Vivendo Thelema: Um Guia Prático para a Consecução no Sistema de Magick de Aleister Crowley

Rate this book

- Richard Kaczynski, autor de Forgotten Templars: The Untold Origins of Ordo Templi Orientis e Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley.

Once upon a time, I threatened to write a review about a book where I told people to throw away every book they owned on the subject of Thelema and buy the book I was reviewing. There are a lot of books on magick in general and Thelema specifically that are utter rubbish. And I do means lots.

But, here, David Shoemaker pops out with Living Thelema and takes the cake, the field, the storm, the whole kit and kaboodle. Separated into three sections, David takes us on a journey through the whole foundation of theory and practice, pulls back the curtain to reveal some of the broader ideas on the Thelemic path, and wraps up with some practical advice on a number of real world concerns.

In the first section, there is some of the most basic concepts of Thelema explained in a simplistic manner but with a mature voice that neither speaks down to the reader nor waters down the material to the lowest common denominator of the intended audience. Common myths of the Holy Guardian Angel, True Will, sexual magick, and even meditation are explored and exploded with a sense of clarity and a lack of sensationalistic nonsense that preoccupies lesser works.

The second section talks about various concepts of initiation, the formula underlying much of the doctrine of Thelema, and touches base with many different aspects of the practices of the A∴A∴ The subjects are important—no doubt—but my interest level in some of the material is less than in others. So at no fault of its own here, this was an inconsistent read for me because of my inability to keep focused on what I consider to be very dry topics in the first place.

David finishes up the book with some exploration into practical applications into the realms of relationships, cognitive therapy, magical work, and all of it bound together with his expertise in psychotherapy. This is the shortest section of the book and I would have been pleased to see it twice the size and delving into other areas, but for a book of this depth, I think it was a good start.

While I would almost say that one should go ahead and toss all other books on Thelema into the trash, DuQuette’s are full of too much humor and great wisdom to be lightly dismissed. If it wasn’t for the need to reference Crowley’s material throughout the book as well, his too might be regulated to a back burner of irrelevancy for a modern age. So, no tossing out whole libraries here. However, if you are looking for a serious approach to Thelema, a dedicated and mature exploration of the Thelemic path, you aren’t going to find a better book anywhere.

All I can say about this book is: wow. It's like Dr. Shoemaker took a handful of magick and put it in my head, which then exploded and turned into confetti, and there was a musical number involving Freddie Mercury descending from heaven with angel wings singing 'We are the Champions'. If you're wondering, it was a good book. On my favorites shelf, immediately.

It is exactly like it says, Living Thelema. Quite possibly the first book, any new or experienced Thelemite should read in order to reassess themselves, on multiple levels/planes, in this modern world.

Excellent introduction to the philosophical system of Thelema founded by Aliester Crowley. Shoemaker brings together Crowley's system and illustrates how it parallels multiple religions(the mystics), Jungian psychology, psychotherapy, alchemy, and practical application in a variety of contexts. A must read!

Is it a good start for potential Thelemites? Yes. Did my interest in Thelema outlast this book? It did not. Still, a good fundamental resource.

David Shoemaker’s Living Thelema is a very good book, particularly for those interested in Crowley’s writings especially as they concern the Knowledge and Conversation of One’s Holy Guardian Angel. The book is clear, well written and to the point. We admit that our own education in Jungian Psychology, which the author uses to illuminate many of Crowley’s ideas, helped quite a bit, but a background in psychology is not necessary for understanding this work. The author explains all the Jungian concepts thoroughly and while we have read a great deal of Crowley’s writings previously, this book gave us even greater insight into his philosophy. Highly recommended.

Brilliant! It is not a book you simply finish and put away. You keep it handy and refer to it often - at least I have a feeling that is what I will be doing.

A true living master of Thelema, a literal academic "grandson" of Crowley. I don't trust anyone else who is alive with interpretating the Great Work like I do with Shoemaker. Psychologist, life coach and Thelemite, he truly understands the physical, psychological and metaphysical levels of the human being and how it all relates & works on the path. This book requires you to be familiar with Crowley & the path & have personal workings before you begin. Wonderful for solo practitioners and traditional path lodge members. I've been a solo practitioner for 30 years, recently read this again after many years and something just clicked in me recently after reading this a second time. Definitely a wonderful book to circle back to several times if you're feeling off current, learn to worship the glitch & grow from it.

Very good introduction text, good practical exercises, covers fundamentals very well (granted I'm a relative novice so am somewhat poorly qualified to comment). Docked a star for weak insights into mental health (people with psychosis are not merely unprepared psychics FFS! and CBT is just reheated watered down stoicism through a new-age lens and is of dubious effectiveness).

Accessible guide to the Thelemite way, upshot being it's incredibly hard work, you've got to remember loads of stuff and be prepared for several alarming costume changes. Those whose default state is slob need not apply.

A worthy guide to a living practice of Thelema and one of the most important post-Crowley texts for contemporary converts and others interested in modes of Thelemic thought and practice.

This book provides an excellent overview of Thelema beyond mere theory and does a good job of connecting its various concepts with each other.

Liked the chapter about psychology. I suspect I will never be a thelemite, that ain't my Will. (See what I did there?)

Some things resonated with me, a lot didn't. I really liked the third part of the book that talked about psychology and therapy within the context of occult practice.

A good read for the hardcore thelemite, and possibly the beginner as well. Good, basic explanations of thelemic ideas. But a bit boring. And as with many authors who are auspiciously members of the "A.A." (not Alcoholics Anon), a bit on the dogmatic side, and even a little naive.

This is a good book for people who want to learn about Thelema. Way easier to comprehend and understand than anything Crowley has written.
