Soar into the natural world of birds with this board book guide for toddlers and preschoolers.
Award-winning author and educator Cathryn Sill introduces toddlers and preschoolers to basic facts about birds, including how they look, where they live, what they eat, and how they move around. The simple one-line-per-page text pairs beautifully with detailed watercolor illustrations from noted wildlife artist John Sill.
This is the first title in the Discovering Nature series, a dependable and informative first resource for budding birders.
Cathryn Sill, a graduate of Western Carolina University, was an elementary school teacher for thirty years. She lives in North Carolina.
When she was an elementary school teacher who loves nature. When she had trouble finding good natural history books for her kindergarten class, she decided to write them.
With her husband John as the illustrator, she has created two series of nonfiction books for children.
The ABOUT series is about different groups of animals and includes 16 books. She has just completed the eighth books in a series about habitats.
I have enjoyed everyone of the Carolyn & John Sill nature picture books I have seen. It is a delight to see their beautiful works sized down and presented in such a splendid way that delights and educates young children. Each bird is identified and represents a fact about the bird or birds in general. These will implant kernels of fact and truth in their minds to later be fleshed out with more detail as they grown. As always, the illustrations are bright and perfectly detailed to bring out the beauty of these creatures. I just love these books.

Birds have lots of the same characteristics - they have feathers, hatch from eggs, have wings and bills, but they also have difference, some are big - like an egret, or small as a hummingbird, some fly, some swim, they build their nest in different places, some live in groups, some live alone. But all are important to our world.
A thorough exploration of birds in just a short board book. The illustrations are amazing - different birds on each page, identified for the reader. A child who loves birds will learn a lot of information, and will also be able to identify a number of birds, drawn in their natural habitat. Such a beautiful board book.

This is a beautiful board book that introduces young children to a variety of birds, their behaviors, and habitats and includes the species' names. Read our Bookends Blog post here that includes a pair of other bird books to nest-le in with.
This beautiful board book includes water pictures of different birds on each page as the book describes the various facets of what makes a bird. This is a nice introduction to the various parts of birds and what they do in their lives. It would be a good addition to any collection that includes board books.
A nonfiction book about birds for toddlers. The text is brief and direct. The information is interesting but not overwhelming. The illustrations are lovely but clear. A great addition to a quality series. A wonderful nonfiction board book for little ones.
If I want a board book about birds, this gives the basics! Not super fond of the illustrations but will keep this in my list of books here for future storytimes just in case.
This is a great first nonfiction book for toddlers. The text is simple and straightforward, but still informative, and the realistic illustrations make it possible to identify the birds in nature as the child encounters them. My 2 year old loves the book and looks at it almost daily.
