Jusko! Di bale nalang po 😅

Man, I struggled with this book, not because it’s in Tagalog; rather because the characters were tedious, the narrative is uncompelling, and the writing is unsophisticated. Such a shame as I had high hopes for this one. Promising concept, crudely executed.

Leaving such a low rating to a book written by a Filipino Author.

But there is nothing I could say that wilk talk this book up. Sobrang disappointed tlaga ako. That's all I could say.

Ikaapat na entry para sa #AkdangPinoyAugust2024:

🌟 [O] Read a book by a Filipino author that is written in your OWN LANGUAGE 🇵🇭

Para siyang fish out of water trope (literal) na predictable dahil doon. Reminds me of #LegendoftheBlueSea x #WonderWoman.

Kaya nakakalungkot.

Fun Fact, or Unfan Fact. A sad reality in our local publishing.

There is "itutuloy" at the end of the book so it is the first book on a series. First book on a series should have a strong foundation because this is where the characters are introduced and where the world-building and the conflict presented; hence those things are not well executed in this book. I wish Sirene and her world has been introduced even more. This book is tediouuuuuuuus and the characters mostly Nikolas talk long-windedly without making very much sense.

I had high hopes for this one because a long time ago I read ILYSINCE1892 on Wattpad and I loved it plus my friends like Binibining Mia stories. Nevertheless, I will still give the rest of the story a chance and I hope I will like it.

(I guess this is the only thing that Nikolas said that makes sense)

It it got me out of a reading slump. It's a story about mermaids which is not a completely new story but it is really engaging and what I like about this is it's also historical since it mentions stuff about the American and Japanese war that had happened in the Philippines. Overall a really good read 3/5 star read.

For me, it was one of the books I've enjoyed so far. But It has been a while since I read it so I may have missed some parts I didn't like but one thing I remembered, I can't let go of the book and even drew Sirene b'cos I love mermaids.

this book is about mermaids(it was my dream to be one when i was younger lol) and the setting is 1941 during the japanese era in the philippines.

in this story, yung lalaki, which is si nikolas, ay makulit and mahangin. he likes talking high about himself(pero he is not rude or smth) and not to mention he is a common thief.

so sa lugar nila, sa coron palawan, may legend abt mermaids. people there believe(mostly old ppl) na there are mermaids that guard each cardinal directions(north, east, south, west).

in the legend, it is said na lidagat is the dyosa of the ocean and death. lidagat has 5 daughters which are mermaids pero her first daughter died bc she fell in love with a mortal. so the eldest is amatheia, tagapagbantay sa northern part of the philippines(batanes), has gold hair and is the most respected as she is the eldest. the second is maira, has green hair, is smart and likes to prove her opinion, guards in the southern part(sa mga isla ng jolo). the third one is doreen who guards on the east side(catanduanes), she has blue hair and is a great manggagamot. lastly, sirene, the youngest. she has silver hair and is known to be the prettiest among her sisters. she guards the pearl on the west side(palawan). the mermaids usually guards the pearl only every full moon bc this is when the pearl shows itself to mortals. andd every full moon ay nagaalay rin sila ng tao sa mother nila so they basically have to kill every month.

(grabe ang haba)

nikolas is poor and has a lot of utang to different ppl plus hinahanap siya ng amo niya kasi sabi ng anak ng boss niya, pinagsamantalahan niya raw ito, which is not true kasi according to nikolas, graciela(daughter of his boss) is fat and still likes to play with dolls despite her age which is abt the same as nikolas. nikolas is in his early 20’s btw.

as i said, he has a lot of debts kaya when he and his cousin was drunk, he decided to get the pearl on the ocean. so things happened that night which he can’t remember the next day kasi nga he was drunk. next thing he knew, nagpapasalamat sakanya yung mayamang parents ng isang batang “niligtas” niya.

after non, a lot of things happened pero skip na yun lol basta pinuntahan siya ni sirene at binugbog at pinapabalik yung pearl kaso naibenta niya sa iba so they went on a journey to find the pearl

so ayun di ko na inexplain yung iba kasi sobrang haba na HAHAJSHAH. i recommend this book especially sa mga mahihilig sa fantasy and historical fiction. this book still has typographic errors which is sad kasi pinublish na siya nationwide pero maganda pa rin naman.

naguluhan ako sa story maayos yung simula pero sobrang dragging afterwards (to the point na i was skimming and skipping pages) parang paikot ikot lang? sa huling kabanata lang nila nabalikan yung mismong main problem ng story tas anticlimatic siya for me :((
