She was the best he’d ever had. She was the stuff of dreams for a man like him; everything he could want in a woman. Long dark hair, a sleek silhouette, and a body made for sin. The connection they made was unreal, and just as quickly as she’d come into his life she was gone.

He thought he’d lost her forever, that he’d made the worst mistake of his life letting his little bird fly away. That was until his phone rang in the middle of the night and a voice, her voice, filled with terror and heartbreak filtered over the line.

Now he’s hellbent on getting her back, riding at a grueling pace to the rescue, and he’s bringing the stuff of nightmares with him.

Received this as an ARC. This author has a bunch of personal problems going on (and will never hesitate to tell anyone all about them even if we didn't ask) but it's definitely having an effect on her work. Her last few works have gone downhill and this one was the worst. I'll still hold out hope for future books.

This was my first book by this author, so far I’m not impressed. It was kinda boring. The first few pages drew me in and then it fell flat.

The SHMC-PNW Needs to Step It Up!

This book has the "Hero" and the "HEA", but it doesn't have the ... Nail biting anticipation and grit I love about the SHMC. It has a foundation and mention of other MC chapters , but I hope to see more of the page turning suspense and drama I've loved since the SHMC began.

I'm a huge A.J. fan and have all of her MC books and I can't wait to see where this series goes. And I hope to see it, in true Sacred Heart fashion.

Great story

Dump Truck and his Little Bird this book had so much feeling in it but still kept the guys from sounding ridiculous. I really enjoyed how he goes to help her without even a question. Cant wait for the next book!

I really wanted to like this more but....
The GPS directions drove me nuts and I can't believe that more didn't come from Vegas especially she was back in a town that she was known in. I did love her new name.

Pulls you in.

I fell for the Sacred Hearts with Shattered & Scarred. Over The High Side doesnt disappoint. The story flows smoothly and keeps you invested through out. I didn't want to put the book down because I wanted to know what was next...how it all ended.
Dump Truck and Little Bird are an unlikely pair. It was a chance meeting. Chance meeting can change your life or not depending on your choices.
AJ Downey does a great job of provide backstory where it is needed, providing us with a solid ending...not cliffhanger, but enough character building that you are already waiting on the next book.

Boring in the extreme

The so called author can't write or create a story because she just copied and pasted pages of Google map directions any time any one went any where. Litetally. A couple of examples-

"I followed my GPS's insistent directions taking 1-405 to highway 518, highway 518 to highway 510. Getting off at 128th street exit, I turned left on 128 street, left on first street, then finally right on SW 117th".
Then not much later he gives his detailed route from the clubhouse,

"I hit I-5 south for around a hundred and fifty miles, ... 205 south to Oregon, from there I hit the I-84 east ... to get yo the US 26 E to get to ..." yada yada yada. Then just a few pages later gives his ride to vegas,

"I went down 78, then turned to 95 to Nevada. The ride continued for some hours until 98 turned to a hard left on I-80 E. Which eventually dovetailed to Nevada state highway NV- 305 then took a left onto US 50 east, then got onto NV..." whatever the heck it was to blah blah blah...

OMG seriously???? Mind numbingly boring and annoying! There's no story even if you manage to read through all the excessive directions and inner ramblings. I guess that's why the so called author just copied and pasted google map directions every time any one went any where. She was also trying to be too artsy with her excessively descriptive wording. Like, "the sound of his laugh felt like sable soft fur against the inside of my skull", Um.. say what now? It's fine to be artsy descriptive but at least keep real.

There was zero heat in their scenes together They were very basic and so artsy it didn't sound like a sex scene. The entire scene was then repeated practically word for word in his pov, boring! It's really not okay to make readers re-read scenes they literally just read. The vocabulary was actually limited, with the same word used after the other. But it was the excessive detail given for every single action that really had me skimming from severe boredom. Just couldn't bare to read anymore of this very boring book. Did not finish.

This story is about a man named Dump Truck. That's right, Dump Truck, or DT. I laughed hysterically when I first heard that name, but I really fell for DT.

He meets Bianca at a local Barnes & Noble while she's waiting in line he buys her book for her. She gives him a call not knowing what to expect and decides to indulge herself in a night with this big giant of a man before she has to get married to a man her father has a arranged.

Everything goes wrong in Las Vegas where she's going to be with her new husband. The only man she can think of to call for help is DT. DT leaves immediately and drives from Seattle to Las Vegas to rescue the woman he can't stop thinking about after their one night together.

The story is really beautiful about a man who so desperately wants to save the woman he can't stop thinking about. Saving her not just by keeping her safe that by helping her heal from the trauma she has endured. Bianca becomes Little Bird and finds freedom in the arms of the MC.

Little bird is super brave in the story. It's hard for her to adjust to life in the MC but DT is there for her every step of the way as well as All the brothers. It feels good seeing DT find peace and the arms of his little bird. I don't feel like there was a huge amount of character development for DT, other than going from a man who had no interest in a permanent relationship to suddenly wanting just one woman.

Plus, it seemed like all of the outside conflict was resolved within the first quarter of the book. The remaining conflict is primarily internal in Little Bird's emotional recovery. I kept expecting there to be blowback from the situation that exploded in Las Vegas.

I'm super excited about this series sentenced Seattle. I grew up north of the city and have since relocated to the East Coast. I can tell the author is a Seattle native because of her familiarity with everything and the clear description of the city. It really gave me a feeling of being back home.

I dunno…I like DT (Dump Truck), but he has a woman for a pet, or at least he treats her as one. “Good girl,” he praises her when she does something right. She looks to him for instruction, permission, approval. He gives it. He has a good heart, and she is definitely a broken bird that he is putting back together again with the help of Dahlia (a childhood friend of his MC’s president), and the MC brothers. But wow…she has no will of her own.

Bianca, the main female protagonist’s old name before entering the MC life, is a shell of a woman thanks to her terrifying husband and pimp-father who sold her in marriage to a real estate mogul to merge their empires together. DT had a one-night stand with Bianca, and it ended up meaning a lot more to both of them. Almost a year later, she calls him for help, and he goes running to rescue her.

The plot is not especially endearing, but the characters are well portrayed. Even Little Bird (Bianca’s transitional name), who is about as exciting as dishwater, makes an impression on the reader. I’m not at all sure what everyone sees in her; she is depicted as a waif who lost everything, including herself. She is skittish, but adapts well to captivity with DT.

At 75% completion I still wasn’t sure where the book was going. Bianca/Little Bird had no personality yet; rather, she drifted from place to place, generally directed by DT, and didn’t have much to say or do once she got to wherever she found herself. DT had a good heart and seemed to want to make Little Bird’s life better, admitting that he was out of his depth and did not know what to do. Perhaps that is why he treated her like a pampered pet.

Little Bird’s total reliance on DT is off-putting. It’s as if she never had a life until DT came to her rescue. But she did. The last year of it was horrible, but she had well over twenty years of living her own life before she married and lived through a year from hell. At the beginning of the book, Bianca is 26 years old; add a year for her bad marriage and she is 27 years old now. She behaves as a much younger girl.

When she tries to understand something that is outside her experience – and almost everything seems to be outside her experience – their conversation goes like this:
DT: “I like you here. You make my life better.”
Little Bird scoffs and says: “I don’t see how.”
DT: “Well, you don’t have to. It also ain’t about how you see it. It’s about how I do….”
He isn’t being ugly, just terribly patronizing. He even tells her how and where to put her things in his bedroom dresser/chest of drawers. Poor thing can’t figure that stuff out on her own. She came from wealth, but she knows how to do laundry and the dishes so it isn’t a stretch of the imagination thinking she could figure out which drawers were empty (DT tells us many of them are) and then how to fold her new clothes and place them in the empty drawers. Nope, DT has to instruct her.

The thought of DT going off on club business and leaving her alone for a few days sends her into a tizzy. She doesn’t know what to do with herself and pines away for DT. Even going out to a bookstore and for some coffee does not alleviate her need to be with DT physically. What did she do with the first 26 years of her life? She was bold and sure of herself at the beginning of the book, and while she spent an increasingly horrific year with a man she was essentially sold to, she ought to be moving forward, even just a bit.

There are some – thankfully, very few – scenes that remove a reader from the book to try and figure out what the writer is saying, for instance:
 “I shot him a little salute, picked up the safety pin and left out, stopping just inside the back door….” I don’t know what DT was doing when he "left out." Was he exiting out the left side (of what)? Did he leave something out of the conversation? I think maybe leave the word “out” out, so the sentence would read, “…picked up the safety pin and left, stopping just inside the back door….” That seems to make more sense (?).
 “Around eight hours, I’m afraid and it’s going to get dicey.” This is DT and the way this dialog is written, it sounds as if he’s afraid, yet within the context of the conversation, he isn’t. So…perhaps adding a comma as in, “Around eight hours, I’m afraid, and it’s going to get dicey...” would indicate that the “I’m afraid” is just what people say when delivering bad news. Or remove the “and” as in: “Around eight hours, I’m afraid it’s going to get dicey.” Or some such. An editor would help here.
 “....changing tact from what I was going to say….” The expression is “changing tack” and it comes from sailing where the direction of a ship is being changed by the trim of the sails. So, the sentence should read, “…changing tack from what I was going to say….”
 “…milk crates full of parts sitting on the floor….” Animate objects (humans, pets) sit and inanimate objects (books, milk crates) set. The sentence should read, “…milk crates full of parts setting on the floor….”

At 80% completion, the book was moving s-l-o-w-l-y and there were still many loose ends flapping around; I thought we were headed for a cliffhanger. Sure enough, when the book ended, the loose threads were still flickering in the background, and many questions were left unanswered. Not exactly a cliffhanger as we are left to presume that the new Bianca/Little Bird and DT would have their HEA. I think they probably will…? Unfortunately, the epilogue does not help the story - it was not an epilogue at all. Instead, it was an advert for the next book in the series written from the perspective of someone named “Marisol.” An epilogue is a literary device used to wrap up loose ends and to bring closure to the book. That didn’t happen.

I rated this book 3 stars. I liked it OK. It’s a strange little tale of a biker with a heart of gold (a common trope) who helps a wounded woman and, perhaps inadvertently, leads her into a different kind of captivity. The book is almost an instruction manual for MC life and that is an interesting glimpse into one type of fictional MC. The characters are the best part of the book, I think, and are a determining factor in reading another book by this writer. This was my first and I liked her style enough to try another.

2nd chance Boredomville MC

2nd chance romance.
I couldn’t continue with this one beyond 61 percent after they started talking about how the club members enjoy some recreational D use. The main H, named DUMP TRUCK...Not kidding you, asked the h, Bianca if she wanted to try E and she’s entertaining it.
But that’s not even the main reason I tossed it back. Frankly, I was bored! The H is also pretty much poor living in a run down bad area of town apartment. There was no word magic or pizazz coming off those pages that hooked me in. There wasn’t anything unique.
Not too many errors.

Unfinished due to every other book by the author is NOT on kindle unlimited. Sneaky teaser book to draw you in. Otherwise it would have got more stars but I'm not wasting my time reading a book when I can't continue reading the series as I can't afford to buy books outside of KU!

I really wanted to like this one, but I just didn't feel it. First, the amount of specific street directions was insane. I feel like I could get in a car (or on a motorcycle) and travel the exact routes the characters did, and that is not a good thing. Whole paragraphs dedicated to street names, highway numbers and neighborhoods were just boring, and I skipped over them after the third or fourth time. Second, the was no real point to the story. Someone is killed in the beginning, there are no repercussions from that, and it's barely mentioned again. After the initial killing in the beginning, the story has no more action, no more tension, just the two main characters living a quiet life as she is introduced to the Club life. It was kind of boring, actually. As I was reading, I kept thinking, what is the point of this? When will it get good? It never did. I will not read any more from the series.

"Over the High Side" is surprisingly flat with the tension gone after the first few chapters.
Rich girl Bianca and Sacred Hearts MC enforcer Dump Truck share a night of passion, then she disappears from his life until a year later when she calls for his help.
He removes her husband from this mortal plain and brings her back to club territory to help heal her wounds.
They have lots of repetitive sex (a Thesaurus might have come in useful), he does MC stuff, and it is just a matter of waiting for a HEA.
In the normal run of things in MC books it would work somewhat differently - he'd rescue her, the husband and his associates would hunt her down, and there would be a bloody climax. If it works don't fix it!
It's a disappointment but it is mostly readable.

Loved!

New chapter of the shmc.
Dump truck spots a pretty lady while waiting in line at a bookstore, after paying for her book and brief chat,he leaves his number in her book.
One night is all they have before her fater marries her off for business!
Late at night D.T gets a call for little bird to go save her..
After months of abuse at her husband hand, little bird calls the one man she Hope's can save her.
What comes next is a fantastic story into this chapter of shmc, meeting new characters but with the same kicka** attitude of the club.
A.j has done a fab job with this book, really cant wait for more!

They are back and better than ever

Finally! Back and better (and bigger) than ever. Sacred Hearts MC northern chapter is here! All the hotness and manliness we can get an more. Dump truck finds his Broken bird and they have a connection that can’t be broken or diminished in time. When he gets to his Bird back he builds her up to his Little Bird where she grows and flourishes. Great read. Love the dynamics of not only D.T. And Little bird, but also the makings of this sacred heart chapter. Rough and tough men willing to give it all and lay it all on the line! Great read love the independence of the characters in the group can’t wait for more and hopefully soon!

Thoroughly enjoyed it

I love the MC stories. Dump Truck is bearded, six foot seven, handsome and sexy. Bianca is from a rich family but when they meet there's instant chemistry that leads to a one night stand. She takes off in the morning and DT doesn't see her again but he's never forgotten her. Almost a year later she calls him and is desperate for his help. He rides over a thousand miles to find she's married to an abusive jerk who raped and beat her up. DT takes care of the problem and brings her back home. She's become his little wounded bird and he does everything in his power to give her back herself. He's patient and loving and is everything she needs.

Beautiful

Normally you do not think of a MC book as beautiful, but this one was.

Dump Truck, was extremely sensual, understanding, loving and supportive. Loyal, tough, and more than willing to go the extra mile for those he cares for, makes him a wonderful character. I loved how well he took care of his " little bird."

Little Bird was put in a tough situation by her father. He had arranged for her to marry a man she barely knew, all to keep himself rich and important.
When she meets Dump Truck, sparks fly. He will come to her rescue more than once in this book. I recommend this book!

As with most AJ Downey books I really, really enjoyed this one. Dump Truck/DT is a hilarious road name and such a character in this story. Got to love a huge bad boy with a hidden soft side that’s super protective. My only compliant is that this was too insta-love based for me and Bianca/Little Bird was too much of a doormat when it came to men and her life. The two characters worked well together, I just prefer heroines that have more grit and sass to them - though I know it’s not realistic to have every heroine that way. Love this sacred hearts chapter and a lot of the secondary characters (especially Fenris) are super intriguing.

So freakin Good!!!!

I didn’t realize how much I missed the SHMC, until I started reading Over the High Side! Sacred Hearts series was the first I read of AJ’s books, I fell in love with the characters and reread them many times. They sucked me right into the life she wrote about. Now we have a new series with a new chapter, and was brought into their world the same way. I am so excited to get into Mavericks book. And get to know The pacific northwest chapter more. Especially Maverick and Fenris!

Yayyyy! More Sacred Hearts!

I found A.J. through the first Sacred Hearts story with Ashton and Trigger and I have been a devoted fan ever since. When I found out that more Sacred Hearts were coming, I legit squealed like a true fan girl. I was so excited, and ultimately Little Bird and D.T. was everything I hoped for and more. I am happy that the PNW chapter hasnt strayed to far from the mother one, and now I am dying for more. But in the meantime, I will just reread all of the Sacred Hearts all over again!

I picked up the original SHMC series at a book signing and devoured them, so had to go to the spin off series and go through those, then picked up the second set of the original boys. I loved the other series she did as well (Yale is mine, fight me). I'm super glad to see the bad boys back in action. While this isn't with the original chapter, it has the same feel and grittiness to it, which I loved. This one had all the best things the bad boys have to offer, and I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one.

Great book

A damaged brother, a bartered woman, a chance at something more. A Brotherhood of bikers willing to do what it takes for a brother and his woman. A new name, a new start, a battered woman calling for help from the one man she felt she could trust. The characters are interesting, the storyline believable, add in some violence, a murder, intense sexual chemistry, and romance, even a biker who likes to read with a penchant for romance books, and you have one fantastic story you won't want to miss.

Epic

Nothing better than a great A.J.Downey book to read on a wet and cold day. And this book certainly hit the spot because its a begining of a new series that is bingeable. The men in at the MC are great im so looking forward to reading all their stories. As for little bird and D.T, well the chemistry between them both is delightful. I absolutely loved that DT put himself out there for birdy who was a one night stand. Then that fated call came from birdy and i loved his character for just jumping up and off he went....epic.

You wont be disappointed in this im sure.

A new of series set in the Pacific Northwest. This is new set of Sacred Heart MC . This is the story of Dump Truck the SAA of the SHPN and Little Bird. They have a one night stand then she leaves to marry another man. She calls DT when She needs help. This story will pull you in like the Sacred Hearts MC did. I have only one question how soon for more of this MC is released? I loved it.

I absolutely loved this book and I did not want it to end. Dump Truck is every girls dream. He's loyal, loving, caring, hot as sin and I couldn't get enough of him. When lil Bird and Dump Truck first met and hooked up it was hot as hell. I'm so happy they reunited and got their happily ever after. I can't wait to see what happens next for the members of the SHMC Pacific Northwest.

Definitely different

Though this is the SHMC the vibe is different. Started out not sure what to think about this new cha but as I read on it definitely got better. The make lead reminds me in a way of Archer which pleased me immensely. While there are similarities they are equally different. The road names are hilarious which is normal in MC's depending on how you earn them.

Not sure

I have read and loved this author’s other series’s but this one doesn’t seem to be on par. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well written and has a great storyline but the other books mixed the action and the relationships a lot better. This book seemed to be more about the couple and less on the MC and I just missed that. I will read the other books hopefully they will be more of what I know and love from this author.

Decent book

This is a decent book. I tried to read it about year ago but couldn't get into it. So I returned it through KU and then I started reading ma's other Sacred Heart MC series and then The Virtues. Then I decided to read this one and remembered trying g to read this book so I tried again and made it through. Its a little different from the other books in her series. Still a decent read and theharacters are ok.

Great start to a new chapter!!

I loved Dump Truck! AJ did another stellar job with the first book in the PNW series. It's so refreshing to read a book based in Washington state by someone who lives here and gets life in the PNW. I can't wait to learn more about the characters that were introduced in this book...it's left me wanting more and more!!!
