has come into town to fix something but she doesn't know what is wrong. She get a job at Lester's ice cream palor, she decided to spell the ice cream so people will remember their best memory. To help people express their feelings to another person. She finds out what the problem is but there is danger involved!! What is going to happen and to whom???
4.5 Stars. This is a short novella, but so well written that the flow is smooth and doesn’t leave any holes in the story. The plot revolves around a witch who falls for a mortal, while spiking ice cream with a little magic. The main characters are perfectly matched. Clarence needs Josephine’s help to rid his house of haunting as well as himself. There’s an interesting twist, linking Clarence and Josephine. This story is a sweet and fun paranormal romance with lots of magic. I look forward to reading more from this author. Reviewed for Still Moments Magazine.
I loved this one! So much fun and made me laugh a lot. I found myself smiling while reading this book so often and just wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next. This was a fast and clean mystery with magic and ghosts. There was also a dash of romance thrown in which I enjoyed a lot. Josephine and a fluffy Jinx make the perfect combo. They also get up to some interesting hi-jinxes with interesting results. The banter was good too and made me giggle a few times. I was hooked from the moment it started and wanted it to keep going.
Root Brew Float by Sydney Winward is a sweet romance involving an adorable witch and a handsome, disabled mortal. Funny, engaging, and a perfect summer read, this story takes place on the coast of Massachusetts where Josephine Brevil is sent by the Order to complete a job and return to the realm. But while there, she learns a few things that will change her mystical life forever. Ms. Winward has created a fun, flirty, romantic read with compelling characters.
Root Brew Float is part of the multi-author One Scoop or Two series and is a sweet paranormal romance.
I really enjoyed this short story and found the characters to be quirky and interesting. The storyline is well written, entertaining, and flows nicely from beginning to end.

This is a pretty good book. A Witchy love story. I enjoyed reading it in spite of the fact that I would have preferred it to end differently than it did. It was a bit speedy for my taste. But still over all not too bad. I will read more by this author and see what I think after a couple more books.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
This was an okay read. I enjoyed the author's writing style and the story and especially the start of the story but tend to prefer stories of more length (170+ pages as a guide) and this to me was short story length (66 pages). I received an ARC copy of this from the author at my request and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
The cover of this book caught my eye. I love stories about witches and witchcraft, and Root Brew Float didn’t disappoint. This book has it all: a sweet romance, evil that needs to be banished, and fun magic. With just the right amount of charm and spark, this is an entertaining read you don’t want to miss.
This is such a cute story, perfect for light summertime reading (or anytime, really!) Sydney Winward perfectly blends magic into the everyday world and serves us up a perfect scoop of romance. Loved it!
