Emery
I’m determined to keep love at bay, I’ve resigned myself to a life of no strings attached, but just as I settled on my new loveless path, my heart is put to the test—again. The only problem is if my complicated secret causes more problems than the one-night stand I end up having with my boss.

Jackson

For the first time in a long time, I’ve found someone I can’t stop thinking about and can’t wait to get to know better. The only problem is she’s built walls around her heart, and no amount of promises or long, lust-filled nights will convince her to let me get closer.

As Emery and Jackson try to find a balance between what they want and what they need, they find themselves up against people from their past and forced to face the truth, no matter what the cost.

Is their relationship strong enough to survive the obstacles life places in front of them?

Badly needs editing.

Also, the characters all constantly contradict themselves, behave unprofessionally at work, and childishly outside of it. There are multiple unnecessary points of views and it constantly switches between present and past tense.

Heart of Stone: Book #1: Emery & Jackson is the first book in the Heart of Stone Series by Chiquita Dennie. Ms. Dennie is a ‘new-to-me’ author, so I was looking forward to reading her story and seeing what it was like. It is a contemporary romance that had drama, funny moments, chemistry, and passion.
Emery caught her (ex) boyfriend in bed with her best friend. Double betrayal! She’s very hurt. But she also wants to put it all behind her, as she has a ‘secret’ that she needs to deal with. She’s definitely not interested in relationships- no-strings hook-ups will suit her just fine. But, will a persuasive, sexy, wealthy, alpha-type male be able to change her stone cold opinion, get her to let down her defences, and to take a chance on love again? You really need to read this book to discover all the sexy details for yourself.
Good character development, interesting characters with quirky personalities. I loved Granny! Jackson is alpha-male swooniness!! Emery is all woman, and is perfect for Jackson. Minor issue- some of the sex scenes were a little awkward for me, the descriptive words seemed a little old fashioned, or out of place. (eg: …”her juices bury(?) my c**k as we slowly rock back and forth….”). Maybe it’s just me?
Looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Jordan & Damon in Book #2.

Thank you, Ms. Dennie!

All over the place

While overall it was a good black love story that didn't involve gangs and drugs there was no depth. You didn't spend long enough with the characters to really develop an attachment to them. The story jumped from one point of view to the other so quickly you had to re-read certain passages just to confirm what was going on. In addition, the editing could use some work. From not knowing who is talking to blatant typos it was a lot of confusion. The sex scenes weren't explicit but they were racy. Kudos to the authors for writing women who reciprocate. That's not often done and it is appreciated.

Glad this book was free

All I can say is this book had no 👎🏾 substance and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. My grandson is a better story teller. What is going on with the plot🤔 to many story lines. Is the about Jackson and Emery or the family and friends🤔 I didn't particularly care for the characters personalities and/or behaviors. Let's not talk about the errors. In my Men in film voice "hated it."👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾

Struggle to Love

While I enjoyed this book, the writing made it a little hard to follow. Some of the intimate scenes were a bit all over the place and it was hard to distinguish who was talking or where they were. Other than a few errors, that could totally just be on my part, this was a really good read.

Before I jump on Emery and Jackson, the main characters of this book, let me state that I DO NOT LIKE ANGELA. She's apparently way too old to playing the games that she is. Brent seems to really love her and she keeps stomping on his heart. I'm not sure if I'll like their story, yet from what I've gotten from this story about their situation, I'm not feeling her AT ALL😒.

Now, to Emery and Jackson. I get why Emery held her illness from her family and friends. For Jackson to be mad at the fact that she didn't tell him was a bit much for me, especially since Emery continued to state she didn't want them to be a couple, just screw buddies. He's the one who got all wrapped up in them and only got his feelings hurt bc he was way too forceful with her. Emery was way too sweet and naive, like her grandfather put it, bc there is no way that I'm going to let my ex, whom not only cheated with her best friend, but got her pregnant too, continue to be in any part of my life. I don't care how many years they knew each other or were together, he totally disrespected her and she kept in communication with him, as if she would take him back, which is totally ok, yet don't say you don't want him and for him to stop calling and texting, only for you to reply and open your door for him; make up your mind and stick to it. Now that so called ex best friend of hers, Teresa, had some nerve not only showing up to Emery's home while Anthony was there, but talking to Emery as if SHE wasn't the one whom slept with her friends man and got pregnant by him; the audacity of it all🤦🏾‍♀️🤨. That whole situation was a mess and I'm glad Emery and Jackson were able to get past their issues and love each other.

I'm very eager to read about Jordan and Damon. I get her pain and being reluctant to start anything with anyone given her past, so this should be interesting.

Although I like Granny Lynn and her husband, I'm not happy that Emery's family, the Stones, were mad at her about her keeping her illness to herself. Having an incurable illness is alot and she just needed time to process it. Them being mad about it didn't help anything.

I enjoyed the start to this series and can't wait to read more. Good read.

I give the author credit for getting this book published. It was not good. It seemed to lack a professional editor. It read like an outline of a novel instead of the novel itself. My kindle edition was full of grammatical errors. Many times the verb tenses were not consistent. A paragraph would begin in the present tense and end in the past tense.

To the story - it was a romance novel. The men were very aggressive toward the female characters. They had all the power in the relationships. The lead character, Emery, basically kissed her man's feet so he would take her back. She was constantly apologizing. It was not an empowering story for woman. I'll pass on the sequels. No thanks.

I read this book only because it was free and I picked it up for a BIPOC prompt on the 2022 Popsugar challenge. If it was not for the prompt, I would have DNF'd this book. I was so not impressed.

The way these people act is so unprofessional, very rude and just plain horrible. The girls are rude and jump into bed with any man they can find,. The guys claim their girls belong to them after the first date and the first one night stand. They also act very possessive.

Each chapter was supposed to be from the POV of a different character which made this book confusing. And it is made even worse when the name at the top of one chapter is the main females character name, but the POV is actually the main MALE character. That is very sloppy editing.

Oh and this thing with men who call their girlfriends babe or baby? YUCK. They need to grow up and stop acting in a childish manner. Most of the time I think they do it because they cannot be f**ked to remember what her name is. If they are that lazy then they clearly cannot be bothered.

"Some quotes by Tony Morrison on the wall" The editing is shockingly bad. Did this novel even go through any editing process or was this done by SPELLCHECK? I may not read the works of Ms Morrison but even I know her name is spelled TONI.

And of course the main female character gets so stressed out, she goes into convulsions while have sex with the main male character - and he rushes her to the hospital. Turns out that she had been diagnosed with a chronic illness several months previously, but she had never told anyone about it. Then comes the news that she is also pregnant as well. Both of her secrets just got busted wide open and everyone is pissed that she didnt tell them.

Ugh the grammar - "Has Angela and Brent behaved themselves tonight? Absolutely shocking!! This entire story definitely had to have been "edited" (and I use that word very loosely) using Spellcheck because Spellcheck only checks for spelling errors, not grammar errors.

Perhaps the author should have invested in Grammarly?

I will not be reading any more books by this author.

Heart of Stone ~ Book 1: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Book 1 (Emery&Jackson))
By: Chiquita Dennie
5 out of 5 stars

The story Heart of Stone ~ Book 1: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Book 1 (Emery&Jackson)) by Chiquita Dennie is a book that I enjoyed reading. It drew me in from the beginning and I was hooked. I loved reading about the characters of Emery Stone and Jackson Pierce. Emery is a woman who feels the need to be in control. Her heart has been broken by a cheating ex-boyfriend. Relationships and commitment are no longer for her. Jackson is attracted to Emery from the start. She makes him feel different than others have. Now all he has to do is win over her heart and stop pushing him away. What does the future hold for Jackson and Emery? Will they find happiness or will obstacles come between them? Read this book to find out. I could feel deep emotions that both Jackson and Emery have. They are characters that I grew to care about and I found myself rooting for them to find happiness. There are steamy moments that will have you reaching for a cold glass of water. There are also several secondary characters that are wonderful to read about. I enjoyed the bonds that many of them and Emery have. This is a wonderful romance story that you don’t want to miss out on. I would recommend reading it.

Heart of Stone ~ Book 1: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Book 1 (Emery&Jackson)) is a contemporary romance story that is full of drama and passion, secrets and lies and lots of chemistry and humour that had me laughing out loud at times. The story is centered around Emery and Jackson but it also gives us a look at their friends and the women that drive them to madness. I am sure their stories will be very very interesting. The characters are definitely interesting and some are crazy and quirky, and I loved Granny and her straightforwardness with the first inappropriate thing that popped out of her mouth. As much as I enjoyed this story, the female characters frustrated me, I can understand why the men in their lives had had enough. At the same time the men came across as too full on in their alphaness (is that even a word?) and just expected the women to jump to their demands. I did like that the story was told in multiple POV’s as you have more insight into the characters and what makes them tick.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I went into HEART OF STONE blind so wasn't sure what to expect.

This is the first book in a new series. It's a contemporary romance with open door (at times extremely descriptive) sex, family, friends and a feisty Granny who doesn't care that a burger and fries are not good for high cholesterol and blood pressure (seriously - she is FIESTY). It's a story of self-discovery and trusting that not everyone is who you assume them to be.

This story is told in first person direct to the reader at times. It's enjoyable to read stories this way; it's like talking to a friend.

There is a lot of personality to this story. There are several layers and threads all moving together at the same time yet sometimes going in different directions.

I enjoyed reading this story and will definitely go into the author's catalogue to see what else has been written. I look forward to reading more of this series in the future.

Heart of Stone Book 1 – Emery & Jackson
By Chiquita Dennie
4 stars

Heart of Stone – Emery & Jackson was a really nice contemporary romance story and one that I really enjoyed. This is also the first book that I have read by this author and I really enjoyed their writing style, the book was easy to read and the characters were easy to relate to.
I really liked Emery and Jackson as characters, they were both really nice and I really felt for Emery. I could see how much Jackson liked her but she had been so hurt in the past that I could tell it was going to take a lot for her to let him in. There were some good twists to the story and some surprising turns that I didn’t see coming – I was however rooting for Emery and Jackson the whole way through the story. Alongside these two were some great supporting secondary characters who really did add something extra to the story!
I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

Heart of Stone - Book 1: Emery & Jackson was a good 4 star read.
This is a contemporary romance that pulled me right in.

Emery had a not so great past of getting hurt so she was guarded. She also has a secret that she hopes will stay hidden, but will it?
Jackson has a playboy rep and when he meets Emery he is pulled in by her, he really liked her and was great at trying to get through her walls.

Things take an interesting twist when both of their pasts make an appearance. Can they have a HEA?

We get some very steamy moments along with some unexpected twist and turns. I really liked Emery and Jackson, you could feel their chemistry coming off the pages. All of the secondary characters were great, I especially loved Grandma, she had me LOL so many times. We also got a glimpse into some other couples and I look forward to seeing more from them in the series. This was a great start to the series and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. 1-click and get started today.

Heart Of Stone (Emery & Jackson Book 1) by Chiquita Dennie
4-Stars

Heart Of Stone was a steamy romance following Emery and Jackson as their attraction develops into a romance. Emery recently ended a relationship with a man she has known since being a kid. She was devastated by finding him cheating on her and locks her heart down, afraid to love again. Jackson is determined to break through to her and treat her right. Secrets seem to tear the two apart and struggles begin. I loved both the main characters and the supporting characters. I loved that the author tied in what was happening with her best friends. It seemed to give the story more depth. I look forward to reading more in this series.

The emotion between Emery and Jackson fair leaps of the page as you read this wonderful book.

Emery Stone is keeping a secret but she believes when she walks away from her Ex it will no longer be a problem and she will never ever love again it does to much damage. Jackson Pierce is a billionaire playboy he is the typical love and leave em alpha male. When he sees Emery he changes his mind he has a new thing to chase. when their pasts come back to haunt them will they be ble to survive it and will they get a HEA

Heart of Stone Book 1: Emery & Jackson by Chiquita Dennie is the first book in the Heart of Stone series. Emery has been betrayed by her ex and her best friend. Jackson can't get Emery off his mind. She has built really high walls around herself. Can Jackson break them down?
This is a well-written story with a happily ever after ending. I enjoyed the story and a bit of humor and build up to the characters. The characters are interesting and I felt for Emery and her struggles. Jackson and the other characters were good also. I look forward to where this series goes and the stories of other characters.

Heart of Stone: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Series Book 1) by Chiquita Dennie is a four star novel. I loved how this book was a great, steamy, quick read. Emery’s story was so relatable. Lots of women have been cheated on by a man. Some women forgive, others choose to move on. Emery chose to move on and good for her. Whatever choice is made, is good, as long as that is what you want. When Emery meets Jackson, she knows there will be action between them but just doesn’t get how much action there will be and what that means for her. Little did she know her whole world would be turned upside down!

Heart of Stone: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Series Book 1) by Chiquita Dennie

Four stars

I definitely related to this story. You try to be strong so that no one sees the broken parts of you. You push yourself so hard that you don’t notice your fall. This story was so real. The author made you feel like this happened to someone. That at one point in their life they ran from love. That they thought they were better off alone. The characters learned from each other. The Grandmother was my favorite she kept it real through the whole story and never changed.

Heart of Stone: Book 1 - Emery and Jackson by Chiquita Dennie is the first book in the heart of stone series. This is a stand-alone novel as each book in the series follows a different couple.
As a whole this book has great development throughout. The story was well thought through and had a good flow to it. I’m the characters were easy to connect with too. They were relatable and it was easy to create an image of them. I thought they had a great chemistry between them that worked really well.
This was a strong start to this series and I can wait to read about the other couples coming up.

Lacking Heart!

This is a book full of sex looking for a plot. It is poorly written with the timelines out of sequence which should have been corrected by an editor. The characters are all one dimensional. There's no background on any of the characters. The plot is nonexistent. Everyone's conversation is colored by sex.

This could have been the beginning of a good series. The characters could have been interesting with more backstory for each. However, this book doesn't make me want to read the other books.

This book was not for me. I didn't enjoy the characters their story or even the romance. There were a lot of intimate scenes as well, I enjoy those sometime but in this book I didn't vibe with me. Everything seemed so forced by the guy without giving the girl any space. The girl was also not any better I felt. In short, not for me..

Editor Needed! While the story could have been really great the lack of proper editing really compromises this read. This is my first book by this author and the overall lack of editing made finishing the book a challenge. The character development was lacking and did not generate any interest in reading about any of the other characters.

I really didn’t feel the love. To me he didn’t have the right to be mad about her secret, it was casual as far she was concerned. I didn’t like the groveling, really? Not sure I will read anything else by this author.

If I could give this disorganized mess a 1/2 star I would. No structure, contradictions between characters, no character development, pacing is trash, I can keep going on and on honestly.
10/10 would not recommend to complete this book or the series.

If I cold have given it 0 stars I would

In shirt this book was terrible. Its pacing was terrible and everything happened so fast and it was confusing at times. It felt like the author was just adding stuff as they went along forgetting what they wrote previously.
1 example is when did Damon become friends with Brent and Jackson? Jordan talked to Brent about him but it never occurred to him to say that's his friend? There is one chapter that says its supposed to be Emory but its actually in Jackson's perspective. And they kept saying in the end Emory was hiding her pregnancy from Jackson when 1 she just found out because she had a lupus flare and 2 she was trying to call him and talk to him and he was ignoring her phone call. She even went to go see him twice and he wasn't listening to her. Now miraculously she was intending to hide a pregnancy. Then my question was the whole family and friends were there and found out about her having lupus and being pregnant but you were only there for the lupus reveal? If she really was intending to hide it why would she tell Brent someone she knew would talk to Jackson because they are friends! The book makes no sense 0 stars. I wnt be reading the sequels or recommending this book!

Thoughts I typed out in my Notes app while reading:

How is Emery allowing all this? The ex and ex best friend just waltzing into her house like that!? Unrealistic behaviors by the men, the men expressing ownership of these women is weird (like, why punch the guy when you don’t even know the circumstances? Why take off your belt to slap your woman? 👀) and the calling your man ‘daddy’ vibe is too icky for me 🥴

This book desperately needed an editor! Chapter 12 was titled Emery but was Jackson’s pov. Erm!?? 🫠
The narration is very ‘high school’. No real depth to the storyline and it reads like a play by play report rather than a novel.

This book was all over the place! (I thought this several times throughout reading). Despite the title, this seems to have been everybody’s story not just Emery and Jackson.

Would I recommend?? Don’t waste your time! 🚫

Heart of Stone - Book 1: Emery & Jackson by Chiquita Dennie

4-stars

Chiquita Dennie is a new to me author and I was pleasantly surprised by the first book of her series. The storyline was intricate with a few main stories playing out all while following a core group of friends. I found that at times I had a harder time trying to follow along as the storyline jumps from couple to couple, however, the stories intrigued me which kept me connected and reading.

I look forward to reading more from this series in the future!

Emery & Jackson is the first book in the Heart of Stone Series. This was a great contemporary romance read that I enjoyed immensely. Emery isn't interested in a relationship, especially after catching her ex-boyfriend in bed with her best friend!! No strings attached hook ups are all she has time for now. Enter Jackson Pierce, a one night stand kinda guy...until he meets Emery, then his plans change. This is a creative well written story and the characters are complex and engaging. I definitely recommend you read it for yourself.
