I used to binge Chicken Soup for the Soul back in my elementary school years. It was a collection of books that our school library had way too many of! For some reason, the teachers always recommended reading them... So, of course, I read any and all that I could find because our library was SUPER limited. I probably read every single book there three times through during my years.

It became no surprise as an adult that I would then feel like picking up a Chicken Soup for the Soul book and jump into the nostalgia. This Christmas read was a fantastic, sweet read that had many stories of hope, family and love. It was heart warming and a nice, cozy read. They are all very short stories, but totally worth it. It's the kind of book you can pick up and binge, or slowly read overtime. I highly recommend it if you want a little joy and hope in your holiday season reads.

FULL DISCLOSURE ALERT: I read two Chicken Soup for the Soul Christmas books this year, and I will be posting another review that borrows freely from this one.

Everyone who knows me can attest to what a shameless, unreserved Christmas addict I am. I have two small sets of decorations that stay up all year. I am always on the hunt for all things Christmas themed. I don't care how corny it sounds: I keep Christmas in my heart throughout the year.

Maybe it's because of this that I sometimes have trouble working up the extra wonder when the season finally arrives. At Christmastime, I want to feel like a Who down in Whoville: "Christmas day is in our grasp, as long as we have hands to clasp. Christmas day will always be, just as long as we have we," and so on. There are years when my Christmas spirit kicks in full-steam with no hesitation. And then there are years like 2020. I am but one shell-shocked member of an overall stunned into submission population. None of us have ever lived through a year quite like this. That's when I look to reading for assistance.

I am not a traditionally religious man. I have my faith, and I do indeed pray, but I am not a church-going type. I customarily avoid books like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series; what few excerpts I have sampled in the past have struck me as syrupy and contrived. Not so with "Christmas is in the Air." I needed help this year, and "Christmas is in the Air" provided it. This book is like coming home to a buffet after a full day at work. One can fill a plate repeatedly and stuff one's self in a single sitting, or one can take little bites here and there, and feel sufficiently sustained to move forward. "Christmas is in the Air" leans more (but not exclusively) to the secular side of the holiday, so readers need not feel like they are being preached to. There are just enough festive stories to help one who is searching get more into the holiday mood.

Make no mistake: "Christmas is in the Air" is not for everybody. It will not do for the committed Scrooge what the visits of four spirits did. It definitely has its audience, but once I decided to join that audience, the cement poured over me by 2020 started to crack a little, and more of the holiday spirit worked its way in.

Warning - since I have a story published in this volume, I'm definitely prejudiced in favor. The subtitle of this book is "101 Tales of Holiday Joy, Love & Gratitude." As with all Chicken Soup books, these "tales" are true stories. My own story is of the year our extended family (adult sister, mother-in-law, adult children, etc.) decided to simplify Christmas by eliminating shopping for gifts - leaving options of either "re-gifting" something from home or giving something homemade or gifting people with special memories or family photos. Titled "The Joy of Simpler Gift-Giving," that Christmas remains a wonderful memory of having truly enjoyed the best gift of all: more time to enjoy the true spirit of Christmas without all the worry of shopping.
But this is just one story among many. If you get started now, you can read one or two of these stories each day between now and Christmas (most of them can be read in 5 minutes or less) and add a wonderful glow to your holiday season. The best part of Chicken Soup stories is, in my opinion, that they are true. They cover the spectrum of human flaws and human wonders, but with the added benefit of giving you just the right tug of the heart.

I remember obsessively loving chicken soup for the soul books as a kid.. this book was on a display at the library of books that had never been checked out. I didn’t know it was a short story collection when I picked it up and I quickly learned that I hate this format. Like with a burning passion. It’s choppy, redundant, and boring.

The last story definitely redeemed it to 3 stars. If I was a quitter I would have stopped after chapter 1… it was full of back patting, “look how good I am for helping” stories. 🥲 I didn’t feel Christmas in the air..

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this. Unless you really like short story collections.
