Women are entering the national and international arena more than ever today, from political campaigns to corporate boards to entrepreneurship, and their success is showing. Statistics show that when women lead countries, those countries are less apt to go to war. There is also a positive correlation between the number of women on corporate boards and greater profits. Women entrepreneurs have also been shown to generate higher revenues and create more jobs than male entrepreneurs. In She Is Me, veteran journalist Lori Sokol, PhD, introduces readers to thirty-five women hailing from all walks of life who have successfully utilized qualities like compassion, empathy, introspection, and solidarity to create change and transform lives. Through interviews with women including Gloria Steinem, Billie Jean King, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Leymah Gbowee, readers will come to understand how these traits, which have long been considered soft and weak in our patriarchal culture, are actually proving more effective in transforming lives, securing our planet, and saving the world.
This is a book that celebrates women who are making a difference in the world. Dr. Sokol interviews women leaders, activists, culture changers and others, and shows us how their lives and contributions are improving the world.
If you're looking for inspiration in these dark times, I suggest this book.
She is Me profiles 35 diverse women making a difference in the world. Each night I would read about a few of the women and, giving a nod to the popular children's book, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, I began to fondly refer to She Is Me as my personal Good Night Stories for Rebel *Women* book. What I found fascinating about the book's set up is how the author connects the different issues these women are working on to her own life. This personal connection deepened the profiles for me, showing me on an intimate level how the work of many is connected to us all.
There are famous women in the book, like Gloria Steinem, Leymah Gbowee, and Billie Jean King, but the real fascinating part is getting introduced to so many women I hadn't heard of before. Women who are out working to make a difference across the globe and who every night inspired me through their efforts.
She Is Me - How Women Will Save The World by Lori Sokol PHD was incredibly informative. I minored in gender studies in college and this book was a refreshing reminder of how much work that needs to be done and how much work is being done in the world on the gender equality movement, women's rights movement and the trials we face. I felt empowered throughout listening to this novel. Lori interviewed 20+ influential women about their work as well as their back stories as to how they became as strong and powerful they have. This book was well written, descriptive and detail-oriented, and very impactful.
