Guarding His Heart

Rate this book
A broken man, down on his luck and forced into a job he never wanted...

After a couple decades playing bodyguard for mobsters, Declan thought he'd finally managed to retire. Too bad his old boss had another idea.

At least the gig looked easy. Watching over some scientist with a rich father, secluded off in a mansion in the woods. Declan didn't expect much more than quiet, boring days.

Then came the intruders. Home invaders with secret conspiracies? Those he could handle.

But love? Never saw the damn thing coming.

A young scientist, determined to do right in a dangerous world...

Sebastian's path in life was set the second his father shipped him off to schools for the gifted.

Devoted to his research, he pretended the outside world didn't exist at all. He had everything under control, until the day a threat surfaced: a plot to kidnap Sebastian and demand millions in ransom for his release.

Enter the bodyguard. Twenty years older, with silver hair, gleaming eyes, and tattoos crawling up his muscles. A man who growled when he talked and promised to keep Sebastian safe.

Declan built walls around his heart, and shy Sebastian knows not to fall for a man like that. But as the flames between them grow hotter, will Sebastian learn to open his own heart in time for something real to finally break through?

Guarding His Heart is the first book in Bad Boy Security, a steamy new M/M series with guaranteed HEAs. Enjoy!

A Joyfully Jay review.

I really enjoyed this book! I love stories about bodyguards, and if they happen to be older than their charge, that makes it even better. That’s why I quickly snatched up Guarding His Heart andI was certainly not disappointed.

Both Declan and Sebastian are good, strong characters. I love how Declan is a gruff, rough around the edges man from a less than ideal background. I also really liked how, even though he wasn’t pleased to be there in New York, he actually threw himself into keeping Sebastian safe. Speaking of Sebastian, I thought it was kind of adorable how he was so dedicated to his work. I think it was his desire to help the world that really grabbed me…sort of a naïve optimism. The chemistry between the two men was palpable, and I feel, almost instant. My favorite parts of the book were when they allowed themselves to be vulnerable together. Declan tells Seb about his past, and Seb begins to trust/rely on Declan to keep him safe.

We have older, gruff bodyguard, Declan forced to protect Sebastian, a scientist / rich man's heir. I'm definitely feeling the 20 years age Gap as Seb is a virgin and Declan is a washed up thug. I find the pairing is intriguing.
Declan seems to be grumpy about his new assignment for a short moment, after that his interaction with Seb is all very cordial. With all the close proximity and attraction, one things lead to another. I might feel a smidgen of desire between them, but when they are together I don't feel their chemistry. Even with Seb being as inexperience as he is, I don't feel the sex scene is hot. Don't get me wrong, both Declan and Seb are nice character that do the right thing, Declan care for Seb and wanted to treat him right. However, I find the story lack of the omph factor. Even the suppose danger surrounding them doesn't feel as flesh out. They spend most of the time at Sean's mansion and not one of the extra security detail is introduced. Is like a one man show for Declan and he actually feel safe leaving Seb behind when he needs to do something in town? I find that hard to comprehend.

I enjoyed the relationship between Declan and Seb. you could feel the chemistry between the two, even if declan was a bit gruff and grumpy at the start, I loved watching their relationship begin and grow as they learnt more about each other and how the other ticks

This was a decent read. I will be honest, I was expecting it to have more of a danger aspect but honestly it was anticlimactic in most ways. Nevertheless, it was still a good romance read. I love the “whole” opposites attract idea.

Declan was not expecting when he lost everything he had in a poker game to have to repay the loss by going back into the bodyguarding game. But that is what happens. The loss of all his money - and then some - leaves him with no choice but to take the job.

Sebastian has lived the life of a hermit for the most part. He has his best friend Alexandria and his work in his lab, but that is about all. He has never even had a boyfriend, but honestly, he does not have time for one. When a threat against him arises, Declan is brought in to protect him. Unfortunately for Seb, he finds himself attracted to this very different man.

Declan cannot help but to start falling for Sebastian. He is so different than he expected him to be. He is not the spoiled rick kid he figured he’d be dealing with. He is sweet and caring. He has a high set of morals that Declan normally does not find attractive but with Seb, he just can’t help himself.

As the attraction between the two men grows, so does the realization that someone definitely wants something that Sebastian has. The question is, what is it they are after? Can Declan figure out where the danger is coming from and who is behind it and why before it is too late?

I loved the romance part of the read, but wish there had been more danger. I look forward to more by R. Cayden in the future.

Steamy M/M romance between the bodyguard and his protectee
Declan Kaiser has squandered his time and money in Las Vegas looking for his big score at the poker tables. Now it’s time to pay up. After a significant drunk evening-into morning event, he has nothing more to use as collateral. The man whom he owes gives him a bodyguarding assignment on the East Coast for the father of a young scientist who has been threatened with kidnapping. Is there more to this assignment?
Sebastian is the gifted, young scientist looking for ways to correct environmental issues while helping his father’s business make money. Their contract is to allow Seb to work on green energy as long as he gives his father’s laboratories the information to utilize for their enterprise. What Seb doesn’t know is that there is more going on here than is obvious.
Declan is 20 years older than Sebastian but they have an immediate attraction what with Declan’s “silver hair, gleaming eyes, and tattoos inching over his muscles” and Seb’s enticing “softness.” I loved the touching ending. If you like explicit M/M romance with suspense, angst, and a growly “old” man who doesn’t want to care, read this story. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and it comes highly recommended. I give it 4.5 stars. Perfect choice for the cover model too!

Easy reading is all I’m looking for at the moment, so I’ve been hitting the MM romance novels hard of late. However, my choices haven’t been great and I’ve worked my way through a series of adequate tepid tales over the past few weeks.

It came as a relief then, to open up Guarding His Heart. If you’ve read any of my reviews (and don’t worry, I know you haven’t), you’ll know I like my romance served hot. And this one doesn’t disappoint. Paying off a gambling debt to his criminal family, rough around the edges silver fox, Declan, finds himself working security for Sebastian, a young shy scientist, living under the shadow of his greedy corporate father and trying to find a way to make a difference for the world, and not just his father’s profits. When intruders threaten Sebastian, Declan finds that the stakes are higher than he had thought, as now his heart is at risk too.

So, all standard stuff! But this inter-generational romance is written well, romps along at a fair old pace, and, praise be, does not wait long before delivering on the sexual tension.

The relationship itself is a little cliché, with age and youth transposed into a dom/sub bedroom dynamic which is good fun and fortunately not translated into their day to day lives, where they becomes equals.

All in all, a good romp and a promising series start.

Recommended.

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted a copy of this book.

The protection detail to Sebastian was supposed to be an easy job, just to keep up appearences more than anything. But Declan's powerful attraction to Seb made itself known early, and then Seb's life was in danger. Can Declan keep them alive long enough for Seb to drop his walls and let Declan in?
I really rather enjoyed this!

Declan is tough, and makes no bones about how he is. Being bodyguard to a mobster for years has made him so. But Seb brings out something in him he didn't now he had and it was fun watching the big man fall, and fall HARD!

Seb is a genius and has been treated as such. Declan treats him as him, not as his IQ. He comes across a bit spoilt, but he isn't all his father's money, indeed he has plans that go against that.

The whole threat to Seb doesn't pan out how I thought it would, and it did fall a little flat to me, but that's okay. It was well written, it just wasn't blow you away plot twist type thing.

The relationship between Seb and Declan creeps up on Declan, but Seb is all in, right from the start.

This was a good introduction for me to this author.

I was intrigued when I read the blurb to this story. Who doesn't enjoy a forced proximity story between a much older tattooed body guard and a younger scientist who isolates himself to his research? Oh, and a surprise puppy! This is the first book in the Bad Boy Security series by R. Cayden.

Declan is an older former bodyguard to some pretty questionable characters. He gets sent off to New York to act as a bodyguard to a scientist. Sebastian is a young and brilliant scientist that is working on some research that he hopes will revolutionize the way we look at power. Enter their forced proximity and a dangerous threat to Sebastian’s life and we get to watch these two find each other in the most tender and delicious way.

I thought there would be a lot more gruff bodyguard and nerdy scientist angst but instead we got a fast friendship between Declan and Sebastian. I was hoping for a bit more of the opposites attract angst. I felt like this book was setting up the background story for the rest of the series. I'm curious to see where the story goes next. This one is 3.5 stars for me.

Guarding His Heart is the first book in the Bad Boy Security series. From the beginning I was intrigued. I have to tell you that at first I was not very impressed with Declan. I found him to be a bit of an ass, however he did grow on me and by the end of the story I was a fan. He is a tough older main character. One who has spent some time on the wrong side of the law and makes no bones about it. This makes him the perfect counter point for Sebastian, who is younger, over the top intelligents wise, and an innocent.

When it looks like someone is going after Sebastian, the young man's father arranges for Declan to protect him. After that, nothing is as it seems. There is so much going on and the various twists and turns keep this story hopping.

I loved this book and read it in one setting. There are several surprises I did not see coming and I always love when that happens. I can not wait to see what happends next in this series and hope we do not have to wait to long for the second book to show up.

Really enjoyable new series from R. Cayden with quite different main characters who work together so well. The plot holds throughout the book as Declan is sent to pay off his debts by guarding Sebastian, a young scientist who lives and works in a secluded mansion style home. Sebastian's work turns out to havea little bit more to it than finding greener energy. There are some tenser moments along with the hot and tender ones as their relationship builds to keep things interesting.
Of course, an attraction sparks straight away and they also have really good chemistry when they interact. They balance each other out with Declan's rougher edges working with Sebastian wealthy and proper upbringing.
There are an entertaining group of side characters, both the good and bad. Sebastian's best friend, Alexandria, and Declan's nephew, Gray, are so supportive of the two men individually and then further on in the book as a couple.
I loved reading this story and am looking forward to more from this series.

This is my first book by R. Cayden and I really enjoyed it.
Guarding His Heart is the first book in R. Cayden's Bad Boy Security series.
This story is about a scientist and his bodyguard; slow burn, age gap, Contemporary MM romance.

Declan is gambler and an ex-mobster bodyguard who's forced to repay a debt by guarding a young scientist whose living in a cabin in the woods of New York. He thought it would be an easy gig but the threats against him turn out to be more serious than expected. Sebastian is a scientist who is under the pressure and his fathers thumb, he is threatened and ends needing a bodyguar to protect him.

The relatioship between these two starts evolving fast from friendship to something more. At fisrt Dec was not sure about it but Seb is all in. I loved their interaction with each other.

It is an enjoyable read!

This was my first read from this author. I think the premise on the series is good and I look forward to reading the next installment.

Sebastian, the genius scientist wanting to do good for the world using green energy. Somewhat sheltered and naive. Rich corporate father and no mother.

Declan, the down on his luck bad boy with a heart. Sitting at a high stakes poker table that he can’t backup. He becomes the muscle to protect the kid.

The introduction to the main characters is good and following the story line is easy. Home invasions, rigged systems, seedy contacts and add in the corporate greed and you have the makings for a good story. The relationship between the MCs was a slow burn and was done well but it sort of petered out for me during the last third of the book. However, the redeeming factor was seeing each character grow into their own strengths.

This story checked lots and lots of boxes for me: 1) age difference, 2) nerd and player, 3) do gooder and man with a past, 4) protective alpha male, 5) lots of action and 6) finding the love of your life. I just loved Declan and Sebastian together. I liked the way they were with each other from the start and that we got to see the sweet nerd break down the walls the tough guy had built up to protect himself over many years of being involved in some shady stuff. Once they got romantically involved thiings were very hot. The action and twists and turns kept coming and it was fun to watch the characters figure out who they could trust and who was a snake in the grass. I also liked that they seem set at the end to work together to make the world a better place. I enjoyed the world being developed in this story and have the next book queued up to start right now.

What the blurb doesn’t tell you is how Declan and Sebastian learnt so much from each other, Seb learnt to stand tall, plot devious schemes and how evil his dad was and had a great friend in Alexandria. Declan had been around the block, tough, had done some questionable things, thought nothing could surprise him until Seb. There’s a mystery to solve, a puppy found and some humour. Declan never thought of himself as loveable until Seb, the chemistry was sizzling and hot sensual steamy scenes, I couldn’t get enough.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I definitely recommend this book and can’t wait for the next in this series.

Declan is a hardened man from a criminal background. Tasked with guarding a genius to pay off a gambling debt, he finds Seb an intriguing man.

Sebastian is holed up researching a way to create green energy. He has funding from his father, and a contract to make sure his work is used for good.

But someone is after his work, and while Declan is protecting him, they uncover Seb’s father’s deceit and the way Declan is being viewed as a washed up guard. But, no one counted on them falling for each other, for Seb, discovering what it’s like to be cared for, and for Declan, to be valued.

The genius gets himself out of his father’s clutches, and the two start over together. Pretty good, though a predictable read.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

There’s a great story line, likeable characters, action and romance. I did figure out what was going on halfway through, but it didn’t stop my enjoyment of the story.

I really like Sebastian and Declan and how they had a semi slow burn romance. I liked how Seb would listen to Declan and didn’t try to be the hero or think he knew best. It kept him safe and allowed Declan to do what he was hired for. Both men grow stronger as they learn to trust each other and together they make a sweet couple.

Guarding his heart is a book about Declan, a washed up, older, trying to go straight, crook who is in debt to a monster who offers him a body guarding job to pay his debt off.
Seb is a young scientist who is controlled by his father, he wants to do good in the World but his father has other ideas. Seb is under threat of kidnapping and Declan becomes his bodyguard.
The 2 are such an unlikely couple but they find themselves in each other. There are many tender, caring moments, there is a little romance, there are some hot, passionate moments and there is the drama of the threat and the uncovering of the evil parent!
It is an interesting book, written well and is worth a read.

I really enjoyed this story. Good bodyguard stories are always nice, but the issue of professionalism in the job industry can be annoying because of course it will slow down the romance. Declan was so far from the professional bodyguard that wasn’t really an issue.

I also appreciated how completely opposite these two were. They were opposites in almost every way including being at different stages in their lives. The characters were very well done with depth.

The mystery part threw me off a little which is always a plus In whodunit cases. There was more going on than the surface showed so seeing how it all connected was interesting.

I am a huge fan of R Cayden books so when I received this book as an ARC I was so happy... This first book in the series is about Declan an “expert” in security accepting a job to pay a debt and Sebastian a genius, and how they found each other. As always, characters are amazing and the plot is interesting with the exact measure of action, danger, romance and hot scenes. I loved how everything fell into place at the end. Wonderful first book in the series!!

I have mixed feelings on this book. It’s an interesting idea but seems like it could have had so much more potential. I couldn’t really connect with the MCs and the crisis moments were really anti-climactic. Additionally, once the relationship becomes sexual the author seems to have decoded to use sex to replace an actual storyline or character development. The story arc just flatlines. It’s too bad as there were some good points and the idea really had some potential I thought.

*I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my objective review *

This book took me quite a long time to finish. While the suspense of the subplot kept me reading, the friendship turned relationship between a gruff bodyguard who took this job because of his inability to stop gambling and a brilliant scientist who need to protect himself and his work took a bit of time to warm up to. Declan is older than Sebastian but their relationship, or friendship at first, truly develops quickly. Declan was a bit hard to get to know and like, but once I got into the book, I enjoyed these two men together.

A great start to the series.

This is an intriguing mix of age gap, forced proximity and alpha/nerd romance.
Throw in some action and suspense, with twists and turns, and it becomes a very enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages.
Declan and Sebastian are both likeable characters who quickly become friends. They share some tender moments but take their time before things start to get steamy. They overcome the obstacles thrown at them and reach a very satisfying HEA which sets the scene for future books in the series.

This was a quick, easy read. Declan was super attracted to and protective of Seb at the beginning. I would have liked more a build-up with their relationship because it happened so fast. I liked each character individually, but I couldn't picture them together. I was looking forward to some drama and excitement, but I felt like it fell a little flat. There were two instances where something exciting could have happened, but it was resolved so quickly. It was very anti-climatic. I felt like everything tied up too easily.

Different in the beat way security

Declan isn’t what someone would instantly say “oh, he’s perfect for security” since much of his work or employers have been in the gray area of the law. Seb loves his work but understands that his father isn’t looking out for his best interests. As these two men become closer and outside forces are causing chaos, the unlikely pair will soon realize they are a perfect match.

3.7 stars.. A slow build up for the start. This is a nice bodyguard and scientist story with drama and mystery plotting. I liked the story and characters especially the sexy scenes, but something in the story didn't connect for me with it.
Declan once a bodyguard but now in debt to his old boss. Forced to take on client to protect.
Sebastian was a scientific geek with a rich dad. And troubles not far for him.
