First Light: A Landscape Photographer's Art

Rate this book
Drawing on more than two decades of experience, one of Britain’s most distinguished landscape photographers presents a collection of thought-provoking essays accompanied by a selection of stunning imagery. Containing a diverse array of picturesque landscapes ranging from North Yorkshire, the rocky canyons of the Colorado Plateau, the rugged Cornish coast, and the stunning rainforests of New Zealand’s Fjordland, this incredible visual collage reflects the philosophical intent behind each spectacular image. Revealing the technical considerations for each image - including light, weather, timing, composition, what dictated the choice of viewpoint, and selection of film and filters - this analytical yet deeply personal account is replete with practical advice for photographers of all skill levels, and a remarkable visual journey to some of the most beautiful locations in the world.

First, of all let me explain that 'first light' is a play on words as some of the astounding photos are taken at 'last light'. The phrase means first, light and then....Joe even goes into TLC for timing, lighting, composition. The format of this book is incredibly well thought out and I would beg you, after purchasing, not to flick through and look at all the pictures first. Turning over each page is a revelation giving, on the right hand page, a beautiful landscape, beautifully printed, with on the left hand side a description of the place, the circumstances and a small photo and description of a similar shot that didn't quite come up to expectations.

The thought that these landscape photos were made (Joe doesn't use the word take or taken) in exotic places was shattered for me when a cracking, glowing cliff turned out to be approx 50 miles from my house. The book is a total learning experience, photographically as well as spiritually, and ranks among the best in its genre.
