It was a random crime on a dark Beverly Hills street. Or were the victims targeted?
When an old friend from high school shows up in P.I. Burnside’s office for help, neither have any idea that this case will spiral into fraud, kidnapping and murder. But as Burnside begins looking into his friend’s beautiful celebrity daughter, he uncovers more and more people who have a dispute with her – and a reason to inflict harm.
Once again, Burnside’s investigation takes readers on a harrowing journey through the best and worst of Los Angeles. Burnside navigates his way with a little help from some pro football players and is forced to work around detectives from multiple police departments, who would prefer this case would just go away. And as he unravels the mystery, he and his wife Gail must make a critical decision on their future. The series reaches uncharted territory when Burnside gets a legendary meeting with the LAPD’s Chief of Police – an interaction the Chief would like to forget!
The 10th book in the Burnside Mystery series is smoothly written and is a joy to read. The story builds to a pulsating climax, and will leave the reader hungry for more!

Burnside is easily one of the best detectives that I have read about in recent times. Absolutely tough, fair and a good family man, all the facets of his personality are very developed. The mystery was intriguing and it had enough action and suspense to keep me hooked till the very end. Liked it.
Another great Burnside. Not often in a detective story where the main character is not only tough and cool but also a great family man. Looking forward to the next Burnside adventure.
Any of David's books before. You can be sure I'll be reading many more. At first I wasn't certain it was the type of story I usually read or would want to. I stuck with it and really got into it. It was fascinating how Burnside went from practically no information or where to start, to solving two murders too!. There wasn't a lot of action, if that's what you're looking for, as I usually am. Just Burnside coming up with suspects, who give him leads and names. It's like a puzzle. Finding one piece at a time, until he's finally getting a picture that's making sense. You really have to read it understand, what I'm trying to say. It's fascinating how the leads and pieces come together and make sense. To the point Burnside has pretty much figured out who the missing pieces are. I recommend this book. Thank you David Chill for having your books in Kindle Unlimited, so more readers can enjoy your books!
Burnside is back with his perfect wife and son, his Pathfinder, and his endless plugs for Starbucks. Putting those annoyances aside the mystery was satisfactory. It wasn't difficult to deduce how Amanda, the spoiled daughter of an old football friend of Burnside, got into trouble but there were side issues that kept the plot interesting.
I probably wouldn't keep reading this series if it took place in Des Moines, but since I grew up in LA and worked at Fox there were quite a few references that made the book interesting for me. It also helps that I like football because there are numerous paragraphs about playing and coaching (particularly the Rams and USC).
It is a serviceable set of mysteries that I can read in a couple of days, but I do wish Burnside would spend more time at Dupar's or Greenblatt's and less time describing the coffee flavors at Starbucks.
When a former teammate of Burnside contacts him to look into the attack on his daughter, who is a sports interviewer, strange things began to happen. Another one of his teammates is killed, with the daughter who is not missing. Burnside interviews people she interviewed, boyfriend, grandfather, who is later killed, and finds that not is all it is assumed to be. To complicate matters, this covers several police districts. A little slow at times, but the story turns out to be a good one.
Old classmates come into play as he is hired by one to check into the assault when his daughter was out with her boyfriend, The bodyguard is shot. was it strictly because he owed mega bucks. His plots always flow, around football, and family. The places he visits, one are familiar with is an added bonus. Great series, and one so enjoys Burnside.
I like the fact that the main character has a sense of humor. The "mystery" you can probably figure out pretty quickly, but it is still interesting to read the twists and turns. This is the first one I have read. I will definitely read books by this author. Also, if you are a football fan, you are in for a treat.
Easy to follow story. It hits home because we frequented same places in and around Culver City, Tito's,Apple Pan, Johnnie's Pastrami, The Date room, The Alibi. We both grew up in the shadow of MGM Studios. I finished the whole Burnside series and now want more.
As usual, author makes you care and respect the lead character, even as he reveals his flaws. The little additions of world insight (some men prefer to be married) mix well with exciting acrion
I had trouble putting this one down. What starts out as a P.I. looking into an assault on a troubled rich kid ends up including murder, a dirty cop, blackmail, and kidnapping.
This was a very interesting story. It gave me a lesson of football. I found that there were to many characters and too many changes in venue to keep focused on the crime.
I don't understand any author's desire for profanity, particularly f-words? I did not finish this book. You will have to decide for yourself if you want to read that kind of language. Not me.
First of mr. Chill’s books I have read. Enjoyed his football analogies & how he applied them to his tale. I look forward to the next one to see how he works “Hard Count” into his story.
Found the plot interesting, thoughtful and suspenseful.
The author has the ability to keep your attention , I found it difficult to put the book down and rushed back to it when I had to. Well written and very well organized would recommend to persons that like mystery’s.
Main character is always finding something about missing person that does not seem to make sense. Very good plot twists that will keep reader guessing. Eventually reader figures out where missing person is but creativity of why makes the book worth reading.
Enjoyable series - exciting and leaves you wanting more. I like this series because I feel entertained and surprised all at the same time. Plus, it’s part of the kindle unlimited family.
BURNSIDE HASN’T CHANGED, STILL A SMART ASS, HIS PERSONAL LIFE SEEMS TO BE GOING WELL. THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME I’VE READ BURNDIDE MYSTERY, I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH IT, JUST TOO WORDY. ;0
Chill never disappoints with mystery and mayhem mixed with football! He makes them all mesh together, kind of like the game itself! Another enjoyable few hours with David Chill!
This contain a lot of unexpected surprises and Challenges throughout the story It was well written and Was well written and as a reader I felt like I was in the story the whole way great job
3.5 is the correct rating. An interesting plot and fascinating in how it worked out. Since Burnside, the PI, is a former football coach and several pro football players figure in the investigation, there are many football reference which I found entertaining as a fan.
This is a good story. This is the tenth book in the series so obviously Chill is doing something right. I just thought the ending wrapped up a little too easily.
