This is by far the best teaching guide for this craft.
Bobbin Lace or Tatting, is a stunning project and can be used for making bookmarks, beautiful scarfs and cushions as well as being used for trimming.
An age old craft, that is becoming more and more popular, this book has easy to follow instructions, templates and with a terrific visual format as well as written methods, it makes this an achievable skill to learn and to master.
The detail and the beauty of the techniques is amazing. The finished projects are stunning and with the variety and varying sizes something small can be managed by every beginner or advanced Lacemaker.
Easy to follow, not too short (or long), enough guidance to get you started with a few hints and patterns to nudge you along. Will not set the literary world on fire, but I don't think anyone expects that.
(Note: I'm a writer, so I suffer when I offer fewer than five stars. But these aren't ratings of quality, they're a subjective account of how much I liked the book: 5* = an unalloyed pleasure from start to finish, 4* = really enjoyed it, 3* = readable but not thrilling, 2* = disappointing, and 1* = hated it.)
I've been making bobbin lace since 1994. This is absolutely THE best book for learning bobbin lace. Well illustrated. Easy to follow. Each lesson builds on the previous. And you end up with something useful when you're done with each section.
The only downside to the book is that it doesn't include diagrams and how to read them.
HIGHLY recommended if you want to learn bobbin lace and don't have a teacher close by.
It's an important part of my lace reference shelf.
This is a short-but-not-too-short introduction to Torchon lace.
It does not set out to be comprehensive, but to get going as quickly as possible. It covers the core techniques, and does so by means of projects, rather than samplers, illustrated step by step by very clear photographs. Tips and additional information are in the text boxes that pepper the book.
Another plus is that there are several patterns for "useful" laces, including purses and scarves - this alone may make it worth the purchase, though obviously the patterns are not too intricate, in line with the technical content of the book, while still looking good.
It may be most useful for those wishing to try out bobbin lace and figure out quickly whether they like it or not - however delving deeper into the art will require another book.
This was a great book to get me started on my Bobbin Lace adventure. Patterns for bookmarks were included. Nice pictures were featured to help illustrate the stitches.
