Lawrence Karrier is the first to see the beauty while out on his morning run. A solitary thin cloud drifting down from the mountains and settling into the lake, like nothing he has ever seen before. Later in the day as the local factory empties and the bar fills up, the spectacle of a hundred such clouds against the evening sky beguiles the whole town.
That is until someone is unfortunate enough to touch one.
After a night of horror, the people of Gossamer Falls have to pick up the pieces and try to move on. What will they do with the now rock hard cloud formations strewn all over the place? And what of the white liquid that seems to rush around inside each one? Tourist season is almost upon them and without the dollars that brings the town is doomed.
When townspeople start acting very strange, things begin to get very much worse for everyone.
Oh, that’s pretty, a cloud. Oh, wait…what’s that hungry and deadly inside the cloud. Yeah, it’s that kind of book. I like the author’s work and with Kindle Unlimited it was easy to check out his latest, a tale of small eponymous town and the terrible things the clouds bring there. In a way, it’s a continuation of Rampike, both books are standalones, but the events of nearby town of Mercy are frequently mentioned. In Rampike, there were killer trees, this is more along the lines of the author’s take on arachnophobia. Creepy, crawly, murderous. Doesn’t take long to get into the business of killing or being killed and then, just like that, it’s a survival story with the odds stacked heavily against the small town denizens. Very much an action driven tale, some nice characters, but no real standouts, just enough to sustain the story, lots of deaths, but a fairly moderate amount of guts and gore, considering. The resolution is fairly standard for this sort of thing, utilized frequently for collective mind creature features, and fairly quick. The entire thing is quick, in fact, Douglas’ books tend to speed by, no matter the page count. This one took maybe 170 minutes or so. The author is versatile enough to switch up genres and I seem to prefer his historical mysteries to his ventures into horrific pastures. Somehow the former come across more intricate and interesting with more likeable and certainly more developed (although maybe that isn’t entirely fair, since he’s had books and books in the series to develop them) characters. The frights Douglas dishes out are fun, but there’s nothing special about them, they are just mindless quick fun reads. A lot of clichés are being utilized, the sudden romance, the heroical saves, etc. The writing is somewhat above average for, say, a regular Kindle freebie, but that’s about it. Now his Dolocher books…those are good. But it seems no matter what you chose to read by the author, you will be entertained. It’s just a matter of how much.
Mr. Douglas’ books are not my normally preferred genre; I’m more a paranormal romance fan. But after reading The Dolocher I became a big fan of his writing. I really enjoy how great he is at describing the environments (world building) and how well developed the characters are described. It’s easy to root for the protagonists and wish nothing but ill for the various antagonists. This is what draws me to his writing. I find myself pulled in and look forward to discovering the environments he’s written.
Gossomer Falls is written from different POVs, both friend and foe in the storyline. It tells of the different priorities that residents of Gossamer Falls have when things go awry in town. How some look to only further their own ambitions and desires, while others genuinely want to aid their neighbors. I kept finding myself trying to guess what the clouds really were. This book does a great job of showing you what’s going on and not just telling you. I found myself emotionally pulled in and anxious about how it would all turn out. This is just another excellent example of Mr. Douglas’ creativity and great ability at storytelling. When I need a mental palate cleanser from PRs his books are a great one. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes the suspense/horror genre.
Evil comes in beautiful forms. Lawrence Karrier is the first to see the beauty while out on his morning run. What a wonderful intriguing novel this was!! Absolutely wonderful plot and story line that is so engaging from the very start. Intriguing and beautiful world building. Wonderful well fleshed out characters that I enjoyed following through the story. Really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi tale and makes you think about the inoccent things we see everyday! How does the town survive? Grab your copy today to find out. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
After listening to this story, I'll never look at a cloud the same way. True horror story of beautiful white clouds that hold a deadly horror that attacks a small town. This was a fast paced action and survival story. Many characters you find yourself wanting to beat the odds and characters that turned into "monsters" because of the clouds. This book had it all with a high horror factor. Will anyone survive??? Guess you'll have to read it to find out.
This story takes place in Gossamer Falls, a small mountain town, somewhere in the sixties (it's not specified in the book but there are enough clues to support this). When the town is hit by strange, beautiful but lethal clouds of unknown origin, the mayor wants to keep a lid on the matter in order not to risk the tourist season. An amateur team led by the sheriff goes up in the mountains to find out what, why and how these mysterious things are. Meanwhile, the clouds have solidified and started bursting, releasing billions of deadly and aggressive spiders that swarm the town. This is simply a great horror story. It starts out as a mystery with the strange clouds killing several people but the story becomes darker and deadlier with every page. It's hard to put down as you always want to read just a little bit more. I'm not afraid of spiders myself, luckily. If you are, this book will not help you. It's a horror story and that includes an awful lot of dead people that die in very unpleasant ways but the writer refrains from turning it into a blood- and gore-fest and manages to write the book in a tasteful civilised manner I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest review
This was a perfect spooky story. A small mountain town discovers some strange clouds descending on their town. Of course people are curious and investigate. Just remember never touch strange clouds that seem to attch themselves to objects. People were touching them & the results unleashed an impossible enemy that you can't escape. People were acting strangely as well. As citizens tried to flee they soon realized it was impossible to leave town with trees blocking the road. This story kept me turning the pages for sure. Nice horror story.
Beauty can be really scary. When Lawrence sees a candy floss cloud floating above the lake at Gossamer Falls he has no item what the next few days will bring. What starts as a story of small town America in the 1950's with a town bully, a crooked major, the all American sheriff and the town beauty, rapidly becomes a tale of mystery, fear and horror, with a terrifying enemy that there seems nowhere to hide from or escape. A great storyline, The writing is superb, capturing the atmosphere, tension and terror of the situation. Some great shock moments. Loved the characters, real with flaws and courage. I will be watching the skies for any candy floss clouds. The narration was good, the accent suited the story, just lacked a little range to distinguish the characters. I received a complimentary copy from StoryOrigin and am leaving a honest voluntary review.
This is the first book I've read by European and I have to say I was not expecting a lot of what happened. What I expected to be a sinister tale with supernatural overtones leaning toward paranormal became something much more ... tangible. The fear factor weighs heavily on very real phobias with just enough of a supernatural gloss to make you glad that what happened in Gossamer Falls could never really happen in your town. Could it? The characters are easy to get attached to and the pacing is quick. And just when you think you can anticipate what someone is going to do they go and do they tell you to hold their beer. European writes with delight in his carnage.
I recently received an offer of a review copy of Gossamer Falls, not knowing what to expect story wise (I didn’t read the description) other than I needed a book to listen to I loaded this story in my phone and spent the day listening to it. To say I was blown away by this story is an understatement the longer I listened the more invested I became in the story as well as the characters. Mr. Douglas has created a story that puts your emotions through a rollercoaster ride. While this was my first story by Mr. Douglas, this will not be the last. The narration by Peter Kuhn is excellent and brings the story to life.
Wow what a great story. It reminds me of a great old time horror or suspense thriller that just builds and builds. I really enjoyed reading this story as I tried to guess what was really going on and what the clouds really were. Pus the other mystery. I liked how the story was not just told from one point of view but from many in the town. It made the craziness even better. And all the good and bad characters were amazing and easy to love/hate. Just worth reading. It was a great book that kept me reading to the end.
European Douglas returns to the genre he does the best in this novel. Told from the viewpoint of different characters mysterious white clouds fall on Gossamer Falls and contain a horror that take over or kill whoever touches them. A fast moving and very enjoyable novel that resolves all the characters in the novel. I hope Mr. Douglas continues to write more horror novels it's been too long since Rampike. Highly recommended.
This is another great thriller from the author that is unpredictable. The story starts out with “clouds” that basically attack a town but then turn into so much more. Mr. Douglas does a great job with writing an original story that keeps you from wanting to put the book down. For anyone who has read the author’s other books, there may even be some Easter eggs thrown in to look for to make the story a little more enticing.
This is a good story, fast-paced and entertaining, with a lot of action and a lot of the usual tropes of the genre.
Its better feature is the descriptions; this author always manages to put us in the setting of his stories with his words, and that's something I really appreciate.
The narration, though... it's barely mediocre. The volume is unbalanced, there are sectors with background noise, others with an echo-y quality, and the narration itself lacks emotional depth. :(
I received an advanced listener's copy of this book. I am so glad I did! There is something about a book that can twist such a primal fear that really gets me hooked. It was so dark and twisted that I didn't just want more but needed more! I highly recommend this to all readers of horror and supernatural books. I will be picking up a physical copy of this book soon to ad to my collection and check out the rest of European P. Douglas' other works.
This book is one of his best so far it will hold you from the start to finish.Gossamer Falls is about to be invaded by clouds sounds tame but that’s just the start, this pager tuner will keep you hanging on every word till the end could not put it down.
I have read this book as an arc and have left this review voluntary.
A gripping thriller! This book is incredible! Kept me turning the pages hours after I should have gone to sleep!!! I love books that keep me guessing and riveted. I couldn't wait to get back to it and pick the story back up. Some books just hit you right between the eyes and add a kick to the gut for good measure...this is one of those books! Loved it!
What a great horror read. It roped me in and I couldn't put it down. I don't read a lot of horror any more but this one was so worth it! There is a certain something I won't be looking at in the same way anymore but I'm not going to give away any spoilers, you're just going to have to read it for yourself.
Mind blowingly creepy! This was an absolutely terrifying story and I LOVED every page! I kept looking at the front cover to make sure who the author was because I felt I was reading something by Stephen King! PHENOMENAL!
One of European's best books. Difficult to choose which of his books are the best as each one is unique. Gossamer Falls gave me goosebumps. The storyline was fluid, as always and kept the reader enthralled. This book is unforgettable.
Another great book by European Douglas!! Very reminiscent of Stephen King...grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go til the very end. I can’t wait to find out what’s up next.
This review will contain minor spoilers for the novel Rampike by author European P. Douglas at the very end. Feel free to skip that, though it will help clarify what I’m trying to say with the rest of the review.
This review will be referencing another novel by the same author, Rampike, a supernatural thriller. I’ve searched on Google, Amazon, Goodreads, and Audible and I can’t find any surefire proof that these two novels are connected. However, there’s mention of a city and some events from Rampike that tell me they likely share a literary world. You need not have read Rampike for this story to make sense and I barely remember it. Had there been a hint of their connection, I’d have listened to this book much sooner so Rampike would be fresh on my mind.
Reading my review of Rampike, I found it incredibly slow. While numerous plot threads of Gossamer Falls are damn near identical to Rampike, I didn’t have that issue this time around. It was well-paced and interesting all the way through. A second note from my Rampike review is that I noted how it’s similar to the movies The Mist and Tremors. I didn’t make that connection while listening to Gossamer Falls, but it remains true for this story as well.
It’s really difficult for me to not constantly bring up Rampike in this review. Gossamer Falls feels like Rampike with a different coat of paint. It led to me being able to predict the ending, which did sap some of my enjoyment of it. Though it also has me wanting to listen to both books back to back and has me curious if there are other novels with a similar premise set in this literary universe.
The narrator is excellent. I recognized his voice from when I reviewed A Shaded Room by European P. Douglas. A big complaint of mine with Rampike was the narrator. So it was a breath of fresh air to hear a familiar voice and a great narrator to boot.
At some point in this novel, the characters mention a town named Mercy and a man-made of wood. I don't remember the name of the town from Rampike, but the man-made of wood was 100% in Rampike. Which led to me finding absolutely nothing when I went searching if these two stories were connected. The plots are essentially mirrors of each other and those references to Rampike lead me to believe they're standalone books set in the same world, but not being able to find any confirmation anywhere is annoying. As I find myself wishing to read more books set in this world. I find it fascinating and want to see how things unfold. The characters bring up a second city that was destroyed and I can't help but wonder if it's referencing another novel set in the world.
NOTE: This copy was provided to me free of charge as a digital review copy. The opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone, I was not paid or requested to give this book a certain rating, suggestion, or approval.
Gossamer Falls (Evil Rising Series), my sixth read from author European P. Douglas. A well-written, entertaining read. 7-hours 32-minutes/338-pages. Kind of a follow-up to Rampike: A Supernatural Thriller (Evil Rising Series). Peter Kuhn's narration adds to this supernatural thriller's enjoyment. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll definitely be reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Very clever play in the title. SPOILER; if you’re arachnophobic then this story will give you nightmares for weeks. This is a sequel to “Rampike” but it’s filled with new characters the only connection being it is located several miles away from Mercy, the town in “Rampike”. Definitely notches up the creep factor and the body count.
Fast paced horror ensues when deadly clouds descend on the town of Gossamer Falls. Plenty of reviews have covered the plot so I won't go into details, however this was a great read from an author I've never read before but will definitely look out for in the future.
