Maura was determined to strike out on her own. Her decision to teach school enraged Clayton, her stepbrother, and the administrator of the family's considerable wealth.
Ten years older than Maura, Clayton had always shared an affectionate relationship with her. He'd respected her intelligence and recognized her independent spirit.
But now his affection was eclipsed by fury, and Maura was at a loss to understand why.
One thing was becoming increasingly obvious. His feelings went beyond brotherly protectiveness and affection... .
Yvonne Whittal was born and raised in South Africa, the setting of most of her romances. She started writing stories at a young age, but didn't really get serious about writing until after she married and had children. She got many rejection letters from publishers, until a friend who loved romances gave her to encouragement to continue.
Very forgettable story of a spineless, leaky, jellyblob h falling for her step brother while he purposefully dangles an oozy OW before her in order to ward her off.
Heroine discovers she's in love with her overbearing stepbrother. Her bid for independence lead her to college and teaching career. Unfortunately, her stepbrother doesn't think she knows her own mind about her feelings for him, so he plays hot and cold and even dangles an OW in front of her for a few months. (He's been in love with her since she was 17)
It takes getting hit by a stack of logs for the hero come to his senses and stop the game-playing. I liked the heroine in this one - she was honest and straightforward. I liked the little side plot of the heroine helping her fellow teachers out in the romance department.

"Bid For Independence" is the story of Maura and Clayton.
Here is a tale of two hard-headed step siblings who are madly in love, but do everything in contrary. The h has an independent streak and decides to take up the job of a teacher, which the H disagrees to because he wants her to have a comfortable and luxurious life. Her friend points out that her hottie stepbro is a man MAN- and she finally starts noticing the hunk. It's obvious he reciprocates the attraction too- but when she tries to act on it- he cruelly pushes her away. The rest of the book is her literally wallowing in self pity and heartbreak while the H pushes OW at her face, only for her to realize he loved her all along. WTF.
This was a decent read. At first I thought it was going to be one of those guardian/stepbrother stories where the hero's feelings are way too obvious for there to be any true emotional tension. But then this one had a somewhat different twist in that the hero thought that it was wrong for him to love his stepsister romantically. With that twist, it became more interesting. Nothing overly exciting, but a decent read.
Initially I was a bit squicked out by the step sibling relationship. But the H was just so tortured about it himself I got over it and found it really sweet. And the h had backbone which is always nice.

nice one though the hero did not seem as engaged wid Maura as i wanted him to be. at first, he did suffer from unrequited feelings but towards the middle of the book, he clammed up and Valerie appeared on the scene. this was a sweet one, nothing more.

One of my fave MB like,ever...dont expect complicated storyline..its typical MB...but this one is like, the trademark of MB 😁...feel good read on a rainy day..jz perfect
the description was appealing but the picture is not showing the mcs' at their ages. They look too old for 21, 31 in this bk. The story began in a scene betw. them promising an interesting read and went on like that until not really an ow was suddenly brought in to serve H's purpose. She was not in this to get him, just to play her part for him, so they're just friends, will remain so?not sure. The other female was there for h's accomplishing her goal of becoming a couple with her virtual brother of almost all of her young life. The story had me interested in the scenes betw. the mcs. not the other couple's. H's arranging to deliver a bright red mercedes to her and the ensuing result was a highlight scene to me. Think that That episode was a turning point of their relationship. Not going back to re-read it, but in the distant future.
Decent read... Some angst with conflicting emotions and guilt on his side for falling for his stepsister that he still sees as sister (even though he loved her for years), whereas she got over that issue quite quickly (i liked that). She was stubborn, decisive, independent, smart and went after what she wanted. He caused fights and arguments with her to hide his feelings, and seemed at the same time to have hell of a time staying away from her. But when he brought OW into play to ruffle her, they were so convincing together that she clamped up in her inocence and insecurity and then was decent enough to wish for his happiness. And then.... Lets just say that they got theirs hapily ever after... together
