I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Craig Martelle, you have done it again. Pulled together an amazing character list with an equally amazing starting storyline that transverses over this series of books. What a opening... she loses her case in court, kills the guy, ends up on a one way ticket to a penitentiary planets jail but finds herself given a job to end all jobs! Along the way she collects a motley crew that has her back whilst she finds the evidence to determine if she needs to be the judge, jury and executioner. Loving the characters and seeing how they grow with each new case. Can’t wait to read more.
I really enjoyed the first four Books in this series. Craig Martelle has created a sub genre of his own. Like the procedurals found in Urban fantasy on Earth, these books go after the bad guys in a way that follows the order expected, but with Aliens, other more exotic environments and a endearing cast of characters. Rivak's insistence on due process makes these books a cut above the usual mercenary tale. It was fun romp through the federation.
This book is part of the series within a series set in the Kurtherian Gambit Universe. Craig Martelle and Michael Anderle did a great job creating a world and characters you can believe in and get excited about. If you enjoy this series, try the main series, it will take you on a trip...!!!
I enjoyed reading Bethany Anne's story, start to finish. But, then it ended and I didn't know what to do. Then I remembered how much I enjoyed Terry Henry Walton's stories and decided to give this series a try, hoping that Craig Martelle would continue to keep me entertained. Well, so far he has done that and more. I'm 3 books in to the series and I already feel like the characters are people I know and care about. This is a completely different type of story than the Nomad series, and I wasn't sure I'd like a story based around legal issues. Craig proved to me that he can write characters that you will get attached to, no matter what the situation they live in. I am truly impressed. Thank you, Craig Martelle, and of course, Michael Anderle.
I am loving this series. It is well written with engaging characters and interesting storylines. I have already purchased the next boxed set to continue the saga because I'm enjoying it and don't want to let the characters go. Well done!
A magistrate is a judge, jury and executioner all in one and Rivka is one of the best. She is the only human magistrate in the Federation and so is assigned a bodyguard and given nano technology augmentation. She also is a secret soft touch and seems to add extras to her crew wherever she goes.
I have always enjoyed learning about the law. I also enjoy some kick arse action. These books combine both with different personalities that somehow come together as a crew.
I love this series. The characters have completely captivated me, the plots are delightful and engaging, and I read through them quickly because I enjoyed them so much.
Everything before chapter 2 is pretty awful. It really made no sense. I think this might either be a spin-off or in the same universe of a different book or series.
The book does get drastically better after chapter 2.
Overall, the book was alright. I didn’t think it was particularly smart or logical but it was entertaining.
i read all the titles in this boxed set, purchasing each when they were originally released. Recovering from surgery i wanted to be with old and familiar friends. These highly entertaining tales meet that desire so well.
It's refreshing to read these books with a woman that is in charge but has a strong crew of people that helps balance the story come a live with some humor makes the series a awesome read. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I have
Great series with an eclectic casts thrown alone into the breach against titanic forces of evil. A demostration that in extremis the niceties of law and proceedure may not get the job done with unacceptable consequences. Loved them.
Having already read book one, I just finished the next 3. Rivkas magistrate duties have expanded. She has added more too her team. They continue to go after the bad guys, and grow in their abilities as individuals, and as a team. Lots of running, fighting, space ships, humor.
I truly enjoy Craig Martelle's stories!!! Haven't found one I didn't like. Look forward to reading his other work once I've finished the Kurtherian Gambit Universe!!! Thanks, Craig, for allowing me to escape reality into a universe where the good guys are able to serve Justice and there's no getting off on technicalities, and no innocents are caught up in the system. Wish we had the Magistrate in real life!!! What a wonderful world we would have!!!
Craig Martelle is such a great author I spend money on books with the main character is a lawyer. I try to follow the suggested reading order but noticed "Destroy The Corrupt Judge, Jury, & Executioner Book 2" should have been read before the Bad Company book "Destroyer". I liked the crossover but wanted Rivka and crew's side of the interactions/battles. Rereading the same paragraphs was boring. Having the boxed sets is great because I can flit between them without worrying about internet availability when I need the next one.
For fans of Space Opera of all ages, this Omnibus volume of the first four novels in this series is as good as it gets. Really evil villains, really staunch judgements of guilt and innocence, all the action you could ask for. Characterization is full and each one is an individual. There are no cookie cutter people here. Too much content in four novels for a detailed review, you will just have to see for yourself. Enjoy
Follow the story of Rivka, as she moves from a lawyer who loves her job and the law as written to a Magistrate. Being Judge, Jury, and Executioner-if necessary is her job, tempered only by the laws and a fierce desire for justice. A great read.
Somehow I missed reading this series when they were released, but have run through all four books in this collection really fast.
It’s a really well told story with characters that grow and develop and are just trying their best to do the right thing in the big bad world of space.
4 books in this set, very highly recommended. A good concept, well carried out. On special for a buck? Days of entertainment you won't be sorry if you pick this set up.
The books in this 4 book set had a similar formula in each, but there was enough difference to keep it interesting. I thought book 3 was the best of the set.
