About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

As with any great epic adventure you need to start with a wonderful concept and exceptional world building. Christopher Mitchell shows us once again why we can’t seem to stop thinking about this world he’s built. I recommend starting at the beginning with this series, not only will you be familiar with certain characters but also their relationships. As well the different races all have distinctive traits and talents you would not be aware of if you just started with this book.
I loved the continuation of the story. I also liked how it didn’t pick up right after the last book, time had passed and people have changed, not always for the better. The world we’ve come to know has also undergone some changes and readers get familiar with that while getting reacquainted with old friends and meeting some new ones.
Every character has their own distinct voice and they all have their parts to shine. Christopher Mitchell continues to weave his webs from more than one perspective while threading more than one story at a time. I can’t wait to see where he takes us and his character next.
I received an advanced copy of this story from the author but my views and honest opinions are my own. I received no compensation for this voluntary review.
Excellent read. This book features newer characters with ones from former books included but not as influential to the story. I think it speaks highly of Mr. Mitchell's writing that he is able to incorporate magic but it is not the driving force behind the characters. Their emotions are much more important and they don't necessarily use magic as their go-to solution. Don't get me wrong, magic is vital and a determining factor in many of the scenarios but just doesn't seem to be constantly hovering in the background waiting to make an appearance.
Lots of twists and turns, especially at the end, which makes me eagerly anticipating the next volume coming out in late June.
I really enjoy the detail going into the characters. Its superb and captures the people being described and makes you feel what they feel and think from their point of view. This is an excellent continuation , but introduces people quickly and leaves you hanging and wanting a more in depth story... I'm sure the characters will continue in the next book, but the main villain in the capital city was not introduced well, is this obscure Super powered being , that then gets handled in about 10 pages, in a fashion that really gives few details and left me disliking the lack of story the first 3/4 of the book had. I will be reading the next story in the series as I have grown attached to the characters.
Another cracker from Christopher Mitchell, Fragile Empire gives the reader exactly what it says on the tin. Set sixteen years after the climatic events of Sacrifice our infant hero Karalyn is all grown up now with her own destiny to forge in a world full of those aiming to dominate. Squads of young Creator youth Kellach Brigdomen have formed ready to fight for the only cause they know. The question is though - is it really worth it?
Initially I missed the old bunch of characters from books 1-4 but similar to reading the works of Raymond E Feist it took me no time to become engrossed in a new selection of souls. People come and go but great stories persist.
Excellent book! A combination of new and old characters. The storyline was great! Karalyn is now 18 years old and her powers are very strong. This book tells a lot about her story. It was so hard to put this book down. I can’t wait until the next book comes out.
I am one of the lucky ones that read the sixteen book series of the Magelands first, then found that these six existed. Amazing story and fantastical worlds and realms all coming together. Now I know what happened to Belinda…. Lol
I’ve been having a blast with Christopher Mitchell‘s The Magelands Epic, and that certainly continues with the series Book 4, Fragile Empire. Action, adventure, intrigue, a wonderful plot that’s perfectly written and a focus on a great character, Karalyn, who is grieving in abilities even as she’s facing new challenges. Fun and exciting stuff that I’m happy to recommend.
It took me awhile to get into this book. First I was disappointed when it started 16 yrs after the last book and I had to learn new characters. I wanted so much to see how Karalyn grew up and how Daphne and Killop' s lives evolved. But in the end it kept my attention with most of the new characters and even some surprises at the end. Ready for the next book now.
