N.K. Leem, you have destroyed my soul 10x over again. The Shape of Nightmares is a high adult fantasy. It is a true masterpiece and I love it even more than the first book 'Fractures.' I honestly can't help but compare some of her characters qualities to those in Lord of the Rings. I even expressed to Leem which characters I thought of while reading her book. I'm not giving spoilers of that discussion.. all I will say is "ALL HAIL RIEL." <---Badass female character alert.
I connected well with all of the characters in this book, even the new ones. Thaleon,Lyris, Riel, and Dawyn continue to be among my favorites. I attached myself to the new ones just as quickly as before. I mean I wouldn't mind a spin off about some scary Theoden-esk characters?! *Laughs hysterically but also, deadly serious.*
I am a slow reader but I've been up reading The Shape of Nightmares since 0730 and finished it at 1640(4:30), but I couldn't put it down. There are creatures in this book that were unlike those I have ever read about. I love how original this story is. How she created another type of monster that isn't the stereotypical. But even though she included giants and dragons she was able to weave them into such a masterpiece.
I was nail biting (okay it was more like gif sending Leem) the entire time I was reading. To see the character development from 'Fractures,' was a scary process. I worried what might happen to the beloved characters I had latched onto from before. Leem managed to destroy me several times in the process, then build me back up. You will hurt from this but you will be made tough. *Crying brb*
Overall, I am adding Shape of Nightmares to my list of favorite reads for 2020. I highly recommend this sequel!
