In the chaos of war, not all heroes shine. Some must rise from shadows to claim the light.

As the youngest son of the greatest smith of the fae, Curuthannor should be aspiring to the forge. Instead, he would rather wield a blade than craft one. When the high elf king commissions a powerful enchanted sword requiring iron found only in the subterranean goblin mines of the Shadow Realm, Curuthannor seizes the opportunity to earn a place in the smithy that doesn’t require a hammer. But when dark elf treachery interferes, the lives of his entire family could be at risk...for the high elf king is unmerciful and will not suffer disobedience.

Especially from his own daughter.

Lhéwen is honored to be the only handmaiden selected to attend the high elf princess on what she believes is a diplomatic delegation to the dark elf king. She doesn’t realize it could be a one-way trip. While the princess forges an escape from her father’s ruthless will, Lhéwen is trapped in a foreign land. Betrayed and alone, Lhéwen discovers it is her own quiet power that may free—or doom—them all.

For when the pen fails, the sword will take its place.

Legend has it, I was born with a book in my hands. When I was a kid, my mom would ground me from reading in order to get me to do my chores. To this day, I can readily ignore the real world in favor of the imaginary one lurking between the pages of my current addiction. My dad — also an avid reader — introduced me to Tolkien in my late elementary years, and I never looked back. I love escaping to worlds where magic and monsters are real, especially stories with kick-butt heroines and dangerously attractive heroes.

Despite my voracious book appetite, I didn’t start creative writing until I was working as a number cruncher in a big accounting firm. With an hour plus commute by train every day, and a demanding left-brain occupation, I needed a mobile creative outlet. A pen and paper are about as mobile as it gets! As the pages began to fill, I quickly moved onto a tiny laptop, and a writer was born. Now I get to create my own fantasies!

I currently live in Southern California with my wonderfully supportive husband, two daughters, and a ridiculously energetic dog.

I read Forged in Shadow for SPFBO 6 2020 as a judge with The Fantasy Hive. You can read our full review here: https://fantasy-hive.co.uk/2020/10/fo...

Here’s my summary;

Forged in Shadow revels in the realms of elves, magical swords and political manoeuvres which is both intriguing and highly imaginative. I feel with some more depth, and further developed nuanced characters this would have captivated me more than it did.

I tend to gravitate toward stories where the protagonists aren’t doing what they should be doing. They aren’t toeing the prescribed line. Maybe it’s because, in some way, on some level, I can relate to that. I was supposed to go to school and become a nurse. Instead, I ended up an author and an editor. This is much more my speed, but I spent my entire life growing up hearing about how I was going to go into nursing, and the world needs nurses. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I just do not have the fortitude for such a career, and I’ve found my happy place editing and authoring. The disappointment of my parents, father specifically, was keenly felt.

I’ve felt it. I understand it. I know it.

So, when I started reading this book, Curuthannor stood out to me right away. He’s the son of the greatest smith of the fae. He should be aspiring to take after his father, preparing to be a smith just like family dictates. Instead, he wants something else entirely. He wants to weld the sword. He wants to fight. He wants the spray of blood and pain. The division here between what a person should want, and what they actually want, was very well done. While it doesn’t dominate the book, it was realistic enough for me to read these parts, this tug-of-war between what he wants and what his father wants for him, and feel very real, very soul-keep connection there.

Soon, things start roaring along. The king has commissioned a sword made from metal only found in the subterranean goblin mines of the shadow realm, and Curunthannor, seeing his chance to go on a quest, takes it.

As one would anticipate, nothing ends up as simple as this. Soon he finds himself at the center of a web of intrigue where no decision is a simple one and everything has unpredictable implications.

The other major plot thread is told by Lhéwen, who has her own quiet kind of power. Her plot thread is full of political intrigue and the dynamics of shifting loyalty as she, a seamstress, learns she has the potential to change absolutely everything, if she so chooses. Lhéwen took me a bit more time for me to warm up to, but once her storyline really got going, I was completely enchanted by her, and by this very different aspect of the world than is presented in Curunthannor’s storyline. While not being in power herself, her place next to all these powerful people gives readers an interesting perspective into the machinations at play here that we would otherwise lack.

Soon, the storylines of Lhéwen and Curunthannor intertwine, and these two unsuspecting individuals learn the fate of realms, plural, sits on their shoulders. Both characters are pushed out of their comfort zones, and forced to make decisions that may be uncomfortable, and may have ramifications far beyond anything either of them anticipated. It was grand to see how both characters start out on relatively equal footing: unhappy, yearning for something else, set on a certain path. Then, as events transpire, things shift and they both end up being so much more than they ever thought, with the fate of entire peoples hanging in the balance.

The question of loyalty, to self and to others, in a lot of ways, is the core of this book, and I loved how Haskell danced around it, making me look at it in different ways, in different lights.

The setup here is intricate and well balanced. This is a complex world, and in Forged in Shadow, we really only see the setup for what will certainly be a sprawling, multi-layered conflict, with both sweeping vistas and plenty of nuance and detail to keep it all in perspective. The conflict between shadow and light is just being set up in this book, and I can see from the way the author is setting all her pieces on the gameboard, it’s going to be grand indeed, and told from the perspective of well-crafted characters I actually care about who have to grapple with world-altering high stakes.

The prose was very well done, each phrase carefully chosen and written in such a way they brought the world to blazing life in my mind’s eye as I read. The characters were multi-facetted, and the fact that author managed to genuinely make me care about who I was reading about made me feel personally invested in what was happening in this book. I could feel Haskell’s passion for her story, which is important to me. If I can tell the author loves the yarn they are spinning, then it elevates the entire thing to a whole other level.

Forged in Shadow is an epic adventure in every sense of the word, kicking off a series that is certain to be just as grand, just as sprawling, textured, and nuanced as the best epic fantasy out there. This is a world steeped in fantasy, and filled with magic, where decisions, even the smallest ones, create ripples that will impact entire societies.

This, dear reader, is epic fantasy with heart.

I love the two main characters, Curuthannor and Lhéwen! Both of them start out on what should be a straightforward journey, just trying to do their jobs. But they’re both dragged deep into a maze of intrigue and lies and betrayal that will test their loyalties and their courage.

This book does a perfect job with the different points of view, showing how differently things look to different people, and letting the characters draw their own conclusions about the intricate web of secrets that drives the story.

Megan Haskell weaves intrigue, betrayal, and lies perfectly together, driving the nine worlds inevitably toward war. A gripping tale of the reckless destruction wrought by the powerful, and the bone-deep bravery of those who seek to stop them.

4.5 stars.

I loved the story and political manoeuvring. Curuthannor and Garamaen in particular were excellent characters. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

My one complaint is I feel like the book was a little longer than necessary. There were a couple times when I was like, "okay, hurry up, I'd like to see something other than scheming for a while." I was ready to move on to actual actions and events rather than just the build up to those actions.

But overall this was excellent. I loved the world and characters.

This was a well-crafted, fun, and fast-paced fantasy story. The setting is a fascinating blend of Norse and typical fae concepts, artfully woven to create a very interesting setting. In many ways, the world the author builds is as much an element of the story as the characters themselves. The magic systems are also interesting, as they give each of the races primary abilities that make the inevitable conflicts and confrontations engaging and realistic. Haskell has done a great job of giving us characters that we love and root for, as well as those that we despise and hope get what’s coming to them. They are realistic, relatable, and full of emotion, conflict, and warmth. A great start to this series, I’m looking forward to reading its successor.

Curuthannor’s father, the greatest elven smith, has been tasked with forging an enchanted sword for the High Elf king. Sent out into the world to find the rare materials necessary for the blade’s forging, Curuthannor quickly finds himself embroiled in a dark and elaborate plot.

Lhéwen, seamstress to the High Elf princess, is more than just a member of her lady’s retinue; she is a powerful enchantress herself. She finds herself a pawn in the games of her narcissistic mistress, her enchantments weaponized to be used against her own people. But when Lhéwen finds herself the unwilling engineer of the trap that has ensnared Curuthannor, she realizes there may be no way for her to escape. Soon, Lhéwen and Curuthannor find themselves at the center of a net of intrigue, where the fate of two realms and the lives of their loved ones hang in the balance.

ONE SPECTACULAR ADVENTURE!!!
Sensational! Satisfaction is an understatement, you get it all with this action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, nailbiting, block busting bombshell, blasting this little gem into a hissy with a mind-blowing culmination. Maneuvering through terrifying trials and torrid tribulations, noting the shocking twists and wicked turns, testing our characters in ways they could have never envisioned. The characters are authentic and original with qualities and traits that blend into genuine relatable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and colorful descriptions so rich and lively, they balance and flow perfectly. Remarkable job Megan, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.

I am totally in love with the Sanyare world, being a huge fan of The Sanyare Chronicles. So, getting to know it's beginnings has been fun. Rei's adoptive parent, Curuthannor, had some exciting experiences as a youth. Reading about his adventures in forging the sword that the egomaniacal King Othin commissioned was his family's job, but procuring the materials was his. Having to go to the Shadow Realm to do so was where it all began. And what a beginning!

Going backward is often difficult for me. I don't mind a prequel or 2, but starting way back as a "sister series" can be problematic because I always feel like I've already moved past that so I don't really care.

In this case, however, Megan has done a remarkable job of making me become invested in the characters who preceded Rei. It actually turned out to be quite interesting how the 9 realms came to be here, on this planet, and how they interact with each other. I found it fascinating to watch all the earlier people, like King Rindae and Prince Aradae, Princess Faeliel (Othin's daughter), Prince Daeturion (Othin's son), the ill-fated sword, Thulentur, and of course, Garamaen, the Sanyaro.

There is a lot of intrigue and courtly machinations that lead up to the world that Rei grew up in; certainly enough to build a spinoff series! And while I found a bit too much description in this one, I chose to overlook that since first books, even first books in spinoff series, usually have a lot of backstory. And while I don't like a lot of description, I always allow for it in first, and sometimes even second books of a series, depending on how long that series intends to be. So I'll let it go for this one and just say this: this was an excellent start to a sister series, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about the world before The Sanyare Chronicles. I really really love that series, so finding out how they all came to be where they ended up is promising to be fun.

Well done, Megan Haskell! Well done, indeed! I am definitely looking forward to book 2.

This was an ARC copy, and my review was in my own words and of my own volition. As always.

This is my first time reading this author, and I devoured every page.
The plot, sub plots, characters and world building is fantastic. The way the characters arcs are woven together made it truly a wonderful book to read. I love a fantasy story that has complexity and is more focused on character growth and the journey they are on.
Definitely want to read more from this author!

I read this as one of the six semi-finalists chosen from a batch of 30 by the fantasy-hive's judging team in Mark Lawrence's self-published fantasy blog off.

I enjoyed the world Haskell built with is different realms of elven kingdoms and their somewhat tyrannical rulers. The complexities of diplomacy and etiquette resonated with some historical examples and there were definitely some bad guys (and girls) that the reader quickly learned to love to hate.

This was a solid opening to a series. Set in a medieval-era fantasy realm, the main characters are elves (of varying statuses and races), although there are other Fae species appearing and contributing to the world.

The world-building was very well-done. There is ample description, and I found it pretty easy to envision the world and the action, but it never interfered with the pace of the events. The pace was, likewise, very well-executed. This was a longer read, but it didn't feel that way as the action moved along very well. There isn't much in this novel that is unnecessary to the plot development.

The characters were very well-developed. There were definitely some characters that I wanted to know more about, but since this is the first novel in a series, I anticipate that they may play larger roles going forward. I did feel that a couple of characters were a touch flatter than I would have liked: one had a major impact on the plot, but wasn't in many scenes, so it's forgivable, while the other played a larger role and I just wished for more nuance in personality. I did find that the major characters were well-developed and had blind spots and flaws. I think there's room for more development, but given the complexity of the plot and the number of characters, as well as the knowledge that this launches a series (so it's likely the author has reserved some additional developments for future entries), the level of development on display was impressive.

The edition I read had a number of errors so I think this could be improved by another editing pass. Having said that, there were very few elements that hurt the development of the story, being more surface-level concerns, so this didn't impact my overall enjoyment of the novel.

I am definitely interested in reading more from this author!

I received an ARC via the author.

Megan Haskell is Exceptional !! at creating a living world with characters that are so strong in depth & emotion that you will find it hard to stop thinking about them. The introduction quickly grabs you into the heart of this storyline making it hard to look away as a simple smithy family becomes integral to this plot, all because of the demand for a enchanted sword. A princess who rebels against her father, the most powerful king in the upper realms, starts her scheming to become a part of the royal family within the realm of the dark elves. Taking with her another vital m/c character, her trusted confidant Lhéwen her handmaiden who believes princess Faeliel is more like a sister than employer. King Rindae & his sons who would not swear fidelity to King Othin therefore taking some convincing the princess has any good intentions. Meanwhile things are set into motion that will end in a war even Sanyaro the forseer cannot stop as all these family’s lives become intermingled. There is treachery, heartbreak, betrayal, death, devastation and a brewing romance in both the light and dark realms. This to me is a brilliant fantasy journey that involves family’s not listening or believing in their children, being ruthless and more interested in Power than the wellbeing of them. I immediately despised Both kings for this very reason, especially Othin who’s daughter became an inconsiderate user of anyone close to her, revealing the monster behind the facade. If you have read the Sanyare Chronicles by this author you will immediately recognise the storyline, however this was from Curuthannor & Lhewen’s POA including some new scenes and more understanding of Sanyaro & The Crossroads Inn. This is another excellent creative piece of work from Megan Heskall, a don’t miss book that deserves to be part of your collection

IN THE CHAOS OF WAR,NOT ALL HEROS SHINE.SOME MUST RISE FROM THE SHADOWS TO CLAIM THE LIGHT.
That heading says alot.
Rei,s adoptive parent Curuthannor had to procure the materials to forging the sword because he wanted to earn a place in the smithy that did not require him working the steel as he would rather fight with a sword than make it.
He travels to the shadow realm to get iron and this is were the problems arise and he puts his family at risk because he gets caught up in the court politics of the opposing realms.........
What happens next does he figure it out and become a hero as the title suggests or does the quest fail.
You will have to read on to find out and you will not be disappointed.
I cannot wait for the next book.
Great characters in a well executed story you can actually visialise the story from the detail with twists and turns ,great battles plus , you will want more.......so buy the book.

I'm so happy I started discovering more self-published/indie authors this year, cause I get to stumble upon great books like this one! It's a classic fantasy story with elves, fae, giant battles, and a big epic fantasy world. I normally don't read a lot of "classic/epic fantasy," cause a lot of times the writing's boring or they spend too much time talking on and on, but I loved the cover on this so much I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did!

I like that the book kind of ended on a cliffhanger, which isn't very common. Most people seem to want to wrap everything up by the end of each book, but I like when the story ends on a cliffhanger and leaves me wanting to read the next book immediately!

There were a few parts of the book that went on a bit too long, and a few characters I didn't really like, but overall it was a really good and I enjoyed it! Also, apparently there's a whole nother series set in the same world that I didn't even know about?!

I met this author at San Diego Comic-con in 2024 and bought several of her books. This is the first in a new series! I look forward to reading the next installments. I'm a bit new to the fae worlds and learned so much about this author's universe.

Nine realms make up the world and with that many, you know someone is going to be power hungry...we have a few different main characters that are wrapped up in one way or another in the power struggle. Cue the "why can't we all get along" line. Because some leaders are pompous and self-righteous unfortunately.

We are taken from royal elves to the workers and the help to the warriors in several realms and we even see humans in a few places as lowly apprentices. Will a princess outsmart her father? Will a handmaiden weave enough magic to bring about peace? Will a fae bladesmith craft the perfect weapon? And really, will true love win out in the end?

Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. Curuthannor rather be a warrior of the Upper Fae Realms than toil with his brothers' in their father's smithy. When his father is called upon by king Othin to forge a powerful sword; Curuthannor is charged with acquiring iron from the Shadow Realm. What should have been a simple quest turns very dangerous as Curuthannor is caught up in the court politics of opposing Realms desiring absolute power and control of all of the Fae Realms, regardless of the cost to all those involved. Filled with creativity built characters with well laid out agendas, secrets and lies that is believable. An epic battle that is both bone-chilling and shocking at same time; a roller coaster of a journey that is only the beginning. Highly recommended.

I loved the interactions. Like a pebble thrown into a lake it has rippling affects on many lives. I loved the surprises and twists. Each character and there are many are well described and have their own struggles and battles to fight. .
The world building was phenomenal.
I had no problem identifying the characters and who they were to others. POV of each. And each taking their own chapter.
Curuthannor is an interesting blacksmith. I feel he will play an important role in the future books, along with Lh'ewen and Garamaen Sanyaro. He is wise indeed.
Very well written. The storyline is interesting. Loved the action and drama.
It will be interesting what happens next.

Megan Haskell wastes no time pulling you straight into the action — political intrigue, layered world-building, and all. What’s truly impressive is how she balances dropping you right into the middle of things without it ever feeling confusing or rushed. You can tell there’s history and depth, but it’s woven in so naturally that it enhances the pacing instead of slowing it down.

And the plot? Let’s just say—how many villains can one story handle? We’re about to find out. I won’t say more (spoilers!), but the twists and possibilities are endless.

A brilliantly crafted fantasy that grips you from page one and leaves you guessing until the end. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!

I really enjoyed this book, I liked the multiple characters in this book and how they were explained. I enjoyed the views of the different worlds. My two favorite characters were Curuthannor he was loyal, brave, and cared about his family and his village. The second character that I really enjoyed was Lhèwen she was very loyal to the princess. She had doubts about what she was doing but didn’t want to go against the princess. My least favorite characters were King Othin, who seemed very power hungry. The other one was Princess Faelil, who wanted out from under her father’s control but turned on her handmaid Lhèwen when she didn’t like what she did or said.
I can’t wait to see how Curuthannor and Lhèwen develop in book 2

The king of the Light Elves is looking to unify the faerie world…under his control. The holdouts are his counterparts in the dark realms, whose king will not bend the knee to the Light Elves.
There is so much going on in this story. A smith and his family must produce the great blade for their king. A princess with her own agenda. Ancient elves that can see the future. And the rest of the faerie world.
Few “good guys” here – personal agendas and vendettas everywhere. Guess that would be expected from people who lived thousands of years – grudges don’t pass.
The worldbuilding is complex and detailed, as are the interwoven plots.
Great read.

I liked this book. The characters were well written and the world was explained and make sense. I look forward to seeing how Curuthannor and Lhéwen will fare in the future. There was a good bit of action and intrigue to the book. War is on the horizon for the Nine Realms. It does leave the story unfinished, but resolves many issues. I am looking forward to the next book.

A substantial read, but a very enjoyable one. It is a complex story told from multiple points of view, with a wide cast of characters, not all of them likeable. Set in various Elf realms, with magic and swords, and political scheming. I look forward to seeing how the future unfolds in the subsequent books.

Curuthannor, the eldest son of a line of smiths, and Lhéwen, a simple seamstress, each aet out on what appear to be simple journeys. But fate intervenes and their lives become much more tangled and their paths forward effecting so many more people than just them. I really enjoyed the dual points of view and the worldbuilding was wonderful.

King Othin starts the book with his rage and his need for power, his daughter continues the plot with her approach to moving things forward. Lhéwen follows the princess on her journey to the Shadow realm, the sole handmaiden to accompany her, she feels highly honoured to be included. In the Shadow realm Lhéwen meets Curuthannor for the first time, as Faelilel searches for someone to assist in her plans.

Meanwhile King Othin is gathering other Kings to his cause with a view to becoming King over all realms.

Treachery takes place and betrayal of trust. But some will come forward with honest intent and belief in doing whatever is needed for the best of all the races.

I liked the plot set-out for this book and enjoyed the story a great deal. I didn't like that it read very much like a Young Adult romance book at around about 7% of the way through the book (for a short while) , however it redeemed itself and pulled away from that way of writing, resulting in a very enjoyable read.

When Rindae, King of the Shadow Realm, refuses to join the King of the Upper Realm, King Othin is determined to capture the shadow realm through war. He tasks the great Hatholdammon to forge him a blade that will amplify his power and ensure he wins the coming war.
Curuthannor, son of Hatholdammon, is tasked with travelling across the realms to gather the materials needed to forge the blade Thúlentur. However, when he finds himself breaking up a fight between upper realm and shadow realm soldiers, he is thrust between the coming conflict and his life is put in constant danger as he tries to navigate the two conflicting Kings. This is worsened when Princess Faeliel, King Othin's daughter, travels to the Shadow Realm in an unsanctioned mission of her own.
Will Curuthannor and his family survive the rising conflict to forge Thúlentur? Which side will he choose to stand by, and will the nine Realms survive the coming war?
This is an amazing fantasy adventure story that highlights war, political games and ploys, loyalty, fate, and romance. The characters were masterfully written and their growth builds upon the tension in the story. I cannot wait to read the sequel.
