Forever You #1

Hate Mates

Rate this book
Have you heard the rumor about campus celebrity DJ Dalton?
No, not the one about number of the zeros in his bank account. Or the one about his father, the head football coach. Or even the one about his special talent between the sheets.
I’m talking about the one where he has a female roommate in an all-male dorm.
I can’t speak to the first three, but that fourth one is true. I know because that girl in his room is me.
Because of an error by the college, I’m placed with Mr. Campus Celebrity in the traditionally male dorm.
Is he panty-meltingly handsome with an attitude to match? Sure.
Do I accidentally fanaticize about him one (okay, maybe two) times? Fine, I’m honest enough to admit it.
None of that matters, because we’re opposites in all the ways that are important for getting along as college roommates:
He comes from a perfect life and old money. I come from a broken home and bowls of ramen.
He’s at Greene State to party. I’m here to study.
He’s a popular jock. I wouldn’t be caught dead playing sports.
To say we get off to a rocky start would be an understatement.
Ironically, that’s what causes our sizzling attraction to boil over one night. But even that comes at a price.
Because our story has a twist neither of us could see coming.
One that changes both of our lives, ‘till death do us part.

couldn't stand either of the main characters and the dumb misunderstandings. If she's such an independent tough chick, then she should've just been upfront about it and talked to him. But whatever that's just my take. I guess it wouldn't make for good angst. He's a football player but barely. 41% into the book and maybe 3 references to football. There's that one practice he was late to by 1 minute that gets the BEST PLAYING QUARTERBACK in the team benched for the rest of the season? LOL try doing that in a real football team. These schools bank on football programs and the coach/dad has this vendetta against his own son and is okay watching his football program go down the toilet. Um, that's when the athletic director and even president of the university has serious talks like if your season doesn't improve, we're firing you kind of thing. It was already ridiculous when she got boarded in a guy dorm in the first place. There's no way a university would have left her there to fend for herself in a dorm full of just guys. Absolutely not. It's called a lawsuit waiting to happen and the university would've done anything to correct that especially since it was their fault for that placement.

So much potential, such poor execution!

This book had all the makings for a really good sports/enemies to lovers/roommate romance, but just fell kinda flat at every possible opportunity. There just seemed to be a disconnect between the main characters’ words & actions. Backgrounds and relationships weren’t fleshed out very well. Not enough detail was given to make anything seem significant. DJ was supposed to be the school’s star player, but football was such an insignificant part of the storyline I don’t think I would even call this a sports romance. I found myself skimming large sections just to get to the end and even then I felt no real interest in knowing how things turned out for these two, which was good because it had what was , quite possibly, the most pointless epilogue I’ve ever read. Will not read any other books in this series.

There was just a lot of annoying things about this book. Both the plot and most of the characters were annoying. There was so much unnecessary drama that wasn´t even well written. I´m trying really hard to find something positive about this one, it was short and that´s about it.

This was an okay story. I did enjoy the plot but I wish it was executed a little better. Sometimes the story felt a little too all over the place and there were things mentioned but then never brought up again so then it just made some scenes pointless. Overall, not a bad book just not one that got me super excited.

This is the first book I've read by Mickey Miller and I loved it! DJ and Alex's story was sweet and I enjoyed every single page! The chemistry between the main characters were spot-on and I really liked the secondary characters as well, so I'm going to read the next book in the series sometime soon!

Total glutton for punishment sticking with this one to the end. The writing definitely screamed for better editing in the way of quick fixes. Towards the end on back-to-back pages there was complete repetition of one scene. Just messy.

The story had some potential, but it never was fully-developed. Some rather quirky characters brought some comical moments which I was thankful for. Otherwise, this one left a lot to be desired and a lot of dangling questions. The most glaring problem for me was the fact that a college coach would bench a starting quarterback for most of the season for being late by one minute to practice the first day. No college sports program would ever allow their season go down the tubes for this reason alone -- with fans and most importantly donors on their heels. College football is big business -- and this was total BS for an author to try and pass this off to readers.

Who knows? Maybe the author will address some of those problems in the next book in the series, but she really didn't give any indication that this would be the case. I don't hold out much hope, along with the fact that I won't be attending any more games with her either.

Game over!

Gave up around 50ish%...I just got frustrated that the biggest plot device was DJ and Alex not talking and avoidance. I just wasn't buying any attraction between them when they never spent any time together.

There aren’t many male authors who can write a book like Mickey Miller can. I think I’m in love. Haha I love his words and the way he tells a story. Most men are crass (that I’ve read). *Available on Kindle Unlimited at the time of my review**

Normally, I don't need a book to be realistic. But I at least need the driving forces behind the story to be realistic.

1. She's placed in a male dorm and the administration won't do anything about it. Ok, fine.
2. Finding BFFs for life that fast? And knows it that fast? And get matching tattoos that fast? Sure.
3. She's even given a stipend of $50 a day for her inconvenience of having shower elsewhere. Right.
4. Temptress. See notes below.
5. "It’s time I confront him … I just need to figure out how." Just fucking do it.
6. Incubus. See notes below.
7. Seriously? She's still pissed about a rumor she hasn't talked about with him yet?
8. Fucked up, guys? Just buy her a surfboard.

Notes:

Quote from book:

Besides, what would the male version of temptress be? I screw my face up at the wall, thinking. Now I’m wondering why language is so sexist as to infer that only females can tempt. What bullshit.

“How is the word temptress sexist?” “Because there isn’t a male equivalent.” “Yes, there is. Incubus.” I squint. “Seriously? Incubus means male temptress? I thought that was just a band.” “Look it up."

I Google the term incubus. Sure enough, he’s right. Incubus: n. a male demon believed to have sexual intercourse with sleeping women. 2nd definition: a cause of distress or anxiety.

Yo. Look. The male (or gender-neutral) word for "temptress" is tempter. It isn't "incubus". That's the opposite of succubus.

This story's conflict is so passive aggressive. She gets mad about some dumb ass rumor that she slept with him. Big-fucking-wah. She could've just said something to him right after she heard it. So bored.

When I first started reviewing romance, I stumbled across a few male romance writers. Because it was almost like finding a unicorn in the wild, I tried books by several of them. Nearly 1000 reviews later, Miller is one of only two I’ve stayed with faithfully, each new release being an auto 1-Click for me. Over time I’ve watched his skills grow, with each new book being better than the last.

Alex and DJ's story is the first in a brand new YA/NA series set in a mid-west college town. DJ Dalton is the promising new football star in a university that has an overabundance of incoming female freshmen. Due to a mix up because of her name, Alex Reyes is assigned to the Dalton dormitory whose population is 100% male, except for Alex. Even worse, she's assigned a dorm room with the big man on campus himself, DJ. Awkward. DJ may be attracted to the fiery Alex, but at least he's one of the few guys who makes eye contact with her eyes and not her shirt.

With the humor and heart (and a dash of heat) we’ve come to expect from this writer, Alex and DJ's story is compelling, engaging and tons of fun. I read this story in one sitting, enjoying the typical antics of the college environment while appreciating the low angst level and refreshing maturity of the characters. This one will appeal to all romance readers, but especially sports romance and young adult fans. Get in on this series from the beginning, because once you read this funny, heartfelt, phenomenal story, you'll be eager to get your hands on the rest of the books in this series.

A fine line...

Hate Mates or room mates. Same thing when it's these two. Too bad the arguing, disagreement, and disappointment don't hinder the lust brewing between them.

They say there is a fine line between love and hate...

What is this?? Spoilers to justify this

This book made no sense, I mean it had great potential, but no follow through. This wasn’t an enemy to loves theme it was an angsty hormonal trip where a lack in communication is what kept this book going....so much back and forth and lack of follow through it’s like the author thought of a bunch of ideas and then instead of making everything cohesive threw it all together randomly. What happened to Jeff? He nearly assaulted her when she opened the door??!! How was she not addressing that with DJ or any one? Or that one guy who asked if she wanted to do drugs?? Or that girl who may have been roofied? Where’s was the follow up, was she roofied? It was refreshing that the female lead made some new friends and they all got along and that was nice but what happened to the hater Jessica throughout the book? She made two entrances and then she fell off the face of the earth only to be brought back in after getting caught sleeping with his dad! And Alex’s infantile speech to his dad?? And how out of all the things that had gone on
that’s what made him have a come to Jesus moment?? Then the conspiracy theory that DJ’s dad was gonna ruin his career... this all didn’t make sense.. too many ideas thrown out with no cohesion.

Read other books by this author in the future: don’t know

This story is about Alex, who moves from San Francisco to a college in Iowa. There she gets a room assigned in an all boys dorm and has to live with DJ who is the star quarterback of the football team, who is benched by his dad. It was an okay read, often I thought, hey Alex, you study psychology and did no one told you, to try and talk things through? Because things could have had evolved at a better pace by talking. And I could not read it in one go. I started on the 12th and set it aside for a while. Then I picked it up again.

Enemies to lovers w a Mickey Miller Spin!

Alex gets assigned to the guys' dorm when her roommate cancels before her freshman year.

Not that she knows this before walking into her assigned room and meeting the hotness that is her new roommate, DJ. Who also turns out to be be the boy wonder quarterback she keeps hearing about and every girl on campus wants to date.

Oh, and the son of the football coach and they even live in the dorm named for his grandfather.

The two of them are are like flames licking the walls before everything goes up.

I loved their banter. They both have their issues that effect how they react causing a few misunderstandings.

Part of my love of this story, aside from the classic Mickey Miller heat, humor, and feels, is it brings me back to my 20s. College. Midwest. Flashbacks to one of my favorite movies at the time, Threesome. Except this story has a HEA and no MFM. Lol. Although, maybe a hot young Baldwin brother could play him.

I Floved DJ and Alex!

She's a strong, smart, independent woman despite the tragedy in her life. She isn't letting it hold her back.

DJ could be a jerk but we (him too) learn he's a bit more self aware than your typical popular mr. perfect.

The friends both of them make (the ones who are real) are fantastic. Of course, we have the Mighty Mississippi. An imaginary town and college... Can't wait for more.

Fun and relatable

Fun, quick, light, perfect for quarantine story.

Alex is a strong solid female MC and DJ is an alpha with a sensitive side. I found the characters easy to relate to and the story was sweet.

If you’re wondering if a dude can write romance, he can. Made DJ’s POV more believable.

Story is fast, but full of little gems like books, music, and sometimes some cool imagery. Like fields of corn looking like the ocean or the golden hour over the Mississippi River. I’d go into it more, but I’ll let the writer do that.

All I can say is WOW!!!! Loved this book so much. DJ and Alex were an unstoppable force. Their relationship started out as enemies but it slowly progressed into something so much more. Loved watching them discover each other and how what they wanted and needed was right in front of them the whole time. This book had me feeling all types of emotions and I loved it. When I was finished I had the biggest smile on my face. I can’t wait until book 2 in this series. I highly recommend this and everything that Mickey has written, you won’t be disappointed.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Interesting

I felt a bit like the story was only beginning when it ended. The characters have these in depth back stories that Miller goes through a lot to establish. They seem to identify themselves with their childhood traumas rather than finding out who they are without those traumas. So you'd think these big backgrounds would come into play and affect their current predicaments, except for the most part they don't. The few times they do it's resolved in the blink of an eye. It's like she had all the ingredients for an amazing cake and used them to make cookies. And I'm not sure that makes sense either. The piece of a really good new age drama are there, all the tool needed and Miller fails to see them and use them. The characters show little to no personal growth, massive family conflicts and previous traumas are either ignored or healed in the blink of an eye. Any hint of a real future between the characters is left completely unknown.

The story was okay, but it was more like a friend mentioning she's banging her roommate than a real love story.

Did a thirteen-year-old write this?

I'm not even trying to be snarky here. The writing and especially the dialogue was so cringy. I made it to 45% then skimmed to 85% and honestly I was still like how does this have so many 5-star ratings? Do me a favor and just reread the sex scene that legit seemed like it was taken out of some bad porn. They even announce their impending orgasms.

description

Okay, so let me break it down.

Alex moved from SF to the midwest or something like that. She's all stoked on being on her own at college and then she starts getting weird looks when she asks where to find her dorm. Soon we find out it's because she was assigned to an all-male dorm because the college accidentally accepted too many students and the majority ended up being female. So instead of shuffling the guys so they are all together and then making the dorms co-ed with girls being able to bunk together, they tell her tuff titty and she can stay there or sleep in a scummy motel.

description

Cause that's not a lawsuit waiting to happen.

So I'm all whatever this is fiction let's see how this plays out. But then we get more and more cringy interactions between Alex and DJ where he comes on hella strong even though she's clear she isn't interested. Well, when she's not creeping on him when he's showering.

Alex then goes on to find two besties on her first day legit out of nowhere. They meet and they are all "Oh, my gosh we are all so awesome let's be best friends forever and get matching tattoos."

At this point, I should have realized this isn't the book for me because it was so cheesetastic. But I'm sitting there thinking that maybe there are a lot nicer people out there than me who would be super suspicious of someone all up my butt the second we met. So I pushed on and then the girls go to get their besties for life tattoos and then it happens again with the tattoo artist. They are all "oH, my gosh, you don't have many friends? We should all totes be besties."

description

It was just bad. I feel like the author has never had a genuine conversation ever. Everyone seemed so shallow and cardboard. Even the stereotypical mean girl was just, blah.

In the end, I felt like my time would be better served so I gave up. Apparently there are lots of people who genuinely enjoyed this. I just wasn't one of them.

I haven't had a lot to do with this author's work, but those I have read, have been fairly anti-climatic.

Once again I found myself not liking the MCs. Football star and all round hunk DJ Dalton and tatted up, voluptuous beauty Alex Reyes are pretty much thrown together in college when Alex is wrongfully put into the boys dorm as female student numbers have skyrocketed.

Where do I start? Yes our characters are 19 and 20, so not what I would expect to be totally mature BUT seriously? It was like reading some 15 year old's diary. The situation between the roommates just goes around and around as they dodge one another and continually mis-interpret or fail to even discuss whatever it is repeatedly.
Superstar footballer who's douche-bag daddy is his coach, he barely gets to even play because his dad's being a dick. It just felt to me that the characters and even parts of the story line were so cliched that the whole thing was just some generic roommate romance that kinda even insults those I'd lump in with it. There's no Hatemates... there's barely any animosity between them, just a few misinterpreted words and situations.
And honestly, it got more and more lame as it went on. The dickhead Jeff, where'd he go? The ex girlfriend who wanted him back SOOO bad just disappeared only to suddenly pop back up doing WHAT?! OMG, I'll admit I didn't see that coming haha. We had skeezy blokes perhaps slipping drugs into girls drinks, sexist and almost abusive guys not getting called out for their behavior, stalker ex's... honestly the only person I liked was Luke. One of DJ's teammates who he accused Alex of flirting with or whatever.
When he told DJ to look for the red coloured items in the bar, that was my only memorable moment from this.

Pretty sure I'll pass on this author from now on. But never say never.

I haven't read many 'great' romance books written from a male author, but this one was pretty good. This is the first book I've read from Mickey Miller and I will be reading more.

Alex is a freshman at college who discovers on her first day on campus that she has been assigned to be a roommate in the Dalton dormitory. Because her name is Alex, it was assumed she was a male. She finds out that her roommate is the hottest upcoming football star- the big man on campus...DJ Dalton. The Dalton dorm is named after his grandfather.

At first, DJ is cocky and does things, like flirt, with Alex to get under her skin. But after spending time with her, he can not hide his true attraction to her. Alex has her own share of events where she gets under DJ's skin, like her yoga poses. This book had a good mix of humor and college drama, and some heat. I enjoyed the dialogue between the main characters, as well as the supporting characters. I read this book in one sitting. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.

HATE Mates was a really amazing read!!

The Chemistry between DJ and Alex was hot. The walking fine line between right and wrong. Should/Shouldn't kept me turning pages!

"I'm not asking you to be with me forever, I'm asking you to forgive me" (love this line!!)

I really loved this story because there are so many other characters and the banter and the bond of friendship, the seriousness of some of the topics divorce, consequences, college parties, the troubles that can often come along with the college scene, really gave the book a new level of realism, still had that Mickey Miller teasing/steamy scenes which made the book an even better read!

I highly recommend!!

I absolutely fell in love with this brand new series with fun new characters in this steamy, slow burn that I enjoyed fiercely!! Two polar opposites brought together by chance, can't fight their burning attraction, and watching them fall was a wonderful escape. A host of twists ensue, layered personalities gave us a deeper understanding, and I cannot wait for more!! Strong, sexy female lead, and a complicated, hottie of a love interest I couldn't help but to fall for. You're going to want to dive head first and not stop!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!!
