Return to the small town and Chesapeake shores of St. Caroline in this heartwarming story about finding one’s way back to love when life throws you a curveball ...
Deputy fire chief Oliver Wolfe had everything he ever wanted. A beautiful wife, two adorable (if rambunctious) sons, a job he loved, a comfortable home, and family and friends in his hometown of St. Caroline, Maryland ...
… until the day he has to stand by helplessly and watch his wife’s unconscious body get cut from the mangled wreckage of her car.
Serena Wolfe was a blissfully happy newlywed with a tall, dark, and handsome firefighter for a husband and a honeymoon baby on the way …
… until the day she wakes up from a coma to discover that she’s actually thirty years old and has two adorable (if rambunctious) boys, a house, and friends … none of which she can remember.
That’s alarming enough. But Serena might have had a secret former life … which she also can’t remember …
Julia Gabriel writes contemporary romance that is smart, sexy, and emotionally-intense (grab the tissues). She lives in New England where she is a full-time mom to a teenager, as well as a sometime writing professor and obsessive quilter (is there any other kind?). If all goes well, she’ll be a Parisienne in her next life.
It has been so long since I have fallen into the pages of a book and disappeared into so engrossing a story like I did with Julia Gabriel’s This Reminds me of Us. The author’s faultless, flowing writing strikes the perfect balance between introspection, dialogue and scene setting. I was utterly astounded at how present and visible these characters were to me. The characters were right in front of my eyes as I flicked the pages on my Kindle. Somebody give this author a whole bunch of awards please!
This is a beautifully told story of a young family in crisis, of young love put to the test. Serena Wolfe wakes up from a coma, unable to remember the last seven years of her life. She does remember her husband Oliver, but her children and all of the friends she made in the town of St. Caroline are a mystery to her.
This story was “action packed” – such a small coastal town attracts all kinds of calamities that Firefighter Oliver Wolfe must deal with, while at the same time fighting his fears that his wife has changed and grown more distant since waking up from the accident that almost claimed her life. I was rooting for this couple and their two lovable sons right down to the last chapter - Mason and Cameron are such hilarious cuties!
I can’t get enough of the Wolfe and Trevor families and the small town of St. Caroline. You will laugh, you will groan – Oliver (that intrepid, hunky fireman!) needs to accept change and loosen up a bit!!! – and you will definitely shed a tear or two as you read this book. All of your emotions and senses will be fully engaged as you walk into the drama that is Serena and Oliver’s life in this heartwarming story.
This is a standalone novel in the St. Caroline series. I give this a 10 out of 5 stars, and a standing ovation! I was downright entertained!!!
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I’m so used to reading about these guys who are fully loaded richbucks, alpha bad guys....
But the guy we have here is complete opposite. Oliver is a normal middle class good guy hero who is a firefighter.
All he had ever wanted was an average life. Nothing special, nothing extraordinary. He didn’t need everyone to think he was smart and ambitious. He didn’t need every day to be a party. He wanted a wife and kids, a modest house, a yard in which to throw a football or a baseball with his boys, a summer vacation at the beach. He wanted his dad’s job someday when his father saw fit to retire. It would be nice to maybe have a daughter, in addition to the boys.
A simple responsible good guy. Maybe boring for some people.
Then his wife Serena, the heroine, has a car accident which leaves her in coma and so she is in hospital for 4 months. The insurance do cover their hospital bill but still other remaining is paid by her father in law. So no hero here with loads of money.
I loved Oliver. He was such a good guy. Yes, he did had insecurities but these were totally understandable...to some extent. I can understand that he have doubt that his wife must have had affair before the accident.
This book was realistic, honest, and heartfelt.

- Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review - 4.5 stars. An original love story between a married couple, parents to two little boys, “This Reminds Me of Us”, by Julia Gabriel (Serif Books), is an emotional, heartfelt read, featuring a hero who feels he’s just an ordinary guy, unworthy of his wife and terrified of losing this very special lady. Brave in different ways, Oliver and Serena are amazing, beautiful characters. I admit I was not that fond of Oliver’s fears, suspicion and jealousy, indeed I found myself often annoyed with the tendency to doubt his wife’s faithfulness. But he has been through so much pain and loss recently, it’s normal to feel that way. And it was refreshing to have a hot firefighter hero, who is also solid, steady and reliable, loves being a family man and sees himself as a bit boring (but people and life aren’t always exciting, after all). I also liked how the author handled the amnesia and how Serena dealt with it. The family dynamics and the two boys, who are amazing characters (loved having Mason’s point of view!) are fabulous to read, too. Even the dead characters are believable and the grief over their deaths seamlessly interwoven throughout the story And then, meeting again the fabulous hero from “Two of Hearts”, Matt, and revisiting St. Caroline was also great - I just wish Matt gets more attention in future stories; he deserves so much more.
I did not know what I was expecting when I first started reading this book but I know by the time I ended I was having warm fuzzies. This was that kind of book for me. Not the best warm fuzzies but the kind that was glad that all the misunderstandings were figured out. Hell there were a lot. The whole context of the book was nice. I will admit it was the blurb that totally attracted me but the somewhere in the middle I just got really really mad at Oliver. I just wished he would stop accusing of wife of things he was not sure of even. She was recovering and his accusations were not helping the situation was not helping at all. At times I felt that their Older son was more mature than him.
The only problem I had was the whole grandmother's voice thing. I suddenly for a second thought I picked up a Christian book also when it came up (not to be prejudiced). That kinda overthrew me. Other than that story managed to nicely flow whilst faltering a little in the middle.
This book gave me ALL the feels. It is an extremely emotional story that deals with heartbreak and loss in an extremely honest and heartfelt way. Oliver and Serena were a happily married couple with two wonderful little boys and a baby on the way when tragedy struck. Serena wakes up from a coma four months later with no memories of the last seven years. This changes everything between them - and puts a huge amount of stress on their family and their relationship. Particularly because shortly after the accident, Olliver's mother passed away after a short battle with cancer.
Rebuilding and finding their new normal is the name of the game for this book - and truly - its not clear that they were going to make it. Despite loving each other very deeply - the stress and grief took its toll. This book is beautifully and poignantly written. I really appreciated the few scenes from Mason (their older son)'s perspective.
Books about married couples aren't always my catnip - but this one was gorgeous and wasn't at all what I expected it to be. Loved it.
I received an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review - the opinions above are all mine!
Oliver Wolfe was one hardheaded man. Once he got something in his head he would not cut loose from that idea. In this secret that he thought she was carrying he was accusing her of being untrustworthy. Making you unsure of his faithfulness, to their vows. Yet, Serena had done nothing to earn his mistrust. All except end up in a car accident. Her bad! But really, Serena had given up a sizeable trust fund to be with Ollie. So, if she did that why would she push off and say, “Let me do x, y, and z. Now Please the man is delusional. Really lack of sleep and worry will do that to a person. But you couldn’t get him to see that. All it took was three simple obscure things for this usually very levelheaded, nice, salt of the earth, hard-working father and loving husband to turn on his wife. Yet, not in an overt way no in a passive-aggressive way. Until that day he calls her out and accuses her causing and their marriage to suffer. The worst part when she denies it, he uses her memory loss suffered in the accident against her. Saying how would she know. Never once looking at her character or at the fact he loves her, or she has never once given him a reason to mistrust her. He withholds affection, stays at the fire station more, and then is jealous when the boys give her more affection than him and things don’t fall apart without him. When for four months he carried the load. Wow, he had to do his job be a father. Although, I spent most of this book disliking Ollie I totally get where grief can be a game-changer. The makeup of how your brain works to cope with the loss is touchy. Losing his mom at the same time his wife is in a traumatic accident take its toll. He really treated his wife like poo during this whole book. A spoiled child really is how he acted. Mason acted older than he did. What I did get is that Serena was safe for him to be angry with. He was secure deep down in their love that they could work things out. Yet, several times when she had made up with her parents and they said they would give her back her trust, that she would wise up and leave. Because he knew deep down he was never enough. Yet, when just going for a week vacation to her parents due to forced closure because of the weather. Causes him to doubt. He’s grouchy. He’s not so sure of himself anymore. Reality and communication with your wife seem to become more important than those he carries on in his head. The humor, reality, and ability to love during tragedy and pain is what makes this book. I requested this book from NetGalley because I read and really enjoyed a previous book in this series, and I was really hopeful for this one. I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort, angst and couples finding each other again. The blurb sounded like this one was going to have a lot of things I enjoy… And it did. But I discovered it had something else that brought the rating back down.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
Both in this book and in Hearts on Fire, Oliver is described as being set in his ways and known for being a stick in the mud type, a loyal and dedicated public servant and family man. In the previous book, these traits were played as likeable, but also a point of good-natured ribbing in a close-knit family. Here, this somehow shifts in the space of a chapter or two from admirable and likeable into stubborn, judgmental and abrasive. Oliver jumps to the worst possible conclusion with the least information he could have. He’s also resistant to Serena reforming relationships with anyone or making any major decisions after her accident.
Serena is the saving grace of the book. For a woman whose life has just been upended, she’s a solid center and narrator, navigating her life one day and one new face at a time. I loved her and her boys, and wish Ms. Gabriel hadn’t saddled her with Oliver as a husband – or had split them to give her a different ending. Oliver seemed to have an epiphany at the end of this book, but it was abrupt and unconvincing. My headcanon is this is a HFN, not a HEA.
My heart went out to both Serena and Oliver in this story. Both suffering life altering instances - her accident which left her in a coma for months (affected Oliver and Serena tremendously) and him losing his mom during this same time. My heart broke when reading that news. Oliver was making me crazy at times with his thoughts and the things he would say to Serena. He could be so sweet, sexy, and protective, but then turn around and be doubtful and hurtful. But Serena is amazing. She stood up for herself, tried new things, reunited with her family, and fell in love with her boys all over again. Her boys were so patient and loving, they were a great part of this story. And the special visitor throughout the book was heartwarming because it makes me feel like my loved ones are with me too.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.
I needed tissues before writing this, but for good tears. Any married couple knows no marriage is perfect or easy, throw in an accident with a head injury and the world shifts. Serena and Oliver have a lovely life with two boys when she has a car accident leaving her in a coma for months. Years of her memory are spotty and Oliver makes some assumptions that she can't really deny without remembering. It's sad to see this loving couple go through this odd dance of tip toeing around her memories, the truth and the guesses. At first it was like they were dating again, we got the flashbacks too. Then trying to piece together why the accident happened many questions surfaced without answers. Really enjoyed this unique tale of a married couple surviving a life changing event. I received an early copy, my review was provided unbiased and voluntarily.
I nabbed this on Netgalley because I always enjoy second-chance love stories. I expected a typical "romance" with a predictable outline resulting in a HEA. I wouldn't say that this book lived up to those expectations, as it didn't feel like a mass market romance. It was so much more. It was raw and gritty and so honest. There is an HEA but it is wrestled out of life circumstances that would defeat many. The first person narrative from both Serena and Oliver gives a complete picture of their story. They are both good people with flaws that must figure out their life when half of their couple doesn't remember their marriage.
This is part of a series but could be read without reading the prior books. Gabriel is a talented writer and I will be looking into the rest of the series.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. This is my honest review.
I received this book on Netgalley for my honest review. First of, this is the first book that I have read my this author. It’s an interesting story, the main female character, getting into a car accident, and forgetting the last 7 years of her life. Serena wakes up in the hospital, not knowing what has happened to her. She remembers her husband, Ollie, but not her two sons, or the last 7 years of their lives together. She spend the book, trying to remember what she’s forgot. I absolutely loved this story. The characters were so real, and believable. And the boys, Mason and Cam, where adorable. I love the authors writing style in this book. I discovered after I started reading this book that it was part of a series, and that could explain why some thing this book talks about seemed confusing to me. But that didn’t take much away from the story of Serena and Oliver. There were some points in the story there I really didn’t like his character that much. He showed some major trust issues, but in the end he redeemed himself. I will definitely be reading other books from this author. And have already bought the other stories in this series. I would definitely recommend this book. It is really a great read.
This is the first book in this series that I have read. It did feel a bit as if I was missing some info, but soon I was engrossed in the story. What if your wife has an accident and is in a coma for 4 months, only to awake without most of her memories of your family life together? This story tackles the difficult situation of the main couple when Serena does remember Oliver but not their little boys and everything from just after their honeymoon.
I enjoyed the writing style and the way they got their HEA!
This reminds me of us by Julia Gabriel is a highly emotional read. Emotionally it's driven by losing something that you can't find laying around your house; you have to dive deep into your own thoughts and memories and pray to recover something from before. It amazes me how our own brains can deceive us.
I would love to send kudos to Cindy Kay, the woman with the beautiful voice who read this book. Very well done! Your voice was pure and perfect for this story. I would hear the desperation, the fear, the tears, and the love as you read the book.
Saving the best for last Julia Gabriel, the author of this book, deserves the loudest cheers of congratulations. You put everything you have into your writing, and it really shows. I look forward to reading more of your writing. Thank you for this book. It changed me in a little way that can make me a better person.
Netgalley♥️ Serena remembers being at her cousins wedding in Maryland. She use to work as a leglesative assistant in New York. Serena is confused and believes she has died. She recently met a hot firefighter Oliver .Serena has the time of her life at the wedding. When Serena wakes up from a coma she is married to Oliver and has two children Mason and Cam. Oliver came to Serena's hotel when they first met but he was a gentleman. It was love from the beginning. I loved reading about Serena adjusting to her home life again after being awake.I liked that Serena was taking a quilting class. I didn't like that Oliver was jealous of Serena's memories.I liked the unknowns of Serena's life. It was frustrating but realistic what Serena and Oliver was going through.
The stories of the Wolfe Brothers in St. Caroline are riveting. This family of firefighters are dedicated to their work, but have difficult lives outside of the Fire House. This particular story of the oldest son centers around an car accident his wife had that left her in a coma for 4 months and lost memories when she regained consciousness. Questions as to why she was on that particular ride tormented her husband. Rumors surfaced ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. The story will keep you turning the pages with laughter and tears. I am looking forward to #5.
Although there is another book to his series this one finishes up the Wolfe brother's stories. Oliver and Serbia's story was a bit different. They had already met, married and started a family. But Serena is involved in an accident that leaves her in a coma. She does wake up but has forgotten large pieces of her life. Coming home proves harder than either she or Ollie realized it would be.
Love this series, but this one was hard for me to read. Indeed, I needed to skip to the end after chapter 3 to reduce my tension. But then went back and read all the way through..Really well done. Compelling characters and a beautifully heartfelt premise. I also liked how we got Mason's perspective.
I struggled with continuing to read/listen! I didn't like Ollie at all! He was whiny and selfish and treated Serena poorly! Serena let Ollie walk all over her. The description sounded so interesting. The narrator made listening difficult because of the way she whispered. Not every book is for everyone, and this one just wasn't for me.
I was looking forward to this book and it didn't disappoint. We follow Serena, Oliver, and Mason after she will up from get coma. It was great seeing a more realistic take on the ups and down of marriage and how they cope with a major life event. Loved the timeless quality of the story. Loved the addition of Mason's childlike POV and also the addition of Angie.
I'm sorry to see this series end. This book struck a lot of right notes, and Serena and the kids were great characters, but I'm not real sure what she saw in Oliver.
OMG! Poor Oliver went thru so much in a short period of time. Losing his mother, losing a baby and his wife being in a coma for months. Glad everything worked out for them.
