Spend a day in the life of an avalanche rescue dog! Ava is a chocolate Labrador retriever with a big job. She and her handler have trained for years to be ready to help people at their ski resort if an unexpected avalanche hits. But Ava quickly finds out there’s much more to being an avy dog than daring rescues. Told from the dog’s perspective, this riveting story also includes back matter about the breed and the role of the working dog.
Thanks to Catherine Stier for providing this book for review as part of the tour. Review of Ava:
I am Ava, Seeker in the Snow is a sweet book about a friendly and brave dog named Ava. Ava loves her human, her job, and her fellow ski patrol family. She's learned so much in her training as an avalanche rescue dog (avy dog). She's ready for her chance to prove herself, and boy does she!
This is the first chapter book I've read with my son. He's 5, and we've only done children's books so far. While he was confused about why the illustrations were in black and white, he really was into the story. I expected to read it over several days, but we ended up devouring most of it one weekend day after reading the first two chapters at bedtime. I love it when my little one asks for one more chapter.
The Dog's Day series is great for introducing keiki to different types of jobs and how these amazing working dogs help people in everyday life. They've been learning about community helpers at school so we got to add ski patrol and avalanche rescuers to our list of community helpers.
The book is great for reading aloud because it flows well, and the words are large and easy to read while trying to show the pages and pictures to the kid running circles in front of you. My voice didn't get tired from reading almost 90 pages out loud in the span of two days.
It would be a great book for emergent readers as well, as most of the words used are simple and straightforward, the concepts are easy to grasp even if the words are new, such as the job descriptions.
I asked him what he liked about the book and he says he really liked the dog and how she digs in the snow to save people. So hey, he was listening!
I Am Ava is a short and sweet beginner Chapter Book that is both entertaining and informative. I spent 2 years of college working with the Aggie Service Dogs program that raises puppies, like Ava, to go and be service animals. Almost all of our service dogs went on to be companions to those with special needs. I knew there were other “jobs” for dogs, including search and rescue, but I didn’t know – and in Texas, never really thought about – that there are dogs specifically trained to help find people in the snow. Learning about Avalanche Search and Rescue dogs through the eyes of Ava was so fun! Since this small chapter book is less than 100 pages, this will appeal to kids who both love reading, and those that are a little more hesitant. I love that this book is fiction through the eyes of a dog, because this will appeal to all the fiction loving kids, but at the same time this book is heavy on the information as well, which will appeal to the non-fiction loving kids. There is just a little something for everyone. I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars because I was intrigued enough to finish it in just one sitting! Something that doesn’t happen very often, even with the shortest of books. I would recommend this to my 2nd and 3rd graders who love animals, especially dog lovers, and anyone who loves to know more about dog workers and helpers
This entire series is amazing 3rd grade lit. We have a chocolate lab so this one was extra special to my kids.
It is so well written and equally held the attention of my 9 year old, my 4 year old, and myself. There’s some predictability to it, but in a comforting way that helps emerging readers find a rhythm to the way stories are written to be complete and interesting stories.
During the different scenes I was fully engrossed and I’m excited to finish the series.
Spend a day with Ava, working avalanche dog. Ava is a chocolate lab who can’t wait to go on a real avalanche rescue mission. She’s been training to be a rescue dog for practically her whole life. A worthwhile read for emergent readers.
