The Ultimate Guide to Eating for Longevity: The Macrobiotic Way to Live a Long, Healthy, and Happy Life

Rate this book
With modern “healthy” diets constantly flip-flopping on what foods to eat and focusing on restricting calories, individuals can be left confused, defeated, and unsatisfied. This new book by  acclaimed macrobiotic health and nutritional experts Denny and Susan Waxman leaves all negativity behind and brings to light a positive outlook on building one healthy habit at a time. “Great health is not achieved by taking away and restricting—it is achieved by adding healthier foods and lifestyle practices. One healthy choice leads to another healthy choice,” says Denny Waxman.

Readers will find healthy living easier than ever by learning how to apply these principles into a broad range of modern lifestyles and having the ability to go at their own pace. The book includes new recipes from Susan Waxman and clears up misinformation about food to give you understanding of how to achieve your best physical, spiritual, and mental health.

The Ultimate Guide to Eating for Longevity is not a diet fad but based on the world’s long-standing civilizations that have changed very little over time and make it clear that it is possible to live a long healthy life.

I do agree with some of the concepts in this book. The discussion around sleep/wake times and physical activity were interesting. The banned food and drink list was just too much for me. No bananas? No herbal tea? No cold drinks? I understand why processed food is bad but herbal tea?

I thought I was interested in macrobiotic living but after reading this book I am a firm NO. Give up my induction range - hell no. Only wear cotton - also a hell no (sorry my workout clothes will not be made of cotton!).

There are some really strange concepts in this book. The full body rub with a white, organic, cotton cloth for 15 minutes a day. Really?

I recommend to those curious with macrobiotics to start else where. This may be a fun read for someone with more knowledge about macrobiotics. But this does not at all capture the spirit or philosophy of macrobiotics, but completely cuts it out- doesn’t even mention yin or yang a KEY compass in macrobiotics wisdom and philosophy. Please if you’re interested in macrobiotics, take the information here with a grain of salt. In macrobiotics there is no “Never eat these foods” macrobiotics is about a balancing wisdom of food, nature, and the universe so that we may eat ANYTHING we want! It is about freedom, there is no “macrobiotics food” all food is macrobiotic if you approach in that way. The step and information in the book about waking early, natural clothing, plants, and chewing were informative and exciting- I began to change and wake early after this one.

I started reading and found very little substantial content and a lot of fluff, I wish it went straight to the point, maybe with more stories to embellish. I skimmed the rest. It has some useful content, but it could probably be summed up in 20 pages.

While I’m interested in macrobiotics, I can’t imagine being this obsessed with my eating habits. Still, I took away some notes and appreciated the mindfulness the authors encourage by eating locally and in season; connecting with nature. A diet based on grains-beans-vegetables is hard to argue against as being healthy.

Much of the advice in this book flies in the face of what my doctor tells me. I don't know how much of the diet information I will use. At the same time, there were some common sense lifestyle recommendations that anyone could find beneficial.
