When a stream of rainwater carries Levi's boat to where Polly is playing, she starts a puddle fight but as the water begins to disappear, they must work together to prolong their fun.
A delightful book showing the fun that can be had on a rainy day. Love the onomatopoeia used in the text and the gorgeous illustrations that compliment it. The ending shows the young (and old) readers that when you work and play together everyone has more fun.
After the Rain is an adventurous story about making the most of a rainy day. Children will relate well with wanting to play in the rain and trying to manipulate the ebb and flow of the water. This story also shows the value of cooperation in order to accomplish something bigger together. Excellent story! Highly reccomend!
What a fun story! AFTER THE RAIN perfectly captures the excitement of playing outside when it rains really hard, and the initial disappointment when the rain finally stops. The words are bright and full of fun sounds that kids will love making with whoever is reading it to them. And the pictures are larger than life, full of energy, matching the tone and story just perfectly.
With themes of nature, imaginary play, rivalries, and working together, this book is sure to be a hit with both kids and adults.
I was so fortunate to have a chance to read an ARC copy of this book, and can't wait for it to come out in March!
Nothing says childhood like puddle stomping! The rain has finally stopped. Levi can’t wait to do some puddle stomping and get a little wild. He is having a blast until Polly comes along and ruins everything. This is a timeless, lyrical tale of the joys of childhood and learning the work together. A great read for the classroom or bedtime.
Levi is overjoyed when the rain stops and he can put on his gear, grab his boat, and go outside to play. He joyfully splashes in the puddles, watches his boat float along in the water, and rescues it from the gutter grate. But then, a neighbor comes over and disrupts his play. A water fight ensues until they come to a resolution and figure out how to cooperate and play together.
Why you need to add AFTER THE RAIN to your book collection: o This is a perfect example of a true picture book where the illustrations tell part of the story along with the lyrical and poetic text. o The book is fun to read aloud with verb phrases like “Water rushes, roils, ripples” and “Blast! Boom! Bash!” o Children often have conflicts when they play and these two diverse characters figure out how to work out their differences without adult intervention. o Who doesn’t love putting on rain boots and jumping into puddles? o This darling read-aloud will prompt discussions about how to resolve problems and get along with others.
Rainy day fun means splashes and sailing for Levi and his toy boat. Polly prefers stomping and guarding the river: no boats allowed! But rainy days don’t last forever, and as water begins flowing into the gutter, can these two work together to preserve the fun for the both of them?
After the Rain is a fresh and fun new look at rainy days, with a reminder that playtime is better when shared together. Rebecca and Simone combine rhymes and action words into the nostalgic images of flowing water and falling rain, whisking the reader into the fun.
The language in this book is simple and quick-paced, perfect for storytelling with younger kids. There are plenty of verbs and fun, descriptive rain vocabulary words for toddlers. With its bright colors and animated characters, After the Rain is the kind of book to pull out again and again in celebration of rainy days.

There’s something magical about that moment when the rain stops, the sun comes out, and rain puddles abound. Kids don rain boots, grab toys that float, and head outside to play. AFTER THE RAIN captures the joy of imaginary play using water that “rushes, roils, ripples.” Levi’s boat floats in the water and races in a river of rainwater. But when Polly says, “My river. No boats here!” a battle begins. However, the water is disappearing down the drain and the kids soon realize they must cooperate to save the water. After building a dam, they have a lake to play in! The colorful illustrations depict a great sense of movement – both the kids’ and the water’s. The text is filled with super fun language, especially onomatopoeia, that reads aloud beautifully. This delightful picture book is sure to inspire kids to get outside and play in puddles!
Levi discovers the magic of the flowing water after the rain stops until Polly stomps into the story. By the end, the two learn that building together is the most fun after the rain. Highly recommended for read alouds. Children will delight in Rebecca Koehn's word play, "Water rushes, roils, ripples" and Simone Kruger's bright, detailed illustrations.
Very sparce text. Two-four word sentences. Might be good for a toddler read aloud. Though this could be good for ages 4-6 for vocabulary exploration. Great words used like: overflows, ripples, plunges, dodges, halt, truce
Simple text and great illustrations make this such a fun book for little ones! Fun language to read aloud and a great story shows how teamwork is better than just one.
An incredibly fun read! Koehn's rhythmic language and clever use of onomatopoeia coupled with Kruger's vibrant illustrations are captivating enough to hold the attention of even the youngest reader. And the heart of the story, the beautiful evolving friendship between Levi and Polly.
After the Rain follows a boy as he plays with his toy boat in the rain. He meets as “enemy” and must decide if it is better to play alone or make a friend. The illustrations and short sentences on each page make this book a perfect fit for ages PK-2nd grade. The author’s use of onomatopoeia lends itself to a lesson on the literary device.
Rebecca Koehn’s masterful use of words artfully leads little Levi on a nautical journey in AFTER THE RAIN. A problem arises when Polly decides to stop his fun. In the end, the two join forces and show how both can be winners. Simone Kruger’s illustrations are fun and playful, adding another layer to this sweet story.
A gorgeous book that captures the delight of playing after the rain, clad in galoshes and raincoats, as water rushes out of pipes and down the gutters.
Levi plays with his boat in the 'river' water, but becomes territorial when Polly turns up. A water battle ensues - until both children notice the water is draining away. They must then work together in an attempt to salvage what they can.
The rhythmic text rollicks along with plenty of fun onomatopoeia, and the vibrant illustrations work brilliantly with the lively text. Love the themes of teamwork, creative thinking and adaptability.
I received an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
DRIP! DROP! Koehn's clever text captures the magic of good storytelling. Her rhythmic writing floats off the tongue, creating enjoyment for both reader and listener. The comical puddle struggle between Levi and Polly shows children how to share as they learn that working together is much more fun than fighting. After the Rain is a perfect read for rainy days and every-other-kind-of-days, too.
