Four generations of Southern cooks have depended on "Southern Living" magazine for tried-and-true family recipes, so it's only natural that they choose this cookbook for their children. Meeting their expectations, over 120 recipes feature foods kids love to eat, each with a preparation plan and a photograph of the desired result. Short ingredient lists, numbered steps, and youthful wording and graphics keep the learning process fun. Some features include: spiral binding to lie flat for easy reading, with a wipe-clean cover; each recipe has a nutritional analysis so kids learn how to make good choices; bonus text boxes that introduce foods from around the world; and kitchen and food safety tips, basic cooking techniques, and fun party ideas.
The tantalizing pictures and easy recipes in this book have inspired my kids to want to cook! We planned a whole week of meals out of the book and enjoyed everything we made. I gave the book five stars because I think it accomplishes the goal of getting kids to learn and enjoy cooking. My only complaint is that some of the recipes rely on processed foods (processed cheese, canned soup, pudding mix box) that I normally try to avoid. I substituted fresh and homemade for those when I could, but otherwise just had the kids make the recipe as-is for the sake of encouraging them to cook -- well worth it!
my sister tells me that my niece LOVES to cook and help in the kitchen. and so for christmas, i purchased this for my little e. her very first cookbook picked especially for her with recipes i know she will enjoy... a mix of kid favourites and some interesting new flavours. instructions are very kid-friendly and the book is filled with "southern living" style food and kids eating shots. my only caution would be it may seem a bit "serious" from some versus the other cartoon/graphic options available for children.
