『希望荘』以来2年ぶりの杉村三郎シリーズ第5弾となります。中篇3本を収録する本書のテーマは、「杉村vs.〝ちょっと困った〟女たち」。自殺未遂をし消息を絶った主婦、訳ありの家庭の訳ありの新婦、自己中なシングルマザーを相手に、杉村が奮闘します。

収録作品――あらすじ――

「絶対零度」……杉村探偵事務所の10人目の依頼人は、50代半ばの品のいいご婦人だった。一昨年結婚した27歳の娘・優美が、自殺未遂をして入院ししてしまい、1ヵ月以上も面会ができまいままで、メールも繋がらないのだという。杉村は、陰惨な事件が起きていたことを突き止めるが……。

「華燭」……杉村は近所に住む小崎さんから、姪の結婚式に出席してほしいと頼まれる。小崎さんは妹(姪の母親)と絶縁していて欠席するため、中学2年生の娘・加奈に付き添ってほしいというわけだ。会場で杉村は、思わぬ事態に遭遇する……。

「昨日がなければ明日もない」……事務所兼自宅の大家である竹中家の関係で、29歳の朽田美姫からの相談を受けることになった。「子供の命がかかっている」問題だという。美姫は16歳で最初の子(女の子)を産み、別の男性との間に6歳の男の子がいて、しかも今は、別の〝彼〟と一緒に暮らしているという奔放な女性であった……。

Miyuki Miyabe (宮部みゆき Miyabe Miyuki) is a popular contemporary Japanese author active in a number of genres including science fiction, mystery fiction, historical fiction, social commentary, and juvenile fiction.
Miyabe started writing novels at the age of 23. She has been a prolific writer, publishing dozens of novels and winning many major literary prizes, including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize in 1993 for Kasha and the Naoki Prize in 1998 for Riyū [The Reason] (理由). A Japanese film adaptation of Riyû, directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, was released in 2004.

A little hard reading due to graphic and sordid nature of events. But reading about the Detective is always calming. I wonder how Miyabe can portray a person's character so well. It's very authentic and genuine. This is a person who has flaws but is very self aware, and tries his best.
