“Chase your dreams and follow your heart, no matter the cost” is the call of the world today. The opposite extreme, often advised by well-meaning Christians, is to lay down all of our dreams and passions, avoiding all self-interest.
One narrative says to follow a passion, and the other says to lay it down. Both claim to offer happiness and purpose on the other side. But what does the Bible say about dreams, goals, and passions?
With compelling illustrations from Dianne Jago’s unexpected journey in creating DeeplyRooted Magazine, along with thoughtful scriptural examples, Dianne shares an honest account of how God changed her plans and aligned them with His.
As you read this book, you will be challenged to look upward instead of inward, seeing the God-given purpose of every Christian as the foundation of your “dreams.” Scripture shapes a believer’s pursuits and the gospel speaks to our passions. Instead of the one-size-fits-all formula for dream-chasing, A Holy Pursuit will help you identify whether it’s time to pursue, pause, or surrender a dream you hold.
This book is a delightful, easy read that at first glance is about our dreams. But Dianne takes the topic of our dreams, and points to the Gospel. I think scripture is what she references the most throughout the book, which to me is encouraging because if we are to point to any person, first, it should be Jesus Christ. She does quote John Piper, CH Spurgeon, Lilias Trotter, but one thing that stood out right off was all the scripture she uses. Our dreams, our life, our everything begins and ends with Jesus. Dianne makes the point that if our dreams are not first rooted in the Gospel and in Jesus then we labor in vain. At the end of the book she gives a list and says, "We are also told that His will for us is: to repent and believe in Him (Mark 1:15), to love Him with our entire being (Mark 12:30), to love our neighbors (Mark 12:31), to be sanctified, to remain pure and grow in holiness (1 Thess. 4:3-7), to do good works (1 Peter 2:15), to live in a spirit of gratitude, be constant in prayer and be joyfully content(1 Thess 5:16-18)." she goes on to say "Remember that if you are fighting for these things above, you are walking in His will." This is an encouragement, it is affirming, and is reason to rest in the Lord.
Really solid, biblical look at the topic of dreaming. A great response to the messages the world sends us about following our dreams and/or laying them down. Loved her questions to think and pray through when discerning what to do with an idea or dream. Highly recommend!
I started reading this book on a plane flying home from a secular design conference - everything in me wanted to scream YES YES YES as I read for the entire flight from CA to PA & had truth in my face for 5 hours straight. In a day & age when we are taught to throw all caution aside & pursue our dreams whole-heartily, this book was a refreshing kick-in-the-pants. Every chapter I read I had exhausted my highlighter even more & kept thinking, "HOW can I get all my friends to read this book too!" (I received this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher)
All around us are messages to encourage and spur us on in our dreams. I am a huge dreamer by nature so I was always tuned into these messages. These messages can be great, but if not filtered through the gospel message, they can steer off course from what God truly desires for us and our dreams. We must place the gospel over cultural advice.
In my pursuit of my dreams God asked me to press pause on a very dear dream to pursue something else. The dream didn’t leave my heart, so I began to get confused. Should I be pushing harder even though I am sensing God saying slow down, change course a bit? I felt guilt, I worried I was lazy, I wondered if something was wrong with me if I wasn’t following my dream to it’s full potential. I was confused by all the business advice. Over this last year God has taught me so much about dreaming and what it looks like based on the gospel.
I wish I had this book a year ago to speak these truths into my heart. Dianne’s words in A Holy Pursuit reassured me everything God has been teaching me this last year is true based on the gospel. It reassured me that we have freedom in Christ to lay down, press pause, or pick up a dream and that if God steers us in ways that are countercultural based on all the dreaming advice that is ok! It isn’t lazy, it isn’t wrong, it is actually the right way to dream. This books points lifts off false guilt/confusion and points us in the direction of peace and rest in our dreams.
Through personal stories and Biblical truth Dianne teaches us the correct way to dream. This book is very much needed in today’s culture to help sift through all the advice out there. Because at the end of the day, it isn’t about succeeding in a dream it’s about loving God and others more. She so beautifully teaches us how to dream in a gospel centered way that honors our first callings first. She inspires, provokes thought, and gives us confidence as we lay down, push pause, or pick up dreams in a healthy way! I would recommend this book to any dreamer out there!
Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book is a fantastic read for Christian women! I have to admit, as excited as I was to read this book, I wasn’t sure how much it would apply to me since I’ve never considered myself a “dreamer” or someone with big dreams. However, while reading the book I realized that we ALL have expectations for the way we want our life to go, decisions to make, and things we hope for even though they may not be considered a “life dream”. This book applies to all of those things and is backed by solid biblical truth. I especially appreciated Jago’s story and experiences woven throughout, and the 9th chapter that was very practical. This book felt like an older/wiser sister speaking truth to my heart about what is important in this quickly fading life of ours, but she does it with humility, grace, and love. Though the Christian life is not guaranteed to be easy or comfortable, we do have peace and security in our identity in Christ and Jago reminds us that is where we need to be rooted. “Christianity changes the way we dream. The gospel says that Jesus is King, and we are not. The gospel acknowledges that the path to true living is dying. The Bible reminds us that what is before us is passing away, and where the world esteems monetary gain and notoriety, we are wholeheartedly sold out for one mission: God’s glory alone.”

I was so excited to get an advanced copy of this book because I've learned so much from Dianne's writing in the past--I just knew this would be a good one. And even so, it blew past my expectations. One nugget of truth after the other. I kept finding myself relating & reveling (& earmarking & underlining).
Personally, this book has helped me to take a step back & review my current dreams/goals in light of the gospel, to re-evaluate my motives, and to retrain my thinking to look to Christ first rather than my own dreams & happiness. Which funny enough, is one of those things that you don't realize you're actively doing until it's pointed out to you.
It's so easy to get swept up in the to-do lists, the goal hitting, always pushing for the next big thing--in fact, it feels like you're behind or incompetent if you aren't. Often that results in a lot of personal struggle & doubt. So I'm thankful for this timely, sweet, refreshing, encouraging, convicting reminder to slow down, look to God and prioritize correctly. A MUST READ. Also, keep a highlighter on hand--you'll need it. :)

I got hold of an advanced copy of this book so I've been through it once and am starting on a slower and more interactive second read. I enjoyed this book because Diane’s writing voice is gentle and encouraging, continuously pointing us to Scripture - to Christ. Throughout the book, Diane offers up ways for us to deliberately evaluate our thoughts and actions. She gives actionable advice for digging into root issues and possible motives.
The first two chapters seemed a bit long to me. I agree with the premise, so I did not need the depth to be convinced about the book’s premise. I appreciate that other people have had different life experiences and might not be as familiar with similar material. I was far more interested in and challenged by discussion about maintaining proper perspective about a truly purposeful life and about how hopes can shift. I was reminded of Jeremiah 29:5-8.
Although I would not have considered myself a "dreamer," I quickly realized I still fit this category as this book addresses the foundational desires of our hearts, whether that be big ambitions or smaller desires that can all become idols in our life. Dianne expresses profound truth with clarity and sincerity, and doesn't shy away form deep and challenging topics. The gospel is the focal point from cover to cover. Dianne's ultimate desire for her readers to genuinely know God and His word, and thereby continue to find the direction for their lives and dreams, is so evident in her writing and makes this book a gift to read.

This book was SO GOOD. I got an advanced copy and anticipated agreeing with the author, so I thought it would be a quick read, but the depth of Biblical teaching and Gospel truth in it gave me much to consider as I read, paused, reread, and put down the book to ponder the content. In a world of “you’re so great, you deserve XYZ, reach for the stars” that always makes me feel like I’m missing something (why don’t I actually FEEL great and why does this thing I deserve make me feel the need for something MORE?!) this book gave me *actual* hope for a good future by reminding me why I exist and was made for — relationship with God! Concrete, biblical words for a confused generation of Christian women. Dreamer, doer, or somewhere in between — MUST READ.
I love this book ! It is filled with scripture and applications for our lives! I love the Chapter headings particularly “When God becomes your genie and your dreams become your God! How many times do we do this without even realizing it? I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking God’s leading in their life! Dianne shares her struggles in her desire to be a .... she is transparent and honest with her struggles! Anyone who has aspirations of doing big things for God or to be used of the Lord should read this!
In today’s world you are bombarded with the feelings of being inadequate, unless you pursue your dreams. Do something that makes YOU feel good. It’s all about self. In this well written book the focus is taken off ourselves, and focused on scripture and following after God. This book is the perfect read for anyone desiring to aline their plans with God’s and what that looks like.
This book is a much-needed message in today’s culture. With ubiquitous messages that encourage people to “follow your heart and reach for your dreams no matter what”, it can be challenging to have the right mindset about pursuing our goals in a Biblical way. Dianne Jago reminds us how to do just that by masterfully weaving together the Story of Scripture and her own life experiences. This is a must-read for anyone who has a dream and a desire to glorify God through that dream.
WOW. What can I say about this book?! I don't know if I could adequately detail how much I needed to read this book! I starting reading it with minor hopes of encouragement, honestly, but God knew what my heart needed and that was to refocus on the Gospel in areas I have been lacking.
Dianne Jago does an excellent job portraying what true happiness and fulfillment of dreams should look like in a Christian's life. Through the lens of Scripture, she emphasizes and reemphasizes the significance of the calling of the Christian and how that must first and foremost be our pursuance in our day-to-day living, whether we are working inside or outside of the home. She then challenges her readers to ask themselves questions given by God in His Word, regarding His will, to see if their dream is one worth pursuing or laying down for the sake of Christ.
As a SAHW and a SAHM who has laid down dreams yet still has dreams, this book was exactly what I needed to remind me where and why God has currently placed me in this season of life. Whether single or married, barren or child-rearing, widowed or retired, this is a book you need to read! I cannot recommend it enough.
I was thankful to have found a book that uses scripture as a means to think through our dreams. It helped me process my desires in light of the roles God has already placed in my life, and gave me a framework for how I could best use my gifts to serve him.

Are your dreams, goals, and passions put on hold? Are you uncertain about the future? The Gospel and God’s bigger story should change the way we make our decisions.
Dreams, Goals, and Passions
What are your dreams, goals, and passions? More importantly, do they align with God’s? In A Holy Pursuit, Dianne Jago shows how the gospel frees us to follow and lay down our dreams.
Dianne Jago is a military wife and mother of three residing in Pensacola, Florida. As the founder of Deeply Rooted Magazine, she is uniquely qualified to write this book.
Deeply Rooted Magazine is all about glorifying God in womanhood. They encourage, inspire, and equip women to be deeply rooted in Christ alone. This book shows how God changed Jago’s plans and aligned them with His.
Free to Follow Your Dreams
In just over 200 pages and 9 chapters, Jago gives a Biblical understanding for what it means to love and dream for the glory of God. In exceptional detail, she gives Scriptural support for her claims.
She exposes lies that we believe, she gives tips for fruitful Christian living, she clarifies what Jeremiah 29:11 actually means, and she gives us the freedom to fail.
My favorite sections were on comparison and selfish ambition, found in Chapter 5: The Fruitful Dreamer. Chapter 6 on “You Are Not Filler” is worth the price of the entire book.
Free to Lay Down Your Dreams
It is clear that Jago is influenced by John Piper and his teachings. As I mentioned, in Chapter 6, she shares a funny yet relatable story of how we often make idols out of our Christian celebrities.
After laying the necessary groundwork, Jago starts sharing directly about Deeply Rooted Magazine’s beginning. I found her story captivating, and I loved reading every behind the scenes detail.
But Jago doesn’t come off as prideful or knowing it all. She admits she does not know what the future holds for her ministry and business, but she affirms that it is in God’s hands.
Gospel Freedom
This book caused me not only to re-examine my ministry and business plans – but my life plans. I was greatly helped by Chapter 8: Discernment for Dreamers and the provided questions for serious reflection.
There is not a single answer for dream-chasers. We are all gifted in different ways, and God calls us all to do different things for him. We must be discerning, and A Holy Pursuit is the perfect help.
This is now the first book I will recommend to entrepreneurs, influencers, and business owners. There is wisdom for the hard-working. There is real rest for sleepless dreamers. There is hope and freedom for the hustlers. And there is Good News for searching souls.
I was provided a free copy of A Holy Pursuit but was not required to write a positive review.
Incredible read about how the Lord can sanctify our dreams and goals – if we’ll let Him
In her new book, “A Holy Pursuit: How the Gospel Frees Us to Follow and Lay Down Our Dreams,” published by B&H Publishing, Dianne Jago’s 208-page book outlines how we can properly discern whether our dreams are of the Lord, or just our worldly wishful thinking.
“In all our dreaming, we must seek His will for our lives and ask that He grant us the spiritual sensitivity to identify a clear direction for the complex decisions we face,” she writes (page 53).
What really stood out to me is Chapter 5 where she talks about “Tools for Fruitful Christian Living (page 118).” She highlights Bible reading, prayer, and the church, and how they are most important for our spiritual growth – and should take precedence over our own pursuits.
“The dreamer who remains rooted in the Word understands that a neglect of the Word is essentially a neglect of God,” she writes (page 119). “She (or he) does not want to be tossed back and forth between her (or his) dreams and what she (or he) thinks may be God’s will.” (Extra parenthesized words mine.)
While this book is primarily tailored toward our sisters in the Lord, we guys will get so much out of this great read. It will also help us all allow the Lord to sanctify our individual dreams and desires according to His will, and not our own.
Moreover, what readers will get the most out of by reading Jago’s book is not only that she offers sound, biblical advice on discerning between our wants and the Lord’s will, but also that this book is saturated in Scripture, which she uses as a framework for pursuing godly dreams.
Bottom line: The holy pursuit of God is knowing His will, His ways and His heart. We are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to us. We are to trust the Lord with all of our hearts, and not lean on our own understanding, and in all our ways, acknowledge Him, and He will be sure to direct our path.
Although Jago does quote John Piper too much, she provides a biblical gauge for helping us know which dreams to go after, which ones to view differently, and which ones to let go of as we submit to the Lord’s counsel, and allow Him to sanctify our hearts, minds – and dreams.
I gave Jago’s book a 4 out of 5 stars.
Full disclosure: In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255, I received a copy of this book free through B&H Publishing. My opinions are my own and I wasn’t required to write a positive review.
This book was perfect timing during a season where I have felt it on my heart to encourage women in their calling. So many live this life wondering how they fit into the grander scheme of things. I had never heard of Dianne before and so, was looking forward to getting to know her through her book.
I hadn't even reached the first chapter and I was already highlighting and underlining! Right away, I knew this was going to be good and something I would be recommending to many other women. The book isn't geared towards just women, however, I lead women and that is who I am called to minister to so, I am recommending it for women.
Dianne explores all the different facets when it comes to following and laying down our dreams. It's okay to dream. God created us to dream! The tricky part is how do we decipher what is always going to be a dream and what is it that He is calling us to. What things hinder us? What things slow us down? And how do we overcome those? Dianne does a beautiful job using scripture to support her theology in how God designed us uniquely and how the power of the Holy Spirit empowers us to discern.
Within the pages of this book, we learn how the gospel can change the dreamer. We learn that there is a bigger picture that God knows about and, while we may have all our plans written in succinct formation, God doesn't follow those plans necessarily. This should come as a relief!
Dianne shows us the struggles the dreamer has like comparison (oh man I struggle with this one!), discontent (as an ENFP, I struggle with this too!), and selfish ambition. If I'm going to be real, there have many dreams squashed by God because my own agenda was on the line and, not His. She directs our attention to consult with HIM with our dreams and I just love that.
Perhaps my favorite chapter was the one called You Aren't Filler. I won't give it away too much because you need to read it yourself. Each chapter has a quote at the beginning that is so fitting. This chapter began with this quote: "Our work for Christ is not passive; it demands sacrifice, planning, energy, wisdom, and passion. Nevertheless, all of that effort is futile unless Christ remains the source of strength powerfully at work in our inner being." - Dr. Glenn Jago Dianne does a brilliant job of writing in a relatable way, intertwining her personal story while continually pointing us toward Jesus, the source of all wisdom. The gospel truly does free us and, just like in Dianne's story, can change our plans and align them with God's in a beautiful way.
You would do yourself a disservice if you did not add this book to your library!
Dianne Jago wrote this book with passion, telling truth in love and sharing her experiences with dreaming and walking out those dreams—or not—with God.
This book reads a little more formally than a lot of books for Christian women I’ve read. I think a large part of that is that it’s so full of spiritual “meat.” It took me longer to read—not a bad thing by any means—as I processed, wrestled through, and considered her words. This isn’t a feel-good, light and easy read. It’s a gospel-driven look at purpose, calling, and dreaming.
Dianne presents thought-provoking ideas and asks deep questions. She encourages you to take the time to consider them, too. While I agree with the overarching theology in her words, there were a couple of times I wasn’t sure I agreed with a statement/her conclusion (over fairly minor things, mind you). I don’t think that’s a bad thing either! I was able to consider what I agreed with/disagreed with, why, and then pray over it. In fact, this is one of the things Dianne encourages you to do in the book—test what you believe/think/are doing against the Word. I think we need messages that challenge us to consider our thoughts/beliefs and take them to the Lord. This book did this for me and I appreciate it!
I underlined a lot in this book, especially toward the middle and through to the end. If you’re a Christian and pursuing a dream of any kind, this could be a beneficial read for you. (I’ve had to learn some of the same lessons as Dianne in my journeying with Jesus in building and leaving businesses. It’s good to know what might be lying ahead for your own path by reading her experiences!) I’d just encourage you to approach it with an open heart, ready to wrestle through some things, and take your time going through it!
I absolutely loved this book, so much that I was kicking myself for not starting it earlier.
I have read so many books lately (each with their own benefits) that have dealt with trying to accomplish your dreams and powering through any obstacles. As good as they each are, I was left feeling like my efforts were never quite enough.
It was so refreshing to read a message that focusing so intently on my dreams is really not good for me. Instead my focus should be on following God first and then all of the other parts of life will fall into place (although it may look very different than what I expected).
"When our identity is firmly rooted in Christ alone, then our dreams become an extension of doing all things for the glory of God, and because we desire His will above our own, we can entrust Him with our dreams and find contentment in whatever it is that He has planned for us." A Holy Pursuit, pp. 78-79
One of the other things that I appreciated so much about Jago’s message is that she doesn’t ever imply that if you follow a formula God will automatically bless what you are doing. Instead she makes it clear that what we should be pursuing is “God’s success” and that doesn’t always look like success in the world’s eyes.
If you need a book to challenge you and encourage you, not only in the area of life-long dreams or finding your purpose, but it growing in godliness, you definitely need to read this.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.
As a believer and a woman, this book is a must read. Dianne has an amazing talent for writing, I truly had a hard time putting this down! This book is not only lovely on the outside, but the inside is full of conviction, laughs, and solid Biblical truths for today's young and/or well-seasoned believer. I am really excited to hand copies to the college ladies and young moms in my church family. The way Dianne is able to speak to a modern minded (think Pinterest, Instagram, etc....) Christian woman, but also NOT sacrifice truth is truly needed and lacking in today's Christian literature. I will definitely be re-reading this as a tool to help set my eyes on Christ as I navigate my "dreams" (and life in general) in our "do-whatever-makes-you-happy" saturated culture today.
"When our self-worth or sense of fulfillment stems from our ambitions, then we can be sure we've misplaced our identity. However, when our identity is firmly rooted in Christ alone, then our dreams become an extension of doing all things for the glory of God, and because we desire His will above our own, we can entrust Him with our dreams and find contentment in whatever it is that He has planned for us." - Dianna Jago (page 78-79)
**I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of the book from the publisher. However, all these opinions are my own, and it was a true eternal blessing to read this book and I will be reading it again and again.
I was expecting this book to be good, but I was delighted to find that it exceeded my expectations. I discovered Dianne Jago after somehow coming across Deeply Rooted Magazine (highly recommend!) and thought, if this is her heart, I’d love to see her write a book someday.
The premise is how do Christians pursue their dreams or lay them down in light of the gospel. The world tells us to follow our dreams, no matter the cost, and to seek our purpose and fulfillment there. But what does God have to say about all this? Dianne interweaves her own personal story with the gospel of Jesus Christ and how that changes our dream chasing. She isn’t afraid to share the truth about the importance of a strong relationship with the Lord as the foundation of our lives. Instead of a sprinkling of Bible verses throw amongst the pages and calling it a Christian book, this book dives into passages of Scripture and gave me a deeper love for our great God. I appreciated the inclusion of questions to seek discernment in whether or not God is calling you to pursue a dream. So practical and wise.
I think everyone could benefit from this book, and I’m not a huge dreamer. So much wisdom and truth from a woman who clearly loves her Lord.
Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
when i first received the email about this book from the publisher; i anticipated not liking it. i am unsure of why i felt that way from the beginning because i know, love and trust deeply rooted magazine. i think my apprehension was because of the topic at hand. i have seen a lot of women’s books tackle topics like this terribly. they are usually full of fluff and loosely about Christ. there is typically a worldly thought wrapped in some Christianese language, but this book did a beautiful job basing their argument in Scripture; not just personal experience or psuedo-christian beliefs.
i will say that you have to push through the first two chapters because they are more personal stories but i found that they were very relatable for many different life stages.i could see a twenty year old and a forty year old relating to her stories. the third chapter was my favorite in the book. she did a solid job pausing, the normal or expected trajectory of the book, and made sure she defined the Gospel. the Gospel is usually assumed and not clearly stated in books. i loved this time to reflect and get back to the heart of Christianity. she did this again when taking a few pages to talk about how to truly study the Bible and keep up from reading self-centered.
overall, i thought this book is needed. it is well written and gets to a deeper level than most christian women books.
This book from Dianne is like a breath of fresh air, or a million breaths of fresh area. It is so easy in our world today for genuine Truth to be suffocated by all of the titles and messages of "You can be anything", "Just follow your dreams" "Put yourself first so that you can then take care of others". Dianne's message of both pursing and laying down your dreams in light of the Gospel is one of humility, freedom, and hope.
I didn't know how much I needed to take in all that she has to share about her own journey. As I worked through each chapter, I was exhorted to look to Jesus and put him first, and yet the pages are filled with grace. It is rare to find a book so filled with Scripture instead of cute quotes and that is exactly what A Holy Pursuit is; a rare gem. I'm walking away from this book feeling encouraged, enabled, and equipped with practical tips instead of overwhelmed and inadequate in my personal life and in my hopes and dreams. Most importantly, it is obvious that Dianne's dream was to proclaim God and his glory over her own and I'm thankful for her voice of Truth in today's world.
This is definitely a book that I will gift and recommend again and again. I know I will find my own way back to it for years to come. Please get your hands on a copy of this now!
Because Dianne's message is so counter-cultural (even among evangelical Christians), I so appreciate her courage in sharing it. I gave the book a rating of 4 stars because the message is really good and so very true! God made us for his own glory, and as a result, he is Lord over our dreams. We must bring our dreams to him, and we must be willing to follow him if that means laying down a dream, pursuing a dream, or pressing pause on a dream. I appreciated that Dianne made this challenge so very clear in the book. While supporting my husband through higher education, a handful of Christians asked me when I'd be pursuing "my" dreams, and I found it frustrating and confusing. The Lord has used marriage to change my dreams and future, and it's not a mistake. The Lord has been so kind to give me peace about the dreams that I've had to lay down, and there has been such joy in embracing the work that he's called me to today.
On a more critical note, I would give Dianne's writing a rating of 3 stars. The book was a long read and at times, I felt like her writing wasn't as concise or as focused as it could have been. As a result, I found myself a bit distracted. However, I know that Dianne is young and that this is her first book, so grace abounds!
I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of the book from the publisher.
At the end of our lives, what matters most is not whether or not our dreams come true but whether or not we get to spend an eternity in the presence of God. We will not carry our successes, job titles, and achievements with us to hang on the wall of heaven. We will carry how the Gospel shaped us.
Dianne Jago illustrates her passions and dreams and how it shaped her in the gospel. The disappointments and how true successes looked like in light of God transforming her. It is in the disappointments that God uses for us to dig in deeper with him. In prayer and in his word. Our passions can look differently in the beginning than what they do in the end. God uses our passions and dreams to reveal himself to us and in the process increase our faith.
I appreciated her applying the gospel to how we compare ourselves with others. She writes that comparison manifests itself in one or two ways; either we develop a spirit of pride or of insecurity. God does not desire pride or insecurity because it forces us inward instead of outward . We cannot love others well. Our dreams and passions can easily turn into a idol of worship and security that it is not meant to be. The study is grounding work of the gospel. Highly recommend.
A Special Thank you to B&H Publishing Group and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
“A Holy Pursuit” is definitely a God-given, timely word for us as women who face constant bombardment by social media and culture telling us we need to listen to our hearts, pursue our personal dreams and practice self-care for true happiness and prosperity. While this book is filled with practical advice on how to wisely and thoughtfully pursue our dreams and accomplish our life goals (whether personal or professional), “A Holy Pursuit” especially inspires the reader to approach personal goals and dreams as a lifelong journey toward holiness that can only be found by listening to the heart of God—the only One Who can make our dreams come true. A gifted writer, wife, mom and successful businesswoman (“founder of Deeply Rooted Magazine”), Dianne Jago’s Holy Spirit-led book is packed with Biblical teaching and wisdom shared from her experience of pursuing her dreams through a closer walk with God. “A Holy Pursuit” will be a great tool for anyone who wants to be sure that her hopes and dreams in life are founded and pursued first and foremost for the glory of Christ. This timely book is not a one-time read; it is so packed with practical, on-point words for our Christian walk that it will be a book you will want to read and reference often as you pursue your dreams and hope to become the woman God has created you to be. For all ages, this book is a must read! (I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of “A Holy Pursuit” from the publisher).
This book was a tough one to put down! Dianne Jago beautifully penned her heart, soul and longings for her fellow Christians in such a way that grips and convicts. This is the way women ought to be building each other up! Not with empty, aimless and emotional pandering; us women are warriors for Christ too and we deserve theology and Biblical wisdom just as much as the wonderful men of God do. Her words are a refreshing call to recalibrate the modern-day Christian's perspective on seeking individual purpose while still keeping our Heavenly Father top priority. She breaks it down in such a way to effectively help the reader examine herself or himself and find where the hiccups are, while providing hope and reassurance through the Gospel, edifying words of scripture, and real plans of action to grow towards God, no matter where we are on our dream journeys. I seriously love this book and highly recommend it to everyone: old and young, men and women, boys and girls. We all want purpose and direction and so it would be a real asset to any one of God's children, alongside studies in Holy Scripture. Thank you for blessing us with this work, Dianne!
In a world that is constantly making empty promises of fulfillment found in pursuing our dreams above all else, Dianne Jago reminds us of a far more powerful truth that is based on the foundation of gospel.
I believe that this book steps out into a space where other Christian authors haven’t gone yet. Dianne beautifully presents a contrasting view of our passions & pursuits than the world portrays. She boldly shares the truth of scripture and how we often can warp it to help encourage our own pursuits instead of pursuing our first calling— Him.
It doesn’t matter what stage of life you are in, I firmly believe that this book is a solid reminder that people of all ages can be encouraged, convicted, and challenged by.
Honestly, one of the best books I’ve read in awhile! I’ve already recommended this read to many of my closest friends & family, and certainly will continue to do so. I’m so thankful to Dianne for listening to the Lord’s leading in putting into words the the truths He laid on her heart. I truly believe this book in the first of it’s kind, and I’m so thankful for the truths it taught me!
A Holy Pursuit by Dianne Jago was the first book I have finished reading in at least a year. I really enjoyed it because I am at that stage of life of wondering if I have done anything worthwhile or left any legacy. It is about following our dreams biblically and being willing to lay our dreams down if they are not in line with what God wants for us. But it's much more interesting than that, as she shares her life story, what she had to let go and what new dreams God had for her. The world today has a much different idea and so did she for a while. This book should reach everyone, men and women, especially in today's world and what we worry we might have to sacrifice. It is not your typical "self help" book, it is based on God's word and uses bible references often. I have many highlights in the book but what first interested near the beginning me was "Yes, we strive to change the world. But we let God define the pace in how He uses us to do that, which might be slower than our culture has patience for." I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of the book from the publisher.
Familiar with the depth and Gospel truths found within the pages of Deeply Rooted Magazine, I expected to enjoy this read, and fully trusted I'd be met with Biblical insight. That being said, I somehow anticipated - and, as a new mom of twin babies, maybe even thought I needed - a quick read that could be easily digested in the midst of daily busyness. I realized rather quickly that this book would take more than a few hurried moments to take in, and A Holy Pursuit was a well-worth-while read. Throughout the pages, Dianne explores the context of scripture, rather than simply referencing verses as a means of supporting popular or feel-good opinions, equips readers with thoughtful considerations for discernment that meet you where you're at in any season of life, and offers a rich reading experience with personal reflections of her own journey.
This book offered relief from the pressure to do it all. Combating the world's me-centered messages with the freedom that is found in living for Christ, A Holy Pursuit will remain on my shelf as a reference for many years to come!
