Distraught over the loss of his crewmates, Caspian Robeaux no longer believes he can pretend to be part of the crew of the USCS Tempest. He has to face the fact he’s become an outsider and that’s who he’ll always be. He has no place on a Coalition starship anymore. But the mission must continue and until it’s complete, he’s stuck on board. Will he find a way to cope, or will the ghosts of his mistakes drive him mad first?

Meanwhile Commander Evelyn Diazal is dealing with her own issues. After a visit with her infirmed father goes horribly wrong, she begins to see and hear things that aren’t really there. Afraid her father somehow passed his madness on to her; Evie does everything she can to cover up her problems until it puts another crewmember in mortal danger.

Amidst all of this, the Tempest has traveled far beyond the borders of Coalition space, searching for the mysterious Andromeda threat. However what they find is far more dangerous and destructive than they ever could have imagined. Will Cas and Evie manage to pull the crew together to survive, or will their ailments cripple them before the Tempest can escape?

Wow!! Chapeau, Eric Warren. I was totally snagged from the beginning! I stayed up till the wee hours, wanting to know the outcome.
Journey’s Edge is pretty smooth sailing, at least for readers. The characters, however, find themselves in some particularly messy situations. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is the intrigue, the mystery, the characters’ interaction, the storyline, the plot..everything is fascinating and engrossing! Eric Warren has a personal knack of making everything and everybody seem real, he has demonstrated a great knowledge of sociology and psicology, with lump in throat scenes which are really profound and emotional, to the point of making me shed a few tears. There are still avenues left to explore, adventures that I want to be a part of. Looking very forward to the next installment, Planetfall.
I received an early version of this book from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.

Every book in this series just gets better and better. More adventure, getting to the heart, soul, and true nature of Caspian and Evie, more heartbreak (and I mean REAL soul-crushing, gut-wrenching, feeling guilty, howling of tears, heartbreak. Then again, that could just be me!). I really wish I could give this tale more than five stars.

Both Cas and Evie have major mental health issues in this book. Cas's issue relates to the loss of crew members, one in particular, and the blame being laid squarely at his door by himself and the crew. Evie's is with her father, who is going mad and is dying, but still has enough energy to be downright vicious to her in both words and deeds.

The reader also gets more information on Zenfor, the Sil consul (I am growing to like her very much), and a new - non-conformist - engineer joins the crew. Finally, of course, not forgetting the wonderful - no filter - Box. When he paused a specific piece of film, thinking he was really helping Cas, I almost peed myself with laughter. Absolutely brilliant! There is so much in this book, but I really don't want to spoil it for you. Excellent writing and great ideas. I love this series and can't wait for the next book.

I chose this book from a larger selection, then voluntarily read and honestly reviewed it. All opinions are my own.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. As the crew of the tempest mourns the loss of several members; the quest forthe identity of these aliens and their unknown threat continues. While taking preparations on Cypaxia- Evie embarks on personal journey to uncover family secrets that her father may be able to answer. What comes after is an dangerous and a physiological dark descent that throws the entire crew into crisis. Caspian is suffering not from guilt of the plan he helped put into motion that brought death to the Tempest; believing he is a liability for the crew, the desire to leave is overwhelming and taking a toll upon him. When they arrive to where the aliens should be... the mystery only deepens when a closer inspection has Evie seeing a structure that isn't suppose to be there. As her mental health spirals down, Caspian finds himself stepping up in ways he cannot fathom he would be doing. The crew is forced to utilize every idea and skill to out maneuver the increasing hostile alien presence, hell bent on wining their deadly game.

Highly recommended.

In this Epic Saga’s 4th episode, the crew of the Tempest are still trying to recover from the loss of the crew from the shuttle accident after getting free of the strange creature and the anomaly in book 3. They are now continuing their mission to ‘Andromeda’, and although they have lost time, none of them have forgotten their goals.
It is fascinating how quickly this book quickly picks up from the earlier work that Warren has already done with his characters, and immediately starts to develop them further, using the Main Characters to drive elements of the story and making it clever and creative, and utterly intriguing. As Cas struggles with the loss of Blohm, and Evie struggles with the impending meeting with her Father, Zenfor has suddenly realised her has taken an affinity to the crew, partly from missing his own position amongst the Sil, but partly because, although once they viewed her with fear, even contempt, they now see her, whilst not maybe as a part of the crew, but mostly certainly as their saviour, as a friend, and have started to treat her as such.
It is the simple act of physical intimacy, patting her on the shoulder or arm and thanking her for her efforts against the entity that nearly killed them all, that finally sees Zenfor turn her back on one of the Sils highest decrees, and one Zenfor said she would not break, to share their technology. And this is the spectrum of intelligent character driven writing that we have come to expect from Warren, and he delivers repeatedly, as Zenfor battles her own ethics, and finally succumbs, integrating speed algorithms into the human ship, allowing them to traverse space in days instead of months. (It conveniently allows Warren to get to his story point quicker to – I see what you did there Eric!! Great use of Technology to get your story moving!!)
As part of the continuing Character development, the Tempest has to stop at Evie’s home world for repairs, but this allows her to see her dying father. I do not want to give away any spoilers, so won’t discuss this at length, but this part of the story is not only intriguing as far as the actual story goes, it is also brilliantly written, creating powerful and emotive scenes. Warren is an exceptional writer, crafting these storylines that leave you giggling one minute, and then feeling distraught for a character the next.
Box continues to be one of the best characters in the series, you can always count on him for some hilarious comments, inappropriate comments, and commentary on mating rituals that he has been studying and what peoples interests are, which is just brilliant in a sickbay situation with a very serious and deep intense conversation happening. Box as an almost true AI, is masterful in every sense of the term as a piece of Character writing, and he alone is worth reading this series for.
Journey’s Edge sees the Tempest finally reach the area in which the ‘Andromeda’ threat was meant to be, but everything is not as it seems, and again, no spoilers. The crew are in for incredible challenges, and it is Evie who is the only one who is able to save them. But can she really do it in time, and will the others listen to her, given the fragile state of her psyche with the situation with her Father?
This is another extraordinary episode in what is one of the best series I have read in this genre. My only disappointment is that I have not read it earlier (But then again, that works to my advantage, as all the books are done, and I don’t have to wait for the next book in the series, THAT would have killed me!!)
If you are a fan of Sci-Fi, Mil Sci-Fi, Space Opera, Star Trek, any of those things, you will be wishing you had found this a long time ago and read it and re-read it, and want to know when the TV series is coming.
I am already into part 5, and it is just as good, get into this now!

Dived straight into this after finishing book 3! It had me flipping pages so hard and fast I am sure I have burns!
After the heart wrenching incident resulting in tragedy, Cas is a shattered man. He is broken like never before, filled with doubt and eaten alive with guilt. A shadow of his former self.
Evie’s ghosts of the past come for her and leave her hiding the depth of her pain and fears. Keeping her secrets may cost her dearly and those that depend on her.
All the while the threat level to the ship and her crew is higher than ever before. The plot thickens, secrets revealed, some hinted at, some curve balls are thrown and Cas may end up where he least expects when the dust settles.

Fast paced, enjoyable

Good plot and fast paced. Hard to put down. The main female characters seem to be a bit over emotional so at times it bordered on sexist. Still, I am enjoying the series.

Well, this book is kind of confusing. We’re now past the strange creature that held the Tempest in some kind of gravity well and caused the loss of three crew members. We’re headed for Cypaxia at record speed due to the vast improvements of the engines by Zenfor, the Sil. For some reason, the death of Commander Suzanna Blohm, a senior Engineer, and Captain Lecia Grippen, a starfighter pilot was hitting Caspian Robeaux very hard; especially that of Suzanna Blohm. I don’t know why this was affecting him so badly. He wasn’t close to either of these people and both had volunteered to come with him and others on the two shuttles. While that effort had ultimately failed, resulting in their deaths, Cas now feels supremely responsible for those deaths. But, he feels most responsible for Suzanna’s death even if though he didn’t know her. He had to be told by Evie that Commander Blohm was interested in a relationship with him, and again he didn’t know. He now wonders if that relationship could have grown into something meaningful, but Cas doesn’t seem like he can form long term relations with anyone. Still, the death of Commander Blohm has caused Cas a sudden loss of confidence in the things he would normally do.

And to top this all off, Captain Greene has asked Cas to fill-in for the vacant bridge engineering position; the same one normally taken by Commander Blohm. At first, Cas seems to struggle with doing this, but finally relents and does the job asked as a tribute to Suzanna. The Tempest will pickup a new Engineer once they reach Cypaxia, so Cas’ job will only be temporary anyway. Additionally, Evie will be allowed to visit her father on Cypaxia, something she is dreading very much. Her relationship with her father has been pretty terrible all her life and she doesn’t believe it will get any better with this visit. She just hopes it doesn’t get any worse. Evie also decides she wants someone to come with her. And, strangely, she chooses Cas to accompany her down to the planet. She only tells him that her father is very ill and mentally unbalanced. She doesn’t want Cas to see him so she asks him to wait outside his room while she does her visit. Only things don’t work out that way. Her father is really bad off and Evie’s visit makes it worse, much worse.

The Tempest does eventually head toward their encounter with the Andromeda armada as it’s now called. They still need to find these aliens and see what they are up to. That’s going to be a problem because once they arrive in the vicinity where the armada was last seen by Starbase Five, nothing is there. They couldn’t have come all this way for nothing, could they? At first they thing it’s some kind of gigantic hoax, but it can’t be because Starbase Five still reports the alien armada in the same location. What is happening out here in this unknown and uncharted region of space. There are three stars in close proximity to each other and they are causing some unusual gravity fluctuations, but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. If something is hiding out here, they must find it. Could this be another trap?

Ok, the story is great so far. Commander Diazal starts having some strange issues after her visit with her father. Not sure what that’s about, but it some how ties in with finding this new threat in this unknown region of space. It’s strange to read about Evie not being up to par since she’s been a very commanding woman this entire series. And then the author has to introduce something I think is absolutely unnecessary! Again, this is my review, so it’s only my personal opinion, but introducing a relationship between Commander Diazal and Lieutenant Yamashita is uncalled for. It adds nothing to the story. This kind of relationship between a superior officer and a junior subordinate can’t work for either of them. Nothing Yamashita earns, from now on, will be looked at as her own achievement. It will always appear that she is getting preferential treatment due to her relationship with Commander Diazal whither that’s true or not. And since, most science fiction book readers are males (I have nothing to substantiate that), then a gay female relationship is just tantalizing their imagination for no good reason. It’s not germane to the story and doesn’t need to be here, again, all in my humble opinion.

I still don’t think I understand what happened at this end of this book. Yes, the Tempest got away, but from who and why. I’m interested in reading further so it’s on to book 5, “Secrets Past” and it appears a sixth book is in the works entitled, “Planetfall”. Can’t wait to read both.

Another great book in this series!
I love seeing the evolution of Zenfor and how she's warming up to the "inferior" humans.

The continuing adventures of Cas, Evie and Box aboard The Tempest. They’ve gone beyond the limits of Coalition Space and are now ready to face the mysterious fleet of ships heading to Earth.

Before that though, Evie has to face some personal demons which make a whole lot of changes to her psyche and Cas has to pull himself back from the brink of guilt that is destroying him. Box has to, well Box has to continue being Box, as he is awesome!

Zenfor is worried about the reactions and consequences of her previous actions and The Tempest has a new Engineer, for whom the way The Tempest runs is going to take some getting used to.
The danger ramps up, the emotional wreckage builds up, the humour has actually receded a bit, but that fits in with the storyline and the undercurrent of fun is still there when it is suitable.
Mr Warren continue to build his characters and universe by adding new threads and twisting existing ones. Next up is Secrets Past!

The story is very well made. It's fun, entertaining and I'm enjoying it very much. I gave the book four stars out of five only because the reader can only do 4 different voices and at times it's hard th follow whose speaking. I read book 1 through 4 so far and have access to book 6. Sadly and on a personal note, I currently have no access to the other books in the series as neither Audible, Google Play Books or the Philadelphia or Delco online libraries have them. I have to find another source if I'm to complete the series.

I just learned that Amazon "Kindle" have them

This is sci-fi written the way it should be. There are fine characters with flaws that you get invested in. There are incredibly powerful aliens. Great plot twists, a fantastic universe, good pacing, and a story arc that's well thought out and very enjoyable. Recommended for sci-fi fans.

Man ,oh man

Great series, although this one had a rather abrupt ending I'm not mad at it, simply because I can pick the 5th book up immediately and continue on my merry way to finishing this phenomenal series!
