The Relationship Seasons Navigating the 5 Stages of Relationships

Rate this book
Whether we're seeking a romantic relationship, involved in one already, or trying to guide our children through the dating years, navigating relationships can be challenging. We often think that relationships just "happen" to us and that they will just work out or not, no matter what we do. But there is a better way. Through His prophets and apostles, the Lord has provided us with guidelines for our relationships. With such inspired counsel in mind, Matthew Richardson outlines five relationship seasons, each with its purpose, principles, and practices. These seasons include fellowshipping, dating, courting, engagement, and marriage. When we understand each season's purpose and then follow its proscribed principles and practices, our relationships will be far more successful.

The Relationship Seasons: Navigating the 5 Stages of Relationships was a life-changer for me. Matthew O Richardson, a BYU professor of Marriage and Family Living, has been teaching this for years, but I only found out about it when I saw the book in the BYU bookstore. His idea that Christ-centered relationships ought have order and develop naturally like the seasons helped me make sense of years of failed relationships. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." This books defines the purposes and practices of the five, distinct seasons of relationships: friendship, casual dating, courtship, engagement, marriage.

I thought this book was so well written. I picked it up for a couple bucks at Deseret book and am so glad I did. It goes through the seasons of dating, what is appropriate when and has some great quotes and ideas. I love that each of his kids had to go through the Richardson Dating Academy before being able to date. Great advice for those in relationships and parents of kids entering the dating stages.

It was so refreshing to see these issues discussed from a gospel perspective and from the viewpoint of a seasoned community leader and parent who calls his home a Dating Academy. I wouldn't say everything in this book goes for everyone. Think about it, pray about it. But mostly, very, very valuable advice and information here.

A good book for parents of pre-teens and teens, and someone in a dating relationship. I have only read through the courtship stage so far but have put it down for a while. It made me appreciate the teachings of the LDS church regarding dating and friendships.

I was able to hear a couple of lectures giving by the author, Matthew O. Richardson. He is wise and funny in the way he explains the different seasons in love relationships.
