Offers profiles of important actors, actresses, directors, and producers of the thirties, highlights influential films, and discusses the studio system
This book contained a lot of nifty essays about films, film stars, directors, studios, and genres of the 1930s. The focus is not exclusively on Hollywood, as there are sections on Renoir (for example), Nazi cinema, and documentaries in Britain. Many of these 2 or 3 page essays (illustrated with lots of stills and posters) are great and go into a lot of good detail. Others can be a little dry. This is likely due to the different authors commissioned to work on each topic. The book feels a little dated but I found it used and the price was more than right. I would read the books from other decades too if I came across them.
