Echoes of War #7

Finish the Fight

Rate this book

There’s no rest for the weary.

The sun has set on General David Cohen’s galactic military service after twenty-two years in the Coalition Defense Force. Stripped of command of the CSV Lion of Judah by the new administration after his candid assessment of their tactics, David faces ending his illustrious career not as a war hero but a desk jockey.

But the League of Sol isn’t about to head off into the sunset to lick its wounds.

Though its shipyards lie in ruins and its leaders talk peace, the League still has their reserve home defense fleet – and a seething determination to use it to claim victory over the Terran Coalition once and for all.

As well as an old adversary ready to take General Cohen down.

Word reaches CIS that the enemy is secretly amassing forces. In a last-ditch effort, David joins old allies to commandeer a ship for a daring recon mission. With arrest warrants hanging over them but their suspicions confirmed, they risk their freedom to confront the Terran Coalition’s leadership with the newly discovered intelligence.

When the dust settles, David is tasked with a desperate mission: defend Canaan at all costs.

And like his father before him, this mission may prove to be his last in this epic series conclusion.

Courage, loyalty, fidelity, integrity, faith. These are words that strike a cord within me. Daniel Gibbs writes characters who exhibit these traits, characters I can admire and enjoy reading about. True heroes. Warriors who fight to protect those they love and their way of life, should receive honor and thanks. But that is not what David Cohen receives after the heroic events in Run the Gauntlet. Instead he loses his command and is dishonored. But when a few friends seek him out and ask him to lead them on a stealth mission, the soldier in him can’t say no.

When the truth of the League of Sol’s duplicity is revealed, David and the crew of the Lion Of Judah are, once again, asked to risk all to save the coalition. As too few face an enemy force far, far greater, only faith, courage … and unexpected help … will them through.

I enjoyed all the books in this series and am sad to see it end. The only negative I can point out is missing or mistaken words in several places in the text of the last book. Certainly not enough to ruin my reading, but something I felt I needed to point out anyway.

Finish the Fight is a satisfying ending to a excellent story. I highly recommend this entire series.

Echoes of War

Great read, only time I read all the books one right after another. Most of the time I will read two or three books and then move on to something else. These stories held my interest and attention all the way through. I would highly recommend anyone to read. It seems to have some of the same narrative as what is happening around us.

Second

Just finished reading the second series of this story line and have already bought the first book in the next series that follows. This story line that the author is writing about is outstanding with lots of action and great characters and as long as there are more books in this story line I will be buying them

Daniel Gibbs
Due to my brutally busy voluntary job I seldom now write reviews. But an exception has to be made here. Daniel Gibbs has spend countless hours writing the series of books about David Cohen.
The very very least I as a reader can do is give him a review. It is no more than he Daniel deserves after having given ME so many hours of pleasure in return.
The way Daniel has approached these series of books is unusual and refreshing. Now.... before you ask... no... I am not a religious person. There is far too much of a scientist in me. To be frank... this is the first series of SF books I have read where the author has woven in his own, and his major characters religion, into the story. And to give credit to Daniel... he has done it well!
Not only that... Daniel has given other religions their place too..... I am particularly delighted to see that he gives our Muslim, Sikh , Christian and other religious friends their rightful places in his stories. To Daniel I just say: WELL DONE. Sallaam Aleikum to you David.
As your time will be equally precious... let me just say this: At 78 years old I have read a book or two. The much misused cliche is appropriate here: I just can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. At times I would like to tell Daniel not to make the books so good..... they are getting at times hard to put down.
Daniel Gibbs has mastered the crucial task for any writer and that is simply this: make the reader identify with your character. Whether that is Anger, hate or love or whatever else does not matter. Try to transfer the reader into the story's character. If you do that, and do it well, you are walking the road to writers success.

So... there you have it. No... you will not find a detailed character analysis in this review. YOU, the reader, have to make up your own mind and you do not need me for that. But I just will say this: I wonder if deep inside all of us human beings there isn't an unanswered question. Is there something like a GOD ? (By whatever name ?) 99% of the time we will probably give that question a resounding NO for an answer. But there does remain the single one percent of doubt.
Daniel, in his series of books about David Cohen, is touching on this question in his own special way. Daniel... if you are reading this review, know that I admire the way that you have taken this bull by the horns and try to answer it from your own perspective. For that Daniel Gibbs, you have my enduring gratitude.

Again, Daniel Gibbs writes a space opera full of military battle action and political goings-on that compares well to the best of David Weber, Jerry Pournelle and Glynn Stewart and yet buffs to brilliance the human and spiritual struggles of the individual characters. What particularly struck me was the replay of his short story "Stand Firm". This is that story all over again, with David Cohen in the place of his father, facing the same battle with similar lack of preparation and similar odds. Daniel Gibbs gives us more detail and nuance into David Cohen's start-and-stop forward motion towards living his faith - that unfortunately sounds too much like me - but shows us that God can and does work in mysterious ways. I really enjoyed the characters and the action, but the way Daniel Gibbs writes faith into even the worst situations really makes this something worth keeping my bookshelf.

I received a reading copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Each Military Science Fiction entry from author Daniel Gibbs is a thrilling experience in many senses. FINISH THE FIGHT is Book Seven, the conclusion to his ECHOES OF WAR Series. With every page, I marveled at how very apropos was this futuristic setting to today's sociopolitical morass. In the name of peace, politicians with little to none "real-world" experience confuse ideology for reality and pay subservience to the ideal of Peace, without the essential foundation. I admired Mr. Gibbs' gift for character delineation and evolution, and his characters' commitment to moral integrity [that is, in regard to the "good" characters]. Reading these novels is a treat and simultaneously, simply inspiring. I want to be a better person from reading of Daniel Cohen and his companions and friends.

David is back in his ship, and the fleet is tasked with the impossible.

Spencer is back to being President and Fluentes is VP. The jesabell is out to pasture before she could do any more harm. Then David is called back to man his ship and the fleet is tasked with the impossible. They are asked to hold the two thousand League ships while the Exodus fleet runs away with a part of the coalitions people. Thus he is to save a portion of mankind to restart once the League wins. To do this he is given 125 ships to fight the Leagues 2000. Impossible odds so humanity prays for a miracle.

Bravo Zulu

This is a review for all seven excellent books. I liked the focus on the very personal nature of both faith and service in the military. There was a bit of current event commentary that frankly everyone ought to pay a bit of attention to. Very well done and worth every minute and every nickle. Semper Fidelis Mr Gibbs.

Outstanding!

As with all of Gibbs’ books, this is an enthralling tale. The main characters have become your friends through the course of the series. You can’t help but pull for them through their personal trials and the action in the book. A truly amazing read. I hate to see the series end.

Good to the last page

I read the entire series, so that's a good sign. The level of military action is fairly consistent. The moaning and groaning about the morality of being an effective soldier gets rather tiring, but easy to turn the page. Horrific over use of the word "smirk."

Too much proselytizing, praying not enough action. Too much centricity on the main characters faith, if I wanted to learn about Judaism I would pick up an actual book that was non-fiction.

maybe the best book of this series?

The war concludes with a whimper from all sides.

The Lord is said to work in mysterious ways and He definitely does in this book.
